On October 1, 2025, Google renamed Nest Aware (2nd generation) subscriptions purchased directly from Google as Google Home Premium. Existing subscribers were moved automatically, while first-generation and partner-provided Nest Aware plans kept their original name.
The rebrand also introduced a paid layer of Gemini-powered features for compatible cameras, doorbells, speakers, displays, and automations.

What changed on October 1, 2025?
Google-billed Nest Aware 2nd generation became Google Home Premium. Google says existing subscribers did not need to migrate manually or take action unless they wanted to change plans. The service still provides core security features such as video history and intelligent alerts, but Google now positions it as a broader Google Home and Gemini subscription.
The change does not mean that the Nest Aware name disappeared everywhere. Google’s support documentation distinguishes between several types of subscriptions.
| Subscription or customer type | What happens |
|---|---|
| Nest Aware 2nd generation bought directly from Google | Renamed Google Home Premium |
| Nest Aware 1st generation | Remains Nest Aware with its existing features |
| Nest Aware supplied through ADT, AT&T, Tata Sky, or another partner | Retains the Nest Aware name under the partner arrangement |
| Google AI Pro subscriber | Google Home Premium Standard is included |
| Google AI Ultra subscriber | Google Home Premium Advanced is included |
Google Home Premium Standard vs. Advanced
Google announced two primary Google Home Premium tiers. The prices below are from Google’s October 1, 2025 U.S. announcement; taxes, country, billing channel, and later price changes may affect what you see.
| Plan | Published price | Main capabilities |
|---|---|---|
| Standard | $10 per month or $100 per year | Up to 30 days of video history, intelligent camera alerts, Gemini Live, Ask Home, and compatible Gemini for Home features |
| Advanced | $20 per month or $200 per year | Up to 60 days of event history, up to 10 days of continuous recording where supported, AI event descriptions, Home Brief, searchable camera history, and additional Gemini camera capabilities |
These are not universal guarantees for every Nest product. Google says availability depends on the plan, device, home region, language, account configuration, and rollout status. Continuous recording in particular requires a compatible device and supported setup.
What Gemini adds to Google Home
“Gemini” covers several different features rather than one single upgrade.
Gemini for Home
Google describes Gemini for Home as a more capable voice assistant with improved natural-language understanding and reasoning. Google has also described free and paid Gemini for Home experiences, with the exact features depending on the device, region, and rollout.
Gemini Live
Gemini Live enables more conversational, back-and-forth interaction without relying on the traditional hotword for every exchange. Google announced it as part of the Standard plan, although device support and availability can vary.
Ask Home
Ask Home lets users describe what they want in ordinary language and receive help interacting with their smart-home system or creating and modifying automations. It is a Premium feature, not a promise that every older Google Home device supports every automation request.

Home Brief summarizes relevant activity around the home, such as events that occurred while the household was away. It is listed as an Advanced camera feature and may not appear on every device or account.

What happens to existing Nest Aware subscribers?
If you bought Nest Aware 2nd generation directly from Google, Google says your subscription was automatically transitioned to Google Home Premium. You do not need to create a new subscription merely because the name changed.
Automatic migration does not mean every new Gemini feature will appear on every existing camera. Feature access remains dependent on the device, plan, region, language, and rollout. You should also check whether your subscription is billed by Google or by a security partner before changing anything.

Do Google AI Pro and Ultra include Home Premium?
Yes. Google says Google AI Pro includes Home Premium Standard, while Google AI Ultra includes Home Premium Advanced. Google AI Pro subscribers can upgrade to Advanced for an additional $10 per month, according to the launch announcement.
That benefit is only economical if you already want the broader Google One plan. Do not describe Premium as “free” if you are buying a more expensive AI bundle solely to obtain camera history or smart-home features. Compare the total bundle cost with the standalone Home Premium price shown for your country and account.
Who should choose Standard?
Standard is the more reasonable option for households that want core cloud video history, intelligent alerts, conversational Gemini features, and automation assistance without paying for the highest camera tier.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIt may suit a household with one or several cameras that does not need continuous recording, long event retention, or natural-language searches across extensive camera history. It does not include every Advanced camera capability.
Who should choose Advanced?
Advanced is aimed at users who specifically value:
- Longer event-history retention, up to 60 days where supported.
- Up to 10 days of continuous recording on applicable devices.
- AI-generated descriptions of camera events.
- Home Brief activity summaries.
- Natural-language searches through supported camera history.
- More advanced Gemini camera features.
It is most defensible for households with multiple cameras, frequent alerts, or a real need to investigate events that may not be captured in a shorter history window. It is harder to justify for a single camera that is rarely reviewed.
Compatibility and rollout limitations
Before upgrading, check the actual devices attached to your Google Home account. Google lists a Google account, internet access, the Google Home app, and residence in a supported country among the basic requirements. Compatible products can include Nest cameras, doorbells, Google speakers and displays, and supported partner devices.

“My subscription still says Nest Aware.”
You may have a first-generation plan, a partner-billed plan, or the wrong Google account open. ADT, AT&T, Tata Sky, and other partner arrangements can retain the Nest Aware branding. Check the billing source and subscription details rather than assuming the migration failed.
“I was moved to Premium, but I cannot see Gemini features.”
Check whether the feature belongs to Advanced, whether the device is compatible, and whether it has rolled out in your region and language. Also confirm that the camera or speaker is linked to the same Google account and home where the subscription is active.
“I want 24/7 recording.”
Advanced lists up to 10 days of continuous recording, but Google qualifies this by device and supported configuration. Do not purchase the plan assuming that every Nest camera or doorbell supports continuous recording.

Privacy and cloud-AI trade-offs
AI-generated camera descriptions, searchable footage, alerts, and home summaries can make a security system easier to review, but they also make cloud-processed household data more central to the experience. The feature descriptions alone do not establish Google’s current retention, data-processing, or model-training terms. Review Google’s current privacy and subscription terms if those issues affect your decision.
Alternatives to Google Home Premium
The best alternative depends largely on the hardware and ecosystem you already use:
- Ring Protect: A natural option for Ring doorbell and camera owners. See Ring’s official plan information.
- Arlo Secure: Relevant to households already using Arlo cameras and wanting Arlo’s cloud-recording and security features. See Arlo Secure.
- Apple Home with iCloud+: Worth considering for Apple-centric households with compatible HomeKit Secure Video cameras. Compatibility is the key limitation; see Apple’s iCloud information.
- Professionally monitored security: ADT and similar systems are a better fit when dispatch, installation, and monitored alarms matter more than a camera-cloud subscription alone.
- Local-storage cameras: These can reduce dependence on cloud services, but usually require more setup, storage hardware, maintenance, and technical knowledge.
Should you upgrade?
Stay with your current service if it already provides the history and alerts you need, particularly if you have first-generation or partner-provided Nest Aware. Choose Standard if you want the lower-cost Gemini and smart-home layer plus core video history. Consider Advanced only when longer history, continuous recording on supported hardware, camera search, event descriptions, or Home Brief solve a genuine problem.
Before paying, verify three things: which generation of Nest Aware you have, who bills you, and whether your cameras support the features you want.
Bottom line
Google did not universally “kill” Nest Aware. It renamed Google-billed second-generation Nest Aware as Google Home Premium on October 1, 2025, then used the new branding to package Gemini-powered voice, automation, and camera features. First-generation and partner-billed Nest Aware plans remain under the Nest Aware name. For most existing subscribers, the immediate change is a new label—not a required migration—but the value of upgrading depends on your devices, region, video-history needs, and whether Google AI Pro or Ultra already includes Premium.
