GravityLight is an off-grid lamp that turns the slow descent of a raised weight into electricity for an LED. Its documented GL02 system could also power connected SatLight lamps. The idea attracted crowdfunding and was piloted in multiple countries, followed by a commercial launch in Kenya in 2017; current stock and support are not established by the available records.
How GravityLight produces light
The GL02 hangs from a suitable fixture. A user fills a bag with heavy material and winches it upward; as the bag descends, it drives a generator through a gearbox, supplying direct electrical power to an LED. It is therefore neither a battery lamp nor a solar lamp: raising the weight stores the energy that the lamp releases during its descent. The GL02 technical specification recommends connecting no more than four SatLights to the main unit.
GL02 published specifications
The Foundation’s V1.1 specification lists a maximum loaded bag weight of 12.5 kg (27.5 lb), luminous flux of 15 lumens, nominal voltage of 2.7 V DC, maximum electrical power of 0.085 W, and color temperature of 5000 K. These are version-specific published figures, not independent performance-test results. The document notes that specifications and components may change without notice.
The listed GL02 Home System package contains one GL02 unit, two SatLights, two power cables, a zip tie and 14 paper bags. Its specification also lists a 12-month guarantee subject to conditions; that historical product document does not establish current warranty coverage or support.

How long does GravityLight work after one lift?
There is no single runtime established for every GravityLight model. Historical promotional descriptions give differing durations, and the GL02 V1.1 specification does not state a runtime. A duration should therefore be treated as model- and condition-specific, not assumed from the mechanism alone. The UK Crowdfunding Association case study records this as a reader question, but does not make the GL02 specification a source for a universal runtime.
From idea to Kenya launch
Nesta’s historical profile says the project began in 2012 and identifies Jim Reeve and Martin Raddiford as the people who developed the idea. Their stated aim was affordable lighting for places without grid electricity, as a cleaner alternative to kerosene-based products.

The World Bank’s 2020 report, Funding the Sun: New Paradigms for Financing Off-Grid Solar Companies, traces the project’s campaigns and rollout:
- 2013: The first Indiegogo campaign raised $400,000 in 40 days against a $55,000 target. The report says the funds supported a pilot in 26 countries and development of the next product iteration.
- 2015: A second campaign raised $400,000, reported as 128% of its target, with match funding from Ben & Jerry’s. It supported a Kenya commercial pilot that included plans for local assembly.
- 2017: GravityLight launched commercially in Kenya, according to the World Bank report.
- June 2018: A third campaign raised $115,000, reported as 147% of its target, to develop the next-generation product.
The World Bank report said it found no public evidence of commercial scalability. That is a finding in a historical case study, not proof of the project’s present-day status. The available records do not establish current GL02 inventory, authorized sellers, ongoing product support or the organization’s current activity.

What the trial feedback does—and does not—show
A 2015 Buckminster Fuller Institute profile says an off-grid household trial took place in 26 countries and reports that more than 90% of trial participants said they would use GravityLight instead of a kerosene lamp. This is historical, self-reported feedback as presented by the Institute. It is not a representative current adoption rate, nor does it establish long-term reliability or present-day impact.
In an interview, co-inventor Jim Reeves put the design challenge plainly: “The main obstacles were and remain cost and performance.” The Lumino Lighting interview provides that comment; it should be read as his assessment, not as a quantified product comparison.

How to assess GravityLight against other lighting options
The historical case for GravityLight is its unusual energy source: a raised weight can generate light without relying on a charged battery or sunlight during operation. Whether that makes it a practical choice for a particular household depends on evidence not supplied by its mechanism or historical campaigns. Compare options using:
- Usable light and runtime: Check measured brightness and how long the specific lamp operates under the conditions you expect.
- Cost over time: Include purchase price and recurring operating costs, where applicable.
- Effort and setup: Consider how often the weight must be raised, where the lamp can hang, and whether its operation suits the people using it.
- Durability and service: Look for evidence of product life, repair options, replacement parts and local support.
- Availability: Confirm that the exact product is currently sold and supported in your region.
The available sources do not provide a current controlled head-to-head test of GravityLight against solar lanterns, rechargeable lamps or kerosene. These are comparison criteria, not a basis for ranking one option over another.
