Guide to Gallery Wall Layouts: How to Make a Gallery Wall

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The safest, cleanest way to make a gallery wall is to plan it at full size before drilling. Choose a layout that suits the collection, establish the group’s boundary and visual center, test the pieces on the floor, then use labeled paper templates to transfer every hanger position to the wall.

The best gallery wall layout depends on the collection and the wall

Choose a grid for a calm, architectural display; a symmetrical arrangement above centered furniture; an organic salon-style arrangement for mixed frames and artwork; an anchored asymmetrical arrangement when one large piece should lead; or a picture ledge when you want to change the display without making new holes.

Whichever layout you choose, the reliable installation method is the same: measure the frames and wall, test the arrangement on the floor, make full-size paper templates, mark each hanger position, install hardware suited to the wall and load, then hang and level the frames. This turns a potentially expensive guessing exercise into a reversible planning job.

Five gallery wall layouts to consider

1. Grid layout

A grid uses repeated rows and columns, aligned outside edges, and consistent gaps. It works best when the frames are identical or have a common proportion. Family photographs, coordinated prints, minimalist artwork, dining-room displays, and offices all suit this approach.

The grid does not depend on having a particular number of frames. It depends on discipline: the top, bottom, and side edges should line up, and the spaces between neighboring frames should be consistent. If the frames vary slightly in size, standardize the arrangement around their outer edges or use mats and frames that create a shared visual proportion.

  • MAXIMUM FRAME SIZE 24 X 36 INCHES: One package includes 14 pairs (28 strips total) of the Command Large Picture Hanging Strips; four wall adhesive strip pairs hold 16 pounds; maximum frame of 24 x 36 inches
  • WORKS ON A VARIETY OF SMOOTH SURFACES: Wall hanging strips work on a variety of smooth surfaces, including painted walls, finished wood, painted concrete cinder blocks, laminate, glass, metal and tiles
  • SURFACE PREP: Clean the desired surface with rubbing alcohol to remove grime and dust to allow the no damage wall hangers to bond to the surface; the indoor temperature must be between 5 degrees Fahrenheit and 15 degrees Fahrenheit
  • USAGE TIPS: Wait seven days after painting before using the Command Picture Hangers to allow paint to cure; do not hang over beds or on wallpaper; do not use the wall hanging strips to hang valuable items

2. Symmetrical arrangement

A symmetrical gallery wall balances similar visual weight on each side of a central axis. The frames do not have to be identical, but the left and right sides should feel equivalent in overall mass, color, and scale.

This is particularly effective above a sofa, bed, console table, fireplace, or another centered architectural feature. The furniture supplies a strong horizontal reference, so a balanced arrangement usually looks more intentional than a random collection placed above it.

3. Organic or salon-style arrangement

An organic arrangement mixes portrait and landscape frames, different sizes, and sometimes objects such as mirrors or clocks. The Smithsonian describes salon-style hanging as a dense, top-to-bottom and side-by-side display associated with nineteenth-century collector galleries. A modern home version can be less dense and more relaxed, but it still needs structure.

Give the composition a visual anchor, repeat one or two elements, and establish a controlled outside boundary. Repeated frame color, mat color, artwork palette, subject matter, or spacing can make an otherwise varied collection feel intentional. Organic does not mean placing pieces wherever there is an empty spot: large unexplained gaps can make the display appear disconnected.

4. Anchored asymmetrical arrangement

Start with one large central or slightly offset piece, then build outward with medium and small frames. This layout is useful when you have one dominant artwork, mismatched frames, or a collection that does not divide naturally into equal rows.

IKEA’s gallery-wall guidance recommends beginning with the largest frame and working outward from large to medium to small pieces. The large frame establishes the composition; the smaller pieces balance its visual weight rather than competing with it.

  • EASY CLEAN REMOVAL: Lightly hold the top of the removable adhesive strips and slowly pull straight down towards the floor to remove and prevent damage of walls and surfaces

5. Picture ledge or hybrid display

A picture ledge creates a structural line while frames lean against the wall. You can layer different sizes, add small objects, and change the display without relocating every wall fastener. It is a practical choice for renters or anyone who expects to rotate artwork.

A ledge still needs to be attached for its actual load and wall type. Do not assume that a ledge is safer than individual frames simply because it reduces the number of holes. Include the ledge, frames, and decorative objects when estimating the total load.

