Google has stopped planning new Nest thermostat launches for Europe, but it has not switched off every European Nest thermostat. On April 25, 2025, Google said existing European Nest Learning Thermostat 3rd-generation and Nest Thermostat E units would remain available only while supplies lasted. Separately, Google ended app and cloud support for 1st- and 2nd-generation Nest Learning Thermostats on October 25, 2025.
For most owners, this is a product-lifecycle and replacement-planning issue—not an immediate loss of heating. The important question is which model you have and how it controls your boiler, hot water, heat pump or heating zones.

What Google actually stopped
The headline “Google stops making Nest thermostats for Europe” compresses several different events:
- No new European launches: Google said it would not launch new Nest thermostat models in Europe, citing the region’s varied heating systems and hardware and software requirements. 9to5Google reported the April 25, 2025 announcement.
- Sell-through of existing products: Google said the European 3rd-generation Nest Learning Thermostat and Nest Thermostat E would remain available while supplies lasted.
- A separate older-device shutdown: 1st- and 2nd-generation Nest Learning Thermostats lost Nest and Google Home app and cloud support on October 25, 2025.
That distinction matters. “Google has left the European thermostat market” is a reasonable description of its new-product strategy. “Every European Nest thermostat has stopped working” is not accurate.

Which Nest models are affected?
| Model | Status | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Nest Learning Thermostat, 1st generation | App and cloud support ended October 25, 2025 | Basic control remains on the thermostat, but remote and cloud features are gone. |
| Nest Learning Thermostat, 2nd generation | App and cloud support ended October 25, 2025 | The same limitations apply, including to the European 2014 model. |
| Nest Learning Thermostat, 3rd generation, European version | No new European successor announced; remaining stock was sell-through stock | Existing units were not automatically disabled, but future replacement availability is uncertain. |
| Nest Thermostat E | Existing European stock only | Google’s availability page still lists it in selected countries, but stock and support must be checked locally. |
| Nest Learning Thermostat, 4th generation | Listed by Google for the United States and Canada, not Europe | Do not assume the North American model can replace a European Nest. |
If you are unsure which model you own, use Google’s Nest thermostat model-identification guide. Check the thermostat itself, its base, packaging and the attached Heat Link rather than relying only on its appearance.
What changed for 1st- and 2nd-generation owners?
Google’s October 25, 2025 cutoff removed more than remote temperature adjustment. Owners of affected thermostats lost:

- Notifications
- Third-party assistant control
- Home/Away Assist

The thermostat can still provide basic local heating control. Owners can use the device itself, change temperature modes and continue using preset schedules. However, “it still heats the house” does not mean it still works as originally sold: cloud services, integrations, notifications and security maintenance have ended. Google describes the remaining functions and limitations in its support announcement.

Does a European 3rd-generation Nest still work?
The available evidence does not show that Google disabled all European 3rd-generation units. That model was not included in the 1st- and 2nd-generation shutdown list, and Google’s software history records a European-only version 6.4 update in September 2025.
That does not provide a guaranteed future support period. Google has stopped announcing new European Nest thermostat hardware, so owners should expect less certainty around replacements, Heat Link availability and long-term product support. A working 3rd-generation thermostat or Thermostat E does not need to be replaced solely because Google stopped launching new European models, but documenting the installation and planning for eventual replacement is sensible.
Why European Nest replacements are complicated
European heating is not one standardized market. Homes may use combi boilers, system boilers, heat-only boilers, heat pumps, hydronic underfloor heating, radiator zones or separate domestic hot-water controls. Wiring, voltage, boiler protocols, installer practices and national requirements also vary.

Google’s regional compatibility guide explains that European and North American Nest systems use materially different hardware and control arrangements. European installations may involve:
- A Heat Link rather than the North American wiring arrangement
- Higher-voltage or mains-voltage control requirements
- Boiler rather than forced-air heating control
- Domestic hot-water control
- OpenTherm or another modulating control protocol
- Heat-pump or multi-zone configurations
A thermostat being branded “Nest” does not make it a universal replacement. A North American Nest is generally designed around 24-volt heating and cooling systems. Importing a US Nest Learning Thermostat 4th generation can create wiring, voltage, hot-water, protocol, account, warranty and installation problems. It should not be treated as a drop-in European replacement.
Can you still buy a Nest thermostat in Europe?
There are three different sources of possible stock:

- Google Store: As of August 18, 2026, Google’s regional availability page lists Nest Thermostat E in Belgium, France, Ireland, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain and the United Kingdom. It does not list the European 3rd-generation Learning Thermostat as a current Google Store product. Check Google’s country availability page before buying.
- Retailers: Independent retailers may hold old inventory, returned products or marketplace stock. A listing does not prove that the unit is current, complete or supported in your country.
- Used or refurbished sellers: These may offer lower prices but introduce risks involving the exact regional model, missing Heat Link, previous account association, worn hardware and warranty coverage.
Before buying, confirm the exact model and regional version, whether the Heat Link is included, whether the unit is new or previously installed, the return period, local warranty coverage and compatibility with your boiler and hot-water system. Also confirm that the product can still be added to the current Google Home or Nest app.

