Start with where the rack will sit
A countertop rack generally benefits from a tray or another way to manage water. An over-sink rack may let water drain directly into the basin without a separate tray. Choose based on the space available and where water can safely go.
For a countertop setup, make sure the tray fits the rack and the usable counter area. Confirm that its slope or outlet sends water toward the sink rather than onto the counter. For an over-sink setup, verify that the rack fits the sink and does not interfere with the faucet or access to the basin.

- Check drain direction. Confirm where the slope or outlet will send water and whether it reaches the sink.
- Check faucet clearance and access. Make sure the setup does not obstruct the faucet or make the sink difficult to use.

MUJI’s US listing describes a stainless-steel tray with a silicone-rubber stopper and a slanted design intended to let water flow. Its listed dimensions are 15.6 × 10.8 × 1.2 inches (39.5 × 27.5 × 3 cm). The rack is sold separately, so check that the tray and rack dimensions work together and fit your counter. MUJI advises using the tray with its stainless basket, not placing dishes directly on the tray, and lifting it rather than dragging it to avoid scratching the counter. The maker also says to wash and thoroughly dry the tray after use, warning that rust may occur otherwise. Countertop tray or over-sink rack?
A countertop tray can suit a rack placed beside the sink, provided it fits the counter and has a workable drainage path. An over-sink rack is an alternative when its support, dimensions, faucet clearance, and access to the basin suit your setup. Naho Home’s manufacturer FAQ recommends checking usable sink-area width, faucet height, vertical clearance, support, and sink access for over-sink racks; it says countertop models usually benefit from a drainboard.
