Verdict: The roughly $99 Amazon promotion referred to the standard Google Nest Thermostat, not Google’s newest Nest Learning Thermostat (4th gen). Reports put the standard model at $89.99 in an early Black Friday promotion on November 2, 2025, and at $99.99 in a June 2024 sale. Those are historical prices, not a confirmed live offer on September 28, 2026. Check the exact Amazon listing, seller, color, coupon requirements and checkout total before ordering.
Which Nest thermostat was discounted?
The deal was for the Google Nest Thermostat, the simpler 2020 model with a historical $129.99 U.S. list price. Early Black Friday coverage reported $89.99 on November 2, 2025 (9to5Google); another promotion reported $99.99 in June 2024 (9to5Google).

At $99.99, the reduction from $129.99 is $30, or about 23%. At $89.99, it is $40, or about 31%. Neither figure establishes a lowest-ever price, and Amazon prices can vary by color, inventory, seller, membership and coupons. A deal listing identified a Snow model at $89.99 (Slickdeals), but the exact listing, condition, shipping and return terms must be checked at checkout.

It is not the newest Nest thermostat
Google’s newest model is the Nest Learning Thermostat (4th gen), launched in the U.S. at $279.99 (Google Store). Calling the discounted standard model “the newest Nest Thermostat” confuses two materially different products.

What the $99-class thermostat does
- Controls temperature and schedules from the Google Home app.
- Offers Eco and Savings Finder features intended to reduce unnecessary heating and cooling.
- Can be controlled by Amazon Alexa after setup in Google Home and enabling the Google Nest skill (Google support). Alexa does not replace Google Home for installation or every advanced setting.
- Uses a mirrored-glass display and is designed as Google’s lower-cost Nest option.
Check HVAC compatibility before buying
Google says Nest thermostats generally work with many 24-volt gas, oil and electric systems, including conventional forced-air, heat-pump and radiant systems. The standard model is described as covering approximately 85% of systems, not all systems (Google compatibility guidance).
- Identify the system. Confirm whether it is a conventional, heat-pump, radiant, zoned or proprietary system.
- Document the wiring. Turn off HVAC power and photograph the terminals; wire colors alone do not prove compatibility.
- Run Google’s compatibility checker. Enter the existing terminals and system details using Google’s instructions.
- Plan for power. Heat-only, cool-only, some heat-pump and some zoned installations may need a C wire or Nest Power Connector. A thermostat can power on yet reboot or disconnect if the system cannot supply stable power (technical specifications).
- Get professional help when needed. Use an HVAC professional for proprietary controls, uncertain wiring, multi-stage equipment or accessory terminals.
Do not assume the Nest Power Connector makes an incompatible system compatible. Google’s checker is the appropriate first test.

What to verify on Amazon
- Exact product name: Google Nest Thermostat, not Nest Learning Thermostat (4th gen).
- Color and condition: new versus refurbished or open-box.
- Seller identity, shipping charges, return window and warranty.
- Whether the displayed price requires Prime, a coupon checkbox or a code.
- Whether installation hardware is included and whether tax changes the final total.
Because the documented promotions are from 2024 and 2025, treat any “Black Friday” headline as historical unless the live listing is rechecked on the publication date.
Which model makes sense for your home?
Choose the standard Nest Thermostat when
- Google’s compatibility checker approves a straightforward HVAC system.
- You want inexpensive app control and scheduling.
- You do not need room-to-room temperature sensors.
- You are comfortable using Google Home and can provide a C wire or Nest Power Connector if required.
Pay more for the Learning Thermostat (4th gen) when
- You specifically want Google’s newest thermostat.
- Your home has humidification, dehumidification, ventilation, heat-pump or other more complex controls.
- Automatic learning, room sensing and Adaptive Eco matter more than the lowest purchase price.
- Matter support and broader ecosystem control are priorities.
Consider another brand when
- Your HVAC system is proprietary or fails Google’s compatibility check.
- You primarily use Apple Home and do not want Google Home dependence.
- You need extensive local control or manufacturer-specific accessory support.
Important context for owners of older Nest models
Google ended app and cloud support for first- and second-generation Nest Learning Thermostats on October 25, 2025. Local adjustments remain possible, but remote app control, notifications, third-party assistants and some connected features stop working (Google support notice). The standard $99-class thermostat is not automatically the right replacement for every affected installation; eligible users were offered the fourth-generation model for $149.99 in the U.S., subject to Google’s promotional terms.