Should existing owners replace their thermostat now?
Use this practical guide:
- You have a 1st- or 2nd-generation Learning Thermostat: Replacement planning is justified because app, cloud, assistant, notification and security features have already ended.
- You have a European 3rd-generation Learning Thermostat or Thermostat E that works normally: There is no evidence of an immediate automatic shutdown. You can continue using it, but record the installation and assess replacement options before the device fails.
- You are buying a new or replacement unit: Confirm the regional model and heating compatibility before purchase.
- You have multiple zones, a heat pump, OpenTherm, underfloor heating or separate hot-water control: Have a qualified heating installer verify the control architecture.
A replacement is more urgent if heating is mission-critical, the device is already unreliable, remote control is essential or compatible spare parts are becoming difficult to find.
What to do before replacing or troubleshooting
- Identify the exact thermostat generation using Google’s model guide.
- Record the Heat Link model and take photographs of the thermostat, base, Heat Link, boiler connections and installer labels.
- Write down schedules, temperature settings and hot-water arrangements.
- Test both remote control and local control at the thermostat.
- Ask an installer whether the system uses on/off relay control, OpenTherm, a proprietary bus, low voltage, mains voltage, zone valves or another arrangement.
- Do not remove a working thermostat just to test an uncertain replacement.
- If buying used, require a clear return option and confirm that the Heat Link and mounting hardware are included.
- Do not inspect or alter mains-voltage wiring yourself.
European alternatives
The right alternative depends on the heating system, not simply on which app looks most familiar.

- Home/Away Assist automatically adjusts itself to an Eco Temperature after you leave, so you don’t heat or cool an empty home; remote control lets you change the temperature from anywhere on your phone, laptop, or tablet[1]
- With Energy History, just check your phone to see how much energy you used and why, or use Quick View on the display to reach Energy History, settings, or your schedule; the Nest Leaf appears when you choose a temperature that saves energy
- Smart thermostat with HVAC monitoring, which looks out for your heating and cooling systems; sends an alert if something doesn’t seem right, along with helpful reminders to make maintenance easier[2]
- The Nest Learning Thermostat works with the Nest Temperature Sensor (sold separately) to help make sure a certain room is the exact temperature you want it to be
| Option | Potential fit | Check first |
|---|---|---|
| Keep the existing Nest | No rewiring or learning curve | Future replacement parts and cloud dependence |
| Remaining European Nest stock | Preserves the Nest and Heat Link ecosystem | Regional model, age, inflated reseller pricing and warranty |
| tado° | European-focused boiler, room and radiator control | Boiler wiring, country support and subscription-dependent features; see the official shop. |
| Drayton Wiser | Relevant particularly to UK heating installations and multi-room control | Supported market and system components; see Drayton Wiser. |
| Netatmo Smart Thermostat | Potential option for straightforward boiler control | OpenTherm, hot-water and multi-zone needs; see Netatmo’s product information. |
| Resideo evohome | More suitable for larger homes and multiple radiator zones | Higher cost, system complexity and professional installation; see Resideo’s evohome page. |
| Conventional programmable thermostat | Simple, local and less cloud-dependent | Reduced remote and smart-home functionality |
These are categories to investigate, not universal recommendations. A thermostat can be compatible with a boiler family yet unsuitable for a particular wiring method, hot-water configuration or zone arrangement.
Questions to ask before buying
- Is this the European version, and which countries is it supported in?
- Does it include the required Heat Link, hub, receiver or mounting hardware?
- Will it control my exact boiler or heat pump using the required protocol?
- Does it support domestic hot water and every heating zone I need?
- Is OpenTherm or another modulation standard required?
- Will installation involve mains voltage?
- Does it require a subscription for features I consider essential?
- How long is the warranty in my country, and who handles repairs?
- Can I return it if an installer finds the system incompatible?
- What happens if the manufacturer’s cloud service is discontinued?
The UK is not identical to the EU, and European availability does not automatically include Switzerland, Norway or every other European market. Check country-specific product pages, local warranty terms and installer availability.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThe wider lesson: cloud support is part of the product
The older Nest shutdown illustrates an important ownership risk. A connected thermostat has at least three separate lifecycles: the physical heating controls, the mobile and cloud services, and security and third-party integrations. The heating relay may continue operating after the app disappears, but remote access, notifications and automation may not.
When comparing a replacement, assess not only boiler compatibility but also local controls, offline operation, update policy, subscription requirements, interoperability such as Matter where relevant, and the availability of replacement receivers or hubs.
Bottom line
Google has withdrawn from launching new Nest thermostat hardware for Europe and is allowing remaining European stock to sell through. It has not automatically disabled every European Nest. The immediate service cutoff affected 1st- and 2nd-generation Learning Thermostats on October 25, 2025; newer European models were not covered by that shutdown.
If your Nest still works, identify its model and document the installation. If it is a 1st- or 2nd-generation unit, or if you depend on remote and cloud features, start planning a replacement. Choose based on your boiler, wiring, hot water, heat pump and zones—not simply on the Nest name or a tempting imported listing.
