Main Roads WA said in April 2025 that pile-driving—the noisiest part of construction on the replacement Fremantle Traffic Bridge—was ahead of schedule and expected to finish that month. That was a forecast for the 2025 piling phase, not a current noise update. Main Roads’ project page, reviewed 5 October 2026, now schedules the bridge’s opening to traffic for 1 November 2026, three months ahead of schedule.
What caused the noise reported in April 2025?
Residents in suburbs beyond North Fremantle told PerthNow they could hear banging and vibration during pile-driving for the new Swan River crossing. The report included a social-media commenter in Beaconsfield saying, “I can barely hear myself think”; this was an individual account, not a survey of residents.
A Main Roads spokesperson identified installation of 60-metre-long piles deep into the riverbed as the noisiest aspect of construction and said the piles were essential structural support for the bridge. The reported 60 metres is the pile length, not a measurement of noise.
“Unfortunately, a temporary increase in noise is an unavoidable aspect of bridge construction. Piling works have been carefully scheduled during daytime hours and are also carried out intermittently to ensure residents are not subjected to continuous noise.”

The spokesperson said the work was scheduled during daytime hours and carried out intermittently. PerthNow reported that the project team had been liaising with neighbouring residents. The article did not give measured noise levels or a decibel reading.
When was pile-driving expected to finish?
On 10 April 2025, the Main Roads spokesperson told PerthNow: “The piling program is ahead of schedule and is expected to be completed in April.” That was the forecast at the time. It should not be read as evidence that pile-driving is continuing now or as a current construction noise assessment. PerthNow’s 10 April 2025 report also quoted a Jetty Bar spokesperson saying trade remained good despite the noise; that was one business’s account, not an assessment of the wider local economy.

What is the bridge project’s status now?
As of the Main Roads WA project page, reviewed 5 October 2026, the replacement bridge is scheduled to open to traffic on 1 November 2026, three months ahead of schedule. A community bridge walk and festival are planned for the morning of 1 November before traffic opens later that day. Finishing work is to continue after opening, including finalising the feature lighting program.
The page’s 5 October progress update says the old bridge demolition and concrete deck pours for the new bridge are complete. Road barrier installation was almost finished; 185 of 192 parapet units were in place; and all four bridge towers were visible with scaffolding removed. These are dated progress details and may change as work proceeds.

Why is the old bridge being replaced?
The original Fremantle Traffic Bridge opened in 1939. Main Roads says it had deteriorated despite strengthening and maintenance. The replacement is being built on the existing alignment and uses an extradosed design, combining cantilevers with cable support. Main Roads lists $215 million in Australian Government funding and $215 million in Western Australian Government funding. Those are listed funding contributions, not an established final project cost.

Main Roads lists the Fremantle Traffic Bridge as closed to traffic while major works are completed. Its current direction for motorists travelling between Fremantle and North Fremantle is to use Stirling Highway. The shared path is also listed as closed, with a signed detour via Stirling Highway. Main Roads identifies buses 998, 999 and 107 as alternatives for crossing the bridge area. Check the live project page for current arrangements before travelling, because closures and detours can change.
