Its integrated 5-kWh lithium-iron-phosphate battery stores energy from a U.S. 120-volt outlet, then supplies the short, high-power bursts needed by the cooktop and convection oven.
That makes Charlie especially interesting for homes converting from gas where rewiring, panel work, or opening walls would be expensive. It is not, however, a universal plug-and-play appliance: the 354-pound range still needs suitable space, outlet placement, delivery planning, and potentially qualified gas or electrical work.

What is Copper Charlie?
Charlie is a 30-inch freestanding induction range—not a countertop hot plate or emergency cooker. It combines:
- Four induction cooking zones
- A 4.55-cubic-foot convection oven
- An integrated 5-kWh LFP battery
- Physical controls, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth connectivity
- A 120-volt connection intended for a standard U.S. 15-amp outlet
Its key difference from a conventional induction range is the battery. Most full-size induction ranges require a dedicated 240-volt circuit. Charlie gradually charges through its lower-power connection and uses stored energy when cooking demands rise. Copper describes this architecture on its product page.
#1 Best Overall
- PORTABLE INDUCTION BURNER: Duxtop induction cooktop uses 110/120 V 15 amp electrical outlet–standard in all North American homes. ETL listed and built to North American electrical standards. It is lightweight and compact for easy handling and storage
- Choose from 20 preset power levels (100 to 1800 W) and 20 preset temperature level settings (100 °F to 460 °F). With an 83% energy efficiency, induction burner is more efficient than traditional gas or electric stoves
- DIGITAL LCD SENSOR: Touch control panel: child safety lock keeps the cooking and timer settings from being accidentally changed once they have been set; fast boil button; keep warm button (for 1-30 minutes at 140 °F); up to 10-hour timer button
- Induction stoves rely on cookware to heat, so it’s essential to choose magnetic bottom cookware with a minimum diameter of 5 inches. Auto-pan detection will shut off automatically after 60 seconds if no cookware, or the incorrect cookware is detected
- Although induction itself is a noiseless process, there may be high pitched sounds from the cookware due to multiple layers of metals sandwiched together. Please allow the induction cooker to cool down before cleaning
How the 120-volt system works
- The outlet supplies electricity continuously at a relatively modest rate.
- The internal battery stores that energy.
- An inverter and battery deliver higher-power bursts to the induction zones and oven.
- The battery replenishes between cooking sessions.
This is why “plug-in” does not mean “works anywhere.” The outlet must be correctly installed and suitably located, the home’s wiring must meet the installation requirements, and the range must have safe clearances. The available documentation does not establish that every shared kitchen circuit is acceptable or that extension cords are permitted, so those questions should be confirmed with Copper or a qualified electrician.

Installation: “no rewiring” still requires planning
Charlie can avoid the usual 240-volt range-circuit project, but the installation is not automatically effortless. Before ordering, confirm:
- The opening, depth, height, wall, countertop, hood, and door clearances
- The location and suitability of the existing 120-volt outlet
- Whether the outlet must be moved or recessed for a flush installation
- How the 354-pound appliance will enter the home and reach the kitchen
- Whether the floor, stairs, doorways, and cabinets can accommodate delivery
- Who will disconnect and remove the old range
- Who will cap a gas line if replacing a gas appliance
- Whether Copper-supported installation is available at the address
Copper says installation is approximately an hour and can include gas-range removal, gas-line capping, and haul-away in listed markets. Outside those areas, a buyer may need to coordinate delivery, appliance installation, electrical work, and plumbing independently. Apartment and condominium residents may also need landlord, property-manager, or board approval.
A 30-inch opening alone is not enough. The outlet position and rear clearance can determine whether the range sits correctly, and gas disconnection or capping should be handled by a qualified professional where required by local rules.
How well does Charlie cook?
The four induction zones are specified at up to 2.8 kW each. Copper claims that Charlie can boil water up to three times faster than gas and preheat to 325°F in four minutes. Milk Street reports boiling a large pot in four to five minutes and reaching 400°F or hotter in roughly the same time.

For a holiday meal using every zone and the oven continuously, available performance may depend more heavily on battery state and energy management.
Cookware compatibility
Induction requires a magnetic cooking surface. Cast iron and magnetic stainless steel generally work. Nonmagnetic aluminum, copper, and glass cookware will not heat unless the base includes an induction-compatible magnetic layer.
Test pans with a magnet on the underside. Magnetic attraction is a useful first check, but pan diameter, flatness, and construction also affect results. Copper lists a minimum pan-pairing size of approximately 4 1/3 inches. Rough cast iron can scratch the glass-ceramic surface, so it should be handled carefully.
What happens during a power outage?
Copper says the 5-kWh battery can support approximately three to five full meals during an outage. The strongest independent evidence available is a CalMTA field study of 32 Charlie installations in affordable-housing apartments.

