Composting turns suitable organic waste into compost through microbial decomposition. The available DepEd activity sheets explain the basics and a basket-composting procedure, but they are labeled Grade 7 TLE/AFA—not Grade 9. The exact Grade 9 PDF named in the title could not be confirmed.

What composting means

DepEd’s AFA-TLE 7 Q2-LAS-9 activity sheet defines composting as “the biological process where microorganisms break down organic matter like food scraps, leaves, and garden waste into nutrient-rich soil called compost.” Read the DepEd composting and fermentation activity sheet.

In waste management, composting is a way to reuse suitable organic material rather than discard it. The result is compost; it is not the same process as making a fermented product.

What materials and conditions does composting need?

Balance browns and greens

The activity sheet groups dry leaves, straw, shredded paper, and wood chips as carbon-rich “browns.” Fruit and vegetable scraps, grass clippings, and coffee grounds are nitrogen-rich “greens.” Both kinds of material contribute to the composting mix.

Compost Tumbler Bin Composter Dual Chamber 43 Gallon (Bundled with Pearson's Gardening Gloves)
  • ✅Speed Up Composing Process: More advanced models use rotating to bring oxygen to the center of the bin and paddles inside the chamber to help mix and aerate the composting materials when turned. These improvements or modifications are designed for one reason: to speed the composting process.
  • ✅How do Compost Tumblers work? Simple. You load them with green and brown waste from your yard and kitchen. When full, you give them time to work, in other words, heat up. Turning a compost pile mixing the organic materials and the organisms it contains with heat-producing oxygen is the traditional method of keeping the process going full steam. By turning the tumbler, the organic materials are mixed and infused with fresh oxygen.
  • ✅Easy to Access Finished Compost: Just Slide the door open and take the organic fertilizer out when the compost is ready. When a check reveals the compost is complete —and this can happen in a matter of weeks —the same access that allowed you to fill the tumbler lets you empty it. Now is the time to spread the results.
  • ✅Dual-Bin Design: The dual bin design takes a different approach to the continuous-use composted concept, Two bins are set side-by-side into a single rotating chamber. Thickly insulated compartments conserve the heat generating by the decaying matter, and this greatly speeds the process. This design also allows you to add food waste to one chamber while the other is composting.
  • ✅Totally Organic and Money-Saving: If you're looking for a fast, convenient way to compost your kitchen throw-outs, grass clippings, and organic yard waste, our outdoor kitchen compost bin is just right for you! The Compact Compost Tumbler quickly recycles it into nutrient-rich compost.

Keep the mixture moist and aerated

Water supports microbial activity. The sheet describes suitable moisture as like a wrung-out sponge: moist, but not saturated. Oxygen is also needed for aerobic composting, so turning the pile helps air reach its contents.

How to make compost in a basket

DepEd’s basket-composting activity uses home organic garbage, garden and farm waste, animal manure, and leguminous plants such as ipil-ipil leaves. Its materials include a basket at least one foot in diameter and bamboo strips one foot high. Follow the activity’s method as a garden-scale procedure:

How composting differs from fermentation

The DepEd activity sheet distinguishes the processes by oxygen needs: composting is aerated, while fermentation may take place without oxygen. Their inputs and outputs also differ: composting uses carbon-rich browns and nitrogen-rich greens to make compost, while the sheet discusses sugar as an input in fermentation, which produces fermented products. They should not be treated as interchangeable methods.

How this connects to school waste management

DepEd’s 2014 National Greening Program guidance includes composting alongside minimization, segregation at source, reduction, recycling, and reuse. This is a dated policy reference, not a newly issued rule. Read DepEd Order No. 5, s. 2014.

Which grade level do the available DepEd materials cover?

The composting and basket-composting sheets cited here are identified as TLE/AFA Grade 7 materials for 2025–2026, not Grade 9 lessons. DepEd’s Learning Portal catalogs an older compost/basket-composting resource as Grade 4, while its Grade 9 TLE portal lists Grade 9 materials including Organic Agriculture modules. These listings do not confirm a Grade 9 PDF with the exact title “Grade 9 TLE: Composting Techniques.”
