Neither granite nor engineered quartz is best for every kitchen. Granite is natural stone with slab-to-slab variation; countertop quartz is a manufactured surface with a more controlled pattern. The practical choice comes down to the specific slab or collection, your tolerance for care requirements, how you handle hot cookware, and the full installed quote. Here, “quartz” means engineered quartz surface—not natural quartzite.

Granite vs. quartz: what is the difference?

Decision Granite Engineered quartz
What it is Natural stone whose appearance and characteristics reflect its geological composition. A manufactured surface containing quartz mineral and other constituents; the exact formulation varies by manufacturer and product. See Caesarstone’s overview of quartz.
Appearance Natural pattern and color variation can differ across a slab, so inspect the actual piece where pattern continuity matters. Often has more controlled patterning, though color and pattern still depend on the product. A sample may not exactly represent the finished surface.
Sealing Some slabs may benefit from an impregnating sealer, but many do not need one. Ask the supplier about the specific stone. Caesarstone says its quartz surfaces do not require sealing. Check care guidance for the exact brand and collection.
Heat and care Use trivets or mats and follow stone-specific cleaning and maintenance guidance. Use trivets or hot pads; Caesarstone advises against placing hot cookware directly on its surfaces. Follow your product’s care instructions.

Which countertop is better for your kitchen?

Choose by appearance

Granite is a fit if you want natural variation and are willing to choose from the actual slab. Engineered quartz may suit you if you prefer a more controlled pattern, but do not assume every quartz product is uniform: view a full slab or a large sample before deciding.

Choose by care preferences

If you want to avoid sealing decisions, engineered quartz is straightforward according to Caesarstone’s guidance. Granite does not automatically require sealing; the Natural Stone Institute states, “Most granite countertops do not need to be sealed.” A sealer can increase stain resistance, but it does not make stone stain-proof. Ask the supplier whether your particular slab needs treatment.

Choose by cooking habits

For either surface, make trivets or hot pads part of your kitchen routine. Natural-stone care guidance recommends trivets or mats, and Caesarstone specifically says to protect its quartz surfaces from hot cookware. Avoid treating either material as immune to heat damage or thermal shock.

Consider test results narrowly

Consumer Reports rated granite and quartz “Excellent” in its tests of cutting, abrasion, and heat resistance, while identifying stain resistance and appearance as differentiators. That is a result from its test setup, not a guarantee for every slab, finish, or current product. Read Consumer Reports’ comparison.

How to clean and maintain each surface

Granite

The Natural Stone Institute recommends warm water with a neutral cleaner, stone soap, or mild liquid dish detergent. Blot spills promptly, rinse, and dry. Avoid acids or abrasives that are unsuitable for the specific stone. Its guidance also emphasizes that sealing is a repellent treatment, not a guarantee against stains. See the Institute’s care and cleaning guidance and its position on sealing natural-stone countertops, adopted in 2006.

Engineered quartz

Caesarstone recommends mild soap and water for routine cleaning and cautions against harsh chemicals and unsuitable cleaners. These directions are specific to Caesarstone; follow the guide for the brand and collection you buy. See Caesarstone’s care and maintenance guidance.

What to compare in countertop quotes

Compare installed quotes with the same scope, not just a per-material price. Confirm the slab or collection and whether the quote includes:

  • Thickness, finish, and edge profile
  • Sink and cooktop cutouts, seams, and backsplash
  • Delivery, removal of an existing counter, fabrication, and installation
  • Warranty coverage and any care or heat limitations

For granite, ask whether the specific slab is factory-treated or needs an impregnating sealer, which product is compatible, and what maintenance the supplier recommends. For quartz, request the exact collection’s care, heat, warranty, and outdoor-use limitations. If reviewing Caesarstone samples, note its guidance that actual product may differ slightly from a sample and that seeing a full slab is helpful; see its BLDR Line sample information.

A practical way to make the decision

  1. Set your priorities: decide how much natural variation you want, how important a controlled pattern is, and whether you are comfortable following stone-specific care guidance.
  2. Inspect the material: view the actual granite slab or a sufficiently large quartz sample, especially if you care about pattern continuity.
  3. Get product-specific answers: ask about sealing for the granite slab and heat, cleaning, warranty, and outdoor-use instructions for the exact quartz collection.
  4. Compare complete installed scopes: line up the same cutouts, edges, backsplash, delivery, removal, fabrication, and installation before weighing quotes.