How to choose the right arrangement

Choose this layout When it works best Planning priority
Grid Similar frames, repeated prints, or a room that benefits from order Aligned edges and uniform gaps
Symmetrical Above centered furniture or a strong architectural feature Equal visual weight on both sides
Organic Mixed sizes, orientations, frame styles, and objects A visual anchor, repeated elements, and a controlled boundary
Anchored asymmetrical One dominant artwork or a mismatched collection Build outward from the largest piece
Picture ledge Rentals, frequent rearrangement, or a flexible display Correct ledge installation and total-load calculation

Before choosing, identify at least one repeated element. Similar frame materials, mat colors, artwork colors, subject matter, or deliberate spacing can tie a mixed collection together. Two repeated elements usually create even more cohesion.

Gallery wall spacing and proportions

Spacing between frames

Use approximately 2 to 4 inches between neighboring frames as a starting range. Smaller frames generally look better with smaller gaps; large pieces can tolerate more breathing room. In a grid or structured arrangement, keep the gaps consistent. In an organic arrangement, vary them slightly if that supports the composition, but avoid isolated gaps that look accidental.

Spacing is not a rule to follow independently of scale. Four inches may look generous between large canvases but excessive between small photographs. Stand back and judge the relationship between the frame sizes, the gaps, and the overall boundary.

Spacing above furniture

When hanging artwork above a sofa or bed, leave about 8 to 10 inches between the bottom of the gallery-wall group and the furniture. Home Depot also recommends that a group above a sofa span approximately two-thirds of the sofa’s width.

  • EASY CLEAN REMOVAL: Lightly hold the top of the removable adhesive strips and slowly pull straight down towards the floor to remove and prevent damage of walls and surfaces

Measure the complete group, not just the largest frame. A narrow gallery wall can look stranded above a wide sofa, while a group that extends much farther than the furniture can overwhelm the room. The two-thirds proportion is a useful starting point, not a requirement for every wall or furniture style.

Height and visual center

For a single artwork, Home Depot identifies 57 inches as a common height for the midpoint. Apply the same idea to the visual center of a gallery wall or to its central piece; do not force every individual frame’s center to exactly 57 inches.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Above furniture, the clearance between the furniture and art takes priority. The group may sit lower than a freestanding piece while still maintaining a comfortable visual center. In hallways and circulation areas, aim for the middle of the composition to be near eye level, then adjust for unusually tall walls, low ceilings, furniture height, and the room’s normal viewing positions.

How to plan a gallery wall before drilling

  1. Measure the available wall. Record the width and height of the usable area, then measure the sofa, bed, console, mantel, or other feature below it.
  2. Measure every frame. Use each frame’s outside dimensions, not merely the image opening. Include mats, projecting moulding, and any unusual hardware.
  3. Choose a visual anchor. This may be the largest frame, a central photograph, a mirror, or the centerline of the furniture.
  4. Test several arrangements on the floor. Move the pieces more easily there than on the wall. Try more than one layout, photograph the preferred version, and note the intended position of each frame. IKEA specifically recommends floor planning before installation.
  5. Define the outside boundary. Decide the intended left, right, top, and bottom edges of the group. Keep the boundary proportionate to the wall and furniture instead of allowing the display to become accidentally narrow or oversized.
  6. Trace each frame. Use kraft paper, butcher paper, or other inexpensive paper. Cut out one template per frame and label it with the frame or artwork name.
  7. Transfer the hanger position. Measure from the top of each frame to its sawtooth hanger, D-rings, or wire. Mark that same distance on the matching template. This step prevents the common mistake of placing a nail where the top of the frame—not the actual hanger—will land.
  8. Tape the templates to the wall. Use painter’s or masking tape. Adjust the layout until the spacing, boundary, visual center, and relationship to the furniture look right.
  9. Inspect from normal viewing positions. Check the group while standing where people will actually see it, rather than judging it only from directly underneath.

Tools and hardware: match the attachment to the wall and load

The correct fastener depends on the wall surface, the weight and dimensions of the frame, the number of attachment points, and whether the piece may be bumped or adjusted repeatedly. A hardware kit is convenient, but no universal kit makes every installation safe.

