Yes—but not every Nest speaker gets every Gemini feature. Google is rolling out Gemini for Home, a household voice assistant that replaces Google Assistant on compatible Google Home and Nest speakers and displays. Existing hardware can receive the upgrade; buying Google’s new $99.99 U.S. Google Home Speaker is not required.
What is Gemini for Home?
Gemini for Home is not the same as the personal Gemini app on a phone. Google designed it as a shared household assistant integrated with Google Home. It is intended to understand more natural requests, follow-up questions, corrections and multi-step commands.

For example, Google says users can ask it to turn off every light except a bedside lamp, dim lights, play music and set a timer in one sentence. It can also handle ordinary questions, recipes, explanations, timers, music and compatible smart-home controls.

Is Google Assistant gone?
For a home that opts into Gemini for Home, compatible devices use Gemini instead of Google Assistant. Google says the change is irreversible: once a home switches, it cannot switch back to Google Assistant. Devices added to that home later will also use Gemini for Home.

Google lists minimum firmware of Cast 3.76 or later for speakers and Fuchsia 28 or later for displays. Third-party Google-compatible speakers and displays may support most Gemini for Home features, but Gemini Live may not be supported. Check Google’s current compatibility and feature information for the exact model and country.
What is free?
Google says the core assistant functions do not require a separate Gemini subscription:

- Controlling compatible smart-home devices
- Setting timers
- Playing music
- Asking ordinary questions
- Using natural-language requests
These functions still require a Google Account, the Google Home app, compatible devices where applicable, Wi-Fi and an internet connection. Google also warns that Gemini responses should be checked for accuracy.
What requires Google Home Premium?
Gemini Live—the more fluid, interruptible, back-and-forth conversation mode—requires Google Home Premium. Premium also adds camera and automation features.

Advanced video features require compatible cameras or doorbells, so they offer little value to a speaker-only household. Google says Home Premium is included with Google AI Pro and Ultra plans, with the included tier depending on the plan. Existing Nest Aware subscribers were moved to corresponding Home Premium plans according to Google’s pricing information. Prices and availability vary by country.

Google says eligible users receive an in-app notification as access becomes available. Use this sequence:
- Update the Google Home app.
- Install available speaker or display firmware updates. Android users should also update Speech Recognition and Synthesis.
- Open Google Home and follow the Gemini for Home availability or early-access prompt.
- Review household, Voice Match, child-safety and privacy settings before enrolling.
- Test a basic command, then try a follow-up question.
To enable the free Continued Conversation feature, go to Home Settings → Gemini for Home voice assistant → Continued Conversation.

If the prompt is missing, confirm the home is in a participating country, check the selected language, update the app and firmware, restart the speaker and router, and check whether another household member already enrolled the home. A missing prompt does not necessarily mean the device is incompatible; access is rolling out over time.

Gemini for Home is designed for shared spaces, so review activity history, Voice Match, child settings, Continued Conversation, camera and microphone permissions, and household-member access. Google says users can review or delete Gemini for Home activity in the Google Home app.
Google also says voice-matched children receive a filtered experience. That is a control, not a guarantee that every unsuitable response will be blocked. Avoid treating a shared speaker as a private place for sensitive questions.

Do you need the new Google Home Speaker?
No. Existing compatible Nest and Google Home devices can receive Gemini for Home. The new Google Home Speaker is the first speaker designed specifically around Gemini, not the only way to access the basic assistant upgrade.
Keep an existing speaker if it remains reliable and you mainly want better questions, timers, music, natural-language commands and basic smart-home control. Consider the new speaker if you want newer hardware, the latest Gemini-focused design, better audio, Google TV Streamer pairing or a replacement for aging equipment. Google says two new speakers can pair with a Google TV Streamer for a small home-theater setup.
The purchase decision is separate from the subscription decision. Buying new hardware does not make Gemini Live or advanced camera functions free.

Check your existing model and firmware before spending money. Gemini for Home can make compatible Nest speakers more conversational while preserving free core functions, but the rollout is not universal, some older and third-party devices have feature limits, and Google says opting in cannot be undone. Pay for Home Premium only if Gemini Live, camera intelligence or extended video history justifies the recurring U.S. cost.
