Its source document, attributed to i-Link College of Science and Technology in Midsayap, Cotabato, for school year 2019–2020, teaches the purpose, styles, materials and steps of table skirting through group identification, discussion, hands-on application, a quiz and a materials assignment. The document’s title metadata includes “Behavior Modification,” but its lesson text does not describe a behavior-modification method.
What the Grade 9 lesson plan covers
The plan introduces table skirting as decorative fabric coverage for occasions, including a way to conceal table legs. Its stated objectives are for learners to understand the function, guidelines and steps of table skirting; identify styles and materials; and appreciate different styles. The source is a lesson document marked school year 2019–2020, not proof of current policy or of measured classroom outcomes. Read the source lesson plan.
The Philippine Department of Education’s May 2016 K to 12 Home Economics – Food and Beverage Services (NC II) Curriculum Guide places table skirting in food-service preparation. It gives the competency: “Skirt properly buffet or display tables taking into account symmetry, balance and harmony in size and design.” The guide is a curriculum reference dated 2016; check current curriculum policy before relying on it as a statement of present implementation. Lesson sequence: from identification to practice
- Begin with preliminaries and review. The source plan starts with classroom preliminaries and a review, setting up the topic rather than beginning directly with a practical demonstration.
- Have groups identify styles from pictures. Learners work in groups to identify table-skirting styles from visual examples.
- Present and discuss. Groups share their identifications, followed by teacher-led presentation and discussion of purposes, guidelines, styles, materials and steps.
- Apply the skill in groups. Learners carry out a group table-skirting activity and present their work. Use the presentation to assess the finished arrangement, not just recall of style names.
- Check understanding and assign preparation. The plan includes a quiz asking learners to list styles and materials, then assigns them to bring table-skirting materials.
A later Grade 12 Food and Beverage Services lesson plan provides another classroom example of learners identifying materials, appreciating table skirting and performing the skill; it is corroborating context, not the authority for this Grade 9 plan. View the Grade 12 example.
Materials and classroom preparation
The source plan names tablecloths, skirting cloths, pins, thumbtacks and beads for the practical work. It also lists a laptop, chalkboard and flash cards as classroom resources. The source does not specify fabric dimensions, weights, brands, fastening designs or prices, so select supplies to suit the table, activity and classroom rather than treating one size or product as prescribed.

- Prepare a table and clean, pressed cloth suitable for the planned demonstration.
- Decide whether pins or thumbtacks are appropriate for the learners, furniture and room. The plan lists them, but teachers should assess safety for their own setting.
- Use picture examples or flash cards to support the identification activity; a laptop is listed as an additional resource, not a requirement established for every classroom.
- Have learners bring agreed materials for the practical lesson, as the source plan assigns.
Styles named in the source plan
The document names box pleats, double pleats, candle, butterfly, rose and diamond styles. Its list and explanations are not fully consistent, so treat these as styles named by this particular lesson plan rather than a definitive universal classification. For instruction, have learners connect their chosen look to the table’s dimensions and the intended buffet or display.
Guidelines and a practical assessment rubric
The source lesson emphasizes clean, pressed fabric, a suitable floor-length drop, design balance, sanitation, safety and “clean as you go.” Those ideas can be translated into observable criteria for the group performance. The curriculum guide specifically foregrounds symmetry, balance and harmony in size and design; the following checks are practical teaching recommendations based on that competency, not reported test results.

- Symmetry and balance: Do pleats and decorative elements appear balanced across the table, in proportion to its size and intended display?
- Neatness: Is the fabric clean and pressed, with a tidy, consistent appearance?
- Attachment and safety: Is the skirt secured appropriately for the materials and classroom, without creating avoidable hazards?
- Work habits: Do learners maintain sanitation and clean as they go?
Use the same criteria when groups present their work so learners can see how design choices and safe, neat execution contribute to the finished display. Do not treat the source’s mention of pins and thumbtacks as a requirement to use them in every classroom.

Preserve the lesson’s progression from recognition to explanation to performance, but align terminology, timing and materials with the current curriculum and the resources available locally. Because the source plan is from 2019–2020 and the cited DepEd guide is dated May 2016, neither alone establishes current implementation requirements. Before teaching, verify applicable school guidance and choose age-appropriate fastening methods and assessment expectations.
