A construction phase at Gourdneck State Game Area in Portage is nearing its expected finish, with paved parking, a vault toilet and a trail connection to Hampton Lake’s kayak launch and fishing platform among the improvements. In an October 5, 2026 release, the Michigan Department of Natural Resources said most heavy work was expected to wrap up early that month; that was a forecast, not confirmation that every feature is complete. Visitors should check current closure notices before heading to Hampton Lake Trail.
What is being built at Gourdneck State Game Area?
The Michigan DNR Wildlife Division’s access-improvement project focuses on Hampton Lake Trail and visitor access to the lake. The October 5, 2026 announcement described paved parking, a vault toilet and a trail leading to a kayak launch and fishing platform. The project is intended to improve public access; the available update does not confirm that every element in the original grant scope has been finished.
The 2021 Michigan Natural Resources Trust Fund board recommendation for the project describes enlarging and resurfacing the Hampton Lake Trail parking lot to 60 by 100 feet, adding boulders to prevent vehicles from entering the game area, installing a kiosk, and building an accessible boardwalk to a scenic fishing deck and accessible kayak launch. These are elements of the recommended scope, not a current completion checklist.
What is the project timeline and funding?
The updates reflect different stages of the same project. The DNR’s April 7, 2026 open-project report listed Gourdneck SGA Access Improvements, grant 21-0163 / contract C90113, as having completed final design and engineering and gone out to bid. By October 5, the agency reported construction underway and forecast that most heavy work would finish early in October.

| Funding phase | Amount and work described | Status context |
|---|---|---|
| Current access-improvement phase | $300,000 Michigan Natural Resources Trust Fund grant, plus DNR Wildlife Division funds. The grant recommendation describes parking improvements, a kiosk, an accessible boardwalk, a fishing deck and kayak launch. | The October 5, 2026 DNR release described construction progress and an expected finish for most heavy work, not verified completion of every planned feature. |
| Earlier Gourdneck SGA Development Initiative | $113,000 Trust Fund grant for west-entrance improvements along Angling Road, upgraded parking, a comfort station, and an accessible trail with resting stations and benches overlooking Hampton Creek wetland. | A DNR status record dated December 8, 2025 said the final scope item was estimated to be completed by the end of 2025. |
What should visitors know during construction?
The October release said Hampton Lake Trail would have some closures during construction, while the surrounding land remained open to hunting. At that time, visitors were directed to park in the lot beside Centre Avenue and not block the drive entrance, which was marked with construction cones. Conditions and access instructions can change as work progresses, so check Michigan.gov/Closures for current notices and follow signs, cones and other safety markers at the site.
Where is the game area, and what is it like?
Gourdneck State Game Area comprises four sections totaling more than 2,290 acres, almost entirely within Portage city limits in Kalamazoo County, according to the October 2026 announcement. The DNR describes it as a destination for hunting, hiking, bird-watching, fishing and other outdoor activities, with lowlands, creeks, hills and habitat that includes prairie fens.

Hampton Creek Wetlands is a distinct natural area within Gourdneck SGA, not the acreage of the entire game area. The DNR’s profile lists the wetlands site at 60 acres, about eight miles south of Kalamazoo, and describes a floodplain wetland complex with southern sedge meadow, fen, mesic-wet prairie and wet northern forest. The profile identifies nine plant species there as threatened in Michigan.

The access project serves people using Hampton Lake for different activities, while the surrounding game area remains a working outdoor destination. DNR wildlife biologist Don Poppe urged visitors to put safety first, particularly around active work sites and any marked closures. The new and planned access features also connect to a wetland landscape whose natural communities are part of the site’s value, making it important to stay on designated routes and respect barriers.