For a multi-frame project, a stud finder and spirit level help locate stronger attachment points and keep both individual frames and major group alignments straight. A tape measure, pencil, painter’s tape, drill, appropriate bit, and screwdriver are also commonly useful. For heavier or valuable work, select hardware based on the manufacturer’s load information rather than relying on a general picture-hook assortment.

When to use a stud

A stud is the preferred attachment point when available, particularly for heavy frames, mirrors, picture ledges, grouped frames mounted to a common rail, or anything likely to receive an accidental bump. The Smithsonian Museum Conservation Institute recommends appropriately sized, sturdy hardware and advises driving wall hooks into studs for maximum stability.

A stud may not align with the ideal template location. If it does not, either revise the arrangement or use a wall anchor that is specifically appropriate for the wall and load. Do not force a heavy installation onto a small nail simply because a stud is inconveniently located.

When to use drywall anchors

Drywall is not solid structural material, so an ordinary nail or screw can loosen or pull out when it carries a substantial load. If a stud is unavailable, choose an anchor rated for the combined load and suitable for the drywall’s material and thickness. Common types include screw-in anchors, self-drilling anchors, molly bolts, and toggle or butterfly anchors.

Do not treat the largest number printed on an anchor package as a guarantee. Consider the frame’s real weight, the condition and thickness of the drywall, the direction of the load, the number and spacing of attachment points, and the possibility of impact. For readers hanging frames where no stud is available, a rated drywall anchor kit can be useful, provided its instructions and load limits match the installation.

When adhesive picture-hanging strips are appropriate

Adhesive strips can work for lightweight frames on suitable, smooth surfaces, especially where making holes is not permitted. They are not a universal replacement for screws, hooks, or anchors.

Limits are model-specific. For example, 3M’s U.S. Extra Large Black picture hanging strips page states that four pairs can hold frames up to 15 pounds and up to 24 by 36 inches. That specification applies to that product and installation—not to every adhesive strip. Follow the exact package instructions for the number of pairs, frame dimensions, preparation, weight, and removal.

3M’s guidance also identifies restrictions involving wallpaper, recently painted walls, fabric-backed frames, shelves, and some humid environments. Do not use adhesive strips for valuable or irreplaceable artwork unless the manufacturer’s instructions clearly support the product, surface, conditions, and load. For a compatible smooth surface, picture hanging strips may be a renter-friendly option; for heavy, valuable, textured, damp, or uncertain installations, use mechanical hardware or consult a qualified professional.

picture wire and frame hardware

For a frame hung from wire, the wire and its attachment points must be appropriate for the frame’s size and weight. The Smithsonian Museum Conservation Institute recommends a double strand of picture wire secured to eye screws at the left and right sides of the frame. Loose wire, weak screw eyes, or poorly attached hardware can allow the frame to fall or damage the artwork.

Check the back of the frame before transferring measurements. A sawtooth hanger, two D-rings, and picture wire each require a different hole position. For two-point hardware, mark both attachment points rather than assuming the frame will self-level from one central nail.

Installation workflow

  1. Recheck the templates. Confirm that the taped arrangement is level, balanced, and positioned correctly relative to the furniture and viewing height.
  2. Locate studs. Mark any stud positions that can safely support the intended hardware.
  3. Select the hardware. Choose hooks, screws, anchors, wire, or adhesive strips based on the wall surface, frame construction, dimensions, weight, and product instructions.
  4. Mark the attachment points. Mark through the hanger locations on the paper templates, accounting for the distance from the top of each frame to its hanger.
  5. Install the hardware. Drill pilot holes or install anchors as required. Follow the hardware manufacturer’s instructions rather than substituting a different wall material or load assumption.
  6. Remove the templates carefully. Pull the tape slowly so it does not lift paint or damage the wall surface.
  7. Hang the largest or central frame first. Then work outward with the medium and smaller pieces. This follows IKEA’s recommended large-to-medium-to-small sequence and makes it easier to preserve the composition’s balance.
  8. Level each frame. Use a spirit level for individual frames and for the important horizontal or vertical alignments in a grid or structured arrangement.
  9. Inspect the group from the room. Check it from the doorway, sofa, bed, and other principal viewing angles. Correct a frame that is technically level but visually out of place.
  10. Recheck stability. Confirm that hooks, screws, anchors, wire, ledges, and frames are secure after installation.

