The airport has not stated the effective date of that permanent closure. A separate notice scheduled weekday construction closures from 16 June 2025, 6am to 6pm; that schedule is not the permanent-closure date.
Why Grogan Road is closing
Perth Airport says the runway project requires the permanent closure of the section of Grogan Road crossing the runway footprint. The project is not simply a roadworks closure: the planned runway will occupy the road’s path. Perth Airport’s New Runway Project FAQ also says a transport review found much of the road’s traffic used it as a shortcut rather than to access Airport Central.
The airport’s approved project summary says the central section had previously been closed to through traffic between 1987 and 2005. It also says the road is to remain open between Abernethy Road and Abbott Road to preserve access to businesses along Abbott Road. The historical summary reported that up to 60 per cent of Grogan Road traffic in peak periods was non-airport traffic using the road as a shortcut; that is a past study finding, not a current traffic count.
Permanent closure versus construction-stage restrictions
Perth Airport’s passenger updates page lists a construction-stage notice for Grogan Road: weekday closures from 6am to 6pm, beginning 16 June 2025. That notice describes restrictions during construction, not the date the permanent closure takes effect. The airport’s reviewed material does not give a final effective date for the permanent closure. Check the live passenger updates before travelling, since access notices and detours can change.

How airport traffic is expected to be redirected
For access to Terminals 1 and 2, the approved runway assessment identifies Roe and Tonkin Highways as alternative routes. A later airport traffic assessment says redirected traffic may use Airport Drive or Horrie Miller Drive, with remaining Grogan Road traffic expected to use Horrie Miller Drive primarily. The appropriate route depends on where a journey starts and its destination; the airport’s planning documents do not establish one replacement route for every driver.
The assessments considered road-network performance with and without the Grogan Road connection and concluded that a tunnel beneath the runway was not warranted. These are planning conclusions, not a guarantee that individual trips will have no delay or congestion.
