A successful garden layout starts with a measured plan, not a shopping list. Map the boundaries, fixed features, sunlight and growing conditions; then place plants according to their mature size, structure and season of interest. This makes it easier to create a pleasing composition and helps avoid costly changes to paths, beds or other built features later.
Start with a measured site plan
Draw the house, boundaries, doors, windows, existing trees, paths, buildings and other permanent features before deciding where new planting will go. Measure the garden’s outline and the positions of key features: irregular spaces rarely look the way they seem in memory. The Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) recommends using triangulation and offsets to plot uneven boundaries. For an average-sized garden, a scale of 1:50 or 1:100 is often practical, depending on the garden’s longest measurement and the paper available. See the RHS guide to creating a garden plan.
Use graph paper, a pencil and a ruler, plus a long tape measure for borders. Mark dimensions clearly and keep the drawing simple enough to revise. A scale plan is especially useful if you are considering a new patio, path, raised bed or other construction: adjusting lines on paper is easier than altering finished work.
Map the light and conditions before choosing plants
Observe where direct sunlight falls at different times of day and how shade changes through the year. Record shade from buildings and tree canopies, wind exposure and local conditions such as frost pockets or coastal salt. A south- or west-facing border often receives more sun, but nearby structures and trees can make the actual conditions different from the compass direction.

Choose plants to suit the light, soil, climate and exposure you have observed. The RHS advice on planning a garden border recommends considering what you can maintain as well as what will grow: staking, pruning, deadheading, lifting and dividing all take time.
Build the layout from structure to detail
Place the permanent framework first
Begin with evergreen plants and larger structural shrubs that will give the garden form beyond the flowering season. Then add groups of herbaceous perennials or smaller deciduous shrubs. Repeated groups help the planting read as one composition rather than a collection of unrelated plants.
Use foliage, color and seasonal interest together
Consider leaf shape, texture and form alongside flower color. Aim for plants that look good at different times of year; the RHS suggests having something in flower or looking attractive in every month as a design goal. What is achievable depends on the local climate and the plants selected. The RHS also provides sustainable planting combinations for ideas suited to different planting situations.

Space plants for their mature spread
Check each plant’s predicted height and spread on its label or in a reliable plant reference. Use those mature dimensions to position plants, rather than spacing them only by the size of the pots at purchase. For a fuller effect, plants can sometimes be set closer together so their growth knits into a continuous display. The RHS gives the example of a perennial with a 60 cm spread planted about 50 cm apart; this is an example, not a universal spacing rule. Its perennials planting guide explains the approach.

For a general border estimate, RHS guidance suggests five herbaceous perennials, three small shrubs or one large shrub per square metre (11 sq ft). Treat this as a starting point only: the right number depends on each plant’s mature spread and the density you want. For square or rectangular bedding blocks, use ultimate spread as a basis for estimating quantities. In intricate shapes or small blocks, mark every position on a scale plan and set edge plants slightly in from the boundary. See the RHS guidance on bedding plant displays.
Test positions before planting
Once you have a draft layout, place the potted plants on the soil at their intended positions. Step back and adjust the arrangement while checking mature size, color, foliage and flowering season. This simple dry run can reveal gaps, crowded areas or awkward transitions before plants go into the ground. The RHS describes this approach in its guide to creating a garden border.

Small or paved gardens
Where ground area is limited, use vertical space with climbers, walls, railings or staging, and consider containers. Containers allow you to choose the growing medium and control conditions, but they need suitable drainage. Match each plant to the light and available growing medium. The RHS page on planting design for small garden spaces is dated 31 January 2025.

Set a raised bed’s dimensions according to what you plan to grow and how easily you need to reach it. The RHS says a bed narrower than 1.5 m (5 ft) allows access to the centre without standing on the soil. For a long bed, a north-to-south orientation can help distribute sunlight more evenly; place sun-loving crops where the light suits them. Consult the RHS guide to making a raised bed for construction considerations.

Complex bedding patterns
For intricate patterns or small planting blocks, draw the design to scale and plot individual plant positions before buying or planting. This helps translate a decorative pattern into workable spacing and makes it easier to estimate the number of plants required.
Slopes and unstable ground
A general planting layout is not an engineering or erosion-control plan. If a slope is steep or appears unstable, get site-specific advice before building beds, paths or retaining features.
