If your Green Mountain Grill (GMG) will not ignite, is not feeding pellets, is smoking from the hopper, or is heating unevenly, start with the symptom-specific checks in the manual for your exact model. Clear ash and pellet buildup and confirm airflow and pellet feed before replacing parts; GMG troubleshooting steps and replacement components are not universal across grill families.
Before troubleshooting, identify your grill
Find the model and generation on the grill or its documentation, then use the matching owner’s manual and parts listing. The checks below are grounded mainly in GMG’s Peak Prime 2.0 manual; its procedures should not be assumed to apply to every GMG model. For another model, follow that grill’s own instructions. Allow the grill to cool before cleaning, and follow its safety directions if smoke or fire behavior seems abnormal.
Why won’t my Green Mountain Grill ignite?
On the Peak Prime 2.0, a failed light or FAL condition can result from restricted airflow, excess pellets, a combustion-fan problem, lack of pellet feed, or a failed igniter. Check the simpler causes before concluding the igniter needs replacement.
- With the grill cool and following the manual, check the firebox for excessive ash or pellet buildup. Either can interfere with normal ignition or airflow.
- Check that the combustion fan turns freely and operates during the startup sequence, as described in the manual.
- Confirm that pellets are feeding into the firebox.
- If there is no obstructive buildup, the fan works properly, and fresh pellets are feeding, GMG’s Peak Prime 2.0 manual says the igniter is likely out and may need replacement. The manual cautions against repeatedly switching the grill off and on during a failed-light condition: each start sequence feeds pellets.
Do not replace the igniter solely because the grill failed to light once. The diagnosis depends on the other checks, and the exact troubleshooting procedure varies by model.
#1 Best Overall
- UPGRADED FROM THE FAN-FAVORITE DAVEY CROCKETT: The GMG Trek Prime 2.0 builds on the beloved Davy Crockett model with sturdier legs, an exterior heat shield adjustment rod, and enhanced stability on uneven terrain - making it an even better companion for camping, tailgating, or backyard BBQs.
- SERIOUS COOKING CAPACITY: The 17.25" × 12.5" grate comfortably fits 1-2 Boston butts, full briskets, or whole turkeys. With a temperature range of 150-550°F in 5° increments, you have precise control whether you're slow smoking or high-heat grilling.
- WIFI CONTROL FROM YOUR PHONE: The built-in digital WiFi controller pairs with a free iOS or Android app, letting you monitor and adjust temperatures from anywhere - no need to hover over the grill during long cooks.
- RUNS ANYWHERE: 12V OR 120V AC - Plug into a standard home outlet or run it off your vehicle's 12V power, giving you full grilling capability whether you're in the backyard or a remote campsite. The chimney also rotates 90° or removes completely for compact storage in truck beds or tight spaces.
- NEARLY READY TO COOK RIGHT OUT OF THE BOX: Arrives about 95% preassembled with just a few simple pieces to attach using the included tools. An optional Trek Cart is available separately for added mobility and a comfortable working height.
Why is my GMG grill not feeding pellets?
If the firebox is not receiving pellets, the Peak Prime 2.0 manual distinguishes between the auger motor engaging and the auger itself turning. Observe the behavior as the matching manual directs; do not assume a procedure for this model fits another grill.
- The auger turns, but pellets do not arrive: Pellets may be bridging above the auger intake. The manual recommends sifting the hopper pellets.
- The motor engages, but the auger does not turn: The manual identifies broken linkage as a possibility and directs owners to contact GMG support.
The manual also provides clearing and re-priming instructions. Because clearing and disassembly steps differ by grill, use the matching owner’s manual or an official GMG repair video rather than applying a generic auger-jam procedure.

What should I check if smoke is coming from the hopper?
For the Peak Prime 2.0, GMG’s checks are to confirm pellets are present, the burn pot is clear, the hopper lid is closed, the combustion fan spins freely, and the pellet dump door is shut. Follow the manual’s safety directions if the smoke or fire behavior is abnormal; do not treat hopper smoke as an igniter diagnosis by default.
How do I address uneven heating?
The Peak Prime 2.0 manual describes adjusting the heat shield toward the hotter side in quarter-inch increments, checking the result, and marking a position that works. This is a model-specific adjustment, not a general calibration instruction for every GMG grill. Check the manual for your grill before moving its heat shield.

How to clean and maintain a GMG pellet grill
GMG’s Ledge Prime 2.0 support material instructs owners to remove interior components and vacuum ash and residue from the grill base and firebox. Refer to your own grill’s manual for the applicable cleaning process. GMG’s official video index includes preventive-maintenance and repair resources, including igniter replacement, component checks, and auger-jam repair. The available guidance does not establish one cleaning interval for every model.
When to contact GMG support
Use the manual’s basic checks for your model first. If the Peak Prime 2.0 auger motor engages but the auger does not turn, its manual points to possible broken linkage and recommends contacting support. Support is also the safer next step when a repair requires disassembly or goes beyond the instructions for your grill.

How to choose the correct replacement part
GMG lists parts by grill family, so “Green Mountain Grill” alone is not enough to establish compatibility. For example, GMG lists ceramic igniter P-1271 for all Prime 12V grills; its parts catalog also lists auger motors for particular Prime families. A control-board listing specifies Daniel Boone Prime/Prime+ compatibility and excludes Choice and DC/Trek models. These examples are not a complete compatibility guide.
- Match the grill’s exact model and revision to the manufacturer’s fit information.
- Confirm the part number, voltage, and connector before ordering or installing.
- Use GMG’s current parts catalog to verify fit. Availability and pricing can change.
A replacement igniter is relevant only after the model’s troubleshooting checks point to igniter failure. The manufacturer listing establishes GMG’s part information; it does not establish compatibility for a particular aftermarket listing or seller.