Across 6,175 documented cooking events from November 2024 through May 2025, the battery supported 99.98% of events. It fell below 1% charge once and below 10% less than 10% of the time. That is reassuring evidence for routine household cooking, but it does not prove that every household can cook indefinitely during a prolonged outage or that every high-demand combination receives maximum output.

Outage cooking depends on the starting charge, meal size, oven use, cooking method, and simultaneous loads. Charlie is not a whole-home battery: do not assume it can power refrigerators, lighting, or other household circuits unless Copper explicitly confirms that capability.
Is the integrated battery safe?
Charlie uses lithium-iron-phosphate chemistry. Copper describes LFP as a chemistry used in electric vehicles and home energy storage and presents it as suitable for the appliance. That is a manufacturer characterization, not proof of zero fire risk or a substitute for verifying independent appliance and battery certifications.
Before buying, ask about required clearances, ventilation, certification, battery replacement, end-of-life recycling, warranty exclusions, and whether the battery is serviceable. The available product information confirms a five-year battery warranty but does not establish expected battery life beyond that period, replacement cost, or the replacement procedure.
Environmental advantages—and limits
Replacing a gas range with induction eliminates combustion at the cooking appliance. Charlie may also avoid the construction materials and labor associated with installing a new high-amperage range circuit. Its battery can potentially shift charging to periods when electricity is cheaper or renewable generation is more available.
Those benefits should not be overstated. A battery does not automatically make cooking renewable or emissions-free. The result depends on the local grid mix, charging behavior, battery efficiency and manufacturing, battery life, and the appliance being replaced. Incentive eligibility is also location-, income-, program-, and date-dependent; verify any rebate at the buyer’s address.

The meaningful comparison is total installed cost:
- Charlie, freight, delivery, and installation
- Gas-line capping and old-appliance removal where needed
- Any outlet relocation or electrical work
- Cookware replacement
- A conventional induction range plus a 240-volt circuit, panel work, permits, and wall repair
- The value of outage cooking and the five-year battery warranty
Charlie may be financially sensible when electrical construction is difficult or disruptive. If a compliant 240-volt circuit already exists, a conventional induction range will often offer more choice and a lower appliance cost. Obtain a written local electrician’s estimate before assuming rewiring is prohibitively expensive.

Conventional 240-volt induction range
This is usually the better-value option when a suitable circuit already exists or can be added easily. It avoids integrated-battery aging and offers a broad appliance market, but it normally will not cook during a power outage.
Portable induction cooktop
A portable unit is useful for renters, temporary cooking, backup use, or testing induction cookware. It costs far less and is easy to move, but it does not provide a full four-zone range or integrated oven.
Impulse battery-integrated cooktop
Impulse offers a battery-integrated cooktop rather than a complete range. Its product page describes 120-volt or 240-volt operation, a 3-kWh LFP battery, and claimed output of up to 10,000 watts per burner. The cooktop requires a separate oven, and its battery extends below the countertop, creating clearance and ventilation constraints for an oven beneath it.
Who should buy Copper Charlie?
Charlie is a strong fit if:
- Your kitchen lacks a practical 240-volt range circuit.
- Panel work or wall opening would be unusually expensive or disruptive.
- You want a normal full-size range and oven, not a countertop solution.
- Cooking during outages has meaningful value.
- You are replacing gas and want to eliminate indoor combustion.
- You prefer physical controls and can manage a 354-pound appliance.
- Delivery and qualified installation are available locally.
It is a poor fit if:
- A suitable 240-volt circuit is already present.
- Your priority is the lowest upfront appliance price.
- The kitchen cannot meet the depth, clearance, outlet, or delivery requirements.
- You expect whole-home backup power.
- You regularly need maximum output from every zone and the oven simultaneously.
- You are outside the service area and cannot coordinate qualified contractors.
- Your cookware is mostly nonmagnetic and you do not want to replace it.
Final verdict
Copper Charlie is a credible solution to a specific construction problem: replacing a gas or conventional range when adding a 240-volt circuit is costly, disruptive, or impractical. Its integrated battery gives a full-size induction range access to a 120-volt connection and provides useful outage-cooking capability.
The trade-off is substantial price and added complexity. At roughly $6,000, Charlie is difficult to justify when a compliant 240-volt circuit is already available. Its weight, outlet placement, gas work, service-area limits, battery warranty, and long-term replacement questions must be part of the decision—not afterthoughts. For the right constrained kitchen, it is genuinely innovative; for everyone else, a conventional induction range may be the better-value installation.