Common gallery-wall mistakes and fixes

Mistake Better approach
Measuring from the ceiling Position the group in relation to furniture, eye level, the visual center, and normal viewing distance.
Making a mismatched collection into a rigid grid Standardize outer edges and spacing first, or choose an organic or anchored asymmetrical arrangement.
Forgetting the hanger sits below the top of the frame Measure the top-to-hanger distance and mark it on every paper template.
Using one anchor type on every wall Identify the wall surface and select hardware for the actual load and attachment method.
Using adhesive strips for valuable art, wallpaper, textured walls, shelves, or unsupported surfaces Follow the exact product restrictions and use mechanical hardware when conditions are unsuitable.
Drilling before testing the arrangement Make full-size templates and revise the complete composition first.
Leaving one tiny frame to create a dead zone Move the frame closer, adjust the boundary, or replace it with a piece that better balances the neighboring scale.
Making every gap identical in an organic arrangement Allow modest variation while avoiding large, unexplained spaces.

Protecting artwork after it is hung

Frames protect and support artwork as well as complementing it visually; the National Gallery of Art treats framing as part of the artwork’s protection, not merely decoration. Choose frame materials, backing, and glazing that suit the piece instead of selecting solely by room color.

For original, valuable, or preservation-sensitive artwork, consider archival or custom framing rather than treating an ordinary retail frame as conservation protection. Keep valuable artwork away from direct sunlight and heat sources, and avoid unstable humidity. The Smithsonian Museum Conservation Institute identifies studs, stable environmental conditions, and distance from heat and direct sunlight as preferable for paintings.

Adhesive products deserve particular caution: do not rely on them for irreplaceable work unless the exact manufacturer guidance supports the item, surface, environment, and load. When the consequences of failure are high, use properly rated mechanical hardware and seek professional advice.

Printable planning checklist

  • Select a grid, symmetrical, organic, anchored asymmetrical, or ledge-based layout.
  • Choose a visual anchor and one or more repeated design elements.
  • Measure the outside dimensions of every frame and the available wall.
  • Check the relationship to the furniture below; above a sofa or bed, begin with roughly 8 to 10 inches of clearance.
  • Test multiple configurations on the floor and photograph the preferred arrangement.
  • Trace and label full-size paper templates.
  • Measure and mark each hanger position on its template.
  • Tape the templates to the wall and revise before drilling.
  • Locate studs where possible and use correctly rated anchors when necessary.
  • Follow product-specific instructions for adhesive strips.
  • Hang the largest or central frame first, then work outward.
  • Level the group and inspect it from normal viewing positions.
  • Recheck hooks, wire, anchors, ledges, and frame stability after installation.

The practical rule

A successful gallery wall does not require identical frames or perfect symmetry. It needs a clear anchor, a deliberate outside boundary, controlled spacing, and hardware matched to the wall and the weight. The paper-template method lets you experiment before making permanent holes—and usually matters more than whether you choose a grid or a more relaxed arrangement.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the easiest gallery wall layout for beginners?

A grid works best when frames are identical or share a common proportion and the room benefits from an orderly, architectural display. Use consistent outside-edge alignment and spacing; the exact number of frames is less important.

How much space should be between gallery wall frames?

Begin with about 2 to 4 inches between neighboring frames, then adjust for scale. Small frames usually need smaller gaps, while large pieces can use more breathing room. Above a sofa or bed, start with about 8 to 10 inches between the furniture and the bottom of the group.

How high should a gallery wall be hung?

Use 57 inches as a starting point for the visual center of a freestanding gallery wall, rather than forcing every individual frame to that height. Above furniture, maintain the furniture-to-art clearance and adjust the group’s center accordingly.

Should I use nails, drywall anchors, or picture hanging strips?

Use a stud when possible for heavy frames, mirrors, ledges, or pieces likely to be bumped. If there is no stud, choose an anchor specifically rated and designed for the wall material and actual load. Adhesive strips are limited to compatible products, surfaces, conditions, and frame weights.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How can I make a gallery wall without putting holes in the wrong places?

Trace every frame on paper, label the templates, and mark each frame’s actual hanger position—not just its top edge. Tape the templates to the wall, adjust the arrangement, and only then install the hardware.

The Bottom Line

Plan the entire composition before touching the drill: choose the layout, establish the boundary and visual center, template every frame, mark the true hanger positions, and use wall hardware rated for the actual load. That process produces a cleaner display and a safer installation.
