The WOOD Store’s Flip-top Tool Bench plan describes a rolling, space-saving stand with a rotating work surface. Its listed finished dimensions are 63 inches long by 30 inches deep by 34 inches high. Those dimensions help you judge the footprint, but the listing does not establish a load rating or enough detail to verify that a particular combination of tools is safe.
What the WOOD Flip-top Tool Bench plan includes
WOOD Store presents the bench as a way to accommodate more tools in a compact footprint, with a work surface that rotates and a stand that can roll away for storage. The plan appeared in WOOD issue 220 in September 2013; the listing says it was updated January 11, 2024. The listing describes the stand as “a lifesaver” for space-starved woodworkers, but that is promotional copy, not a tested performance claim. See the WOOD Store plan listing.
WoodworkersWorkshop also lists paper and PDF versions of the WOOD plan and gives the same finished dimensions, identifying 2013 as its publication date. Retail availability and pricing may change. Check its plan listing.
Will the listed bench fit your shop and tools?
Start by measuring the available floor area for the 63 × 30-inch footprint, then allow room to move around the bench and rotate the surface. The stated 34-inch height is a useful reference for checking tool working height against your other benches, but it is not an independently measured dimension.

- Measure each tool’s base and mounting points against the actual platform dimensions in the plan.
- Check clearances for fences, handles, cords, dust ports, and any parts that extend beyond the tool base as the surface turns.
- Consider the space needed to access the tool in both orientations and to roll the cart into or out of storage.
- Confirm the plan’s joinery and pivot hardware details before deciding whether the bench suits the tools you intend to mount.
The exact-title WOOD listing does not provide a maximum load rating or detailed pivot-hardware specification. Overall dimensions alone cannot establish whether a bench can safely support a planer and miter saw at the same time. Do not assume it can: follow the plan’s structural details, assess each tool’s mounting and operating loads, and seek qualified guidance if those details are insufficient.
How the WOOD plan compares with other flip-top designs
Alternative plans show how much footprint, tool arrangement, and included documentation can vary. Compare them against your actual tools and shop rather than assuming every flip-top bench serves the same setup.

What to verify before building
- Confirm the tool layout. Compare tool bases, mounting holes, and required operating clearances with the plan’s drawings. A plan’s general description is not proof that your tools will fit.
- Check the construction details. Review the cut list, joinery, pivot arrangement, and assembly instructions. If the plan does not show enough detail to evaluate the loads and connections for your intended setup, do not fill in those gaps by guessing.
- Plan for movement and stability. Verify how the cart rolls, how it is held in position, and whether the plan addresses stability during tool use. A mobile base alone does not establish that the bench will remain stable under operation.
- Match casters and other hardware to the design. A separate Saws on Skates 2×4 flip-top cart plan specifies four 3-inch locking casters, plus screws, pocket screws, carriage bolts, lock nuts, washers, nylon spacers, and glue. That supply list is specific to that plan; it does not establish a suitable caster capacity or mounting style for this WOOD bench. See the Saws on Skates plan.
Choosing the right plan for your shop
The WOOD plan is a candidate if its listed footprint and rotating-tool concept suit your space. Before committing, compare the plan’s actual drawings and instructions with your tools, and make sure they provide enough information to assess fit, construction, movement, and stability. Choose a different design if its platform dimensions or integrated work surfaces better match your equipment, or if it provides planning details you need and the WOOD listing does not establish.
