Google’s latest wired Nest lineup includes the Nest Cam Indoor (3rd gen), Nest Cam Outdoor (2nd gen), and Nest Doorbell (3rd gen). Announced on October 1, 2025, all three add 2K HDR video and are designed for Gemini-powered alerts, camera-history search, and activity summaries. The catch is that features vary by camera, country, software version, and Google Home Premium subscription.
The short version
This is not a wholesale replacement of every Nest Cam. Google announced three new wired products:

- Nest Cam Indoor (3rd gen) for indoor monitoring
- Nest Cam Outdoor (2nd gen) for wired outdoor monitoring
- Nest Doorbell (3rd gen) for wired entrance and package monitoring
Google says they provide its highest Nest camera resolution to date, with 2K HDR video and wider, taller views than previous models. The hardware also supplies more detailed visual data for Gemini features. However, 2K does not guarantee clearer faces at every distance, and Gemini features are not automatically identical across all new and older Nest cameras.
Google’s original product announcement is available in its Nest camera lineup announcement.

The new Nest camera lineup
| Model | Generation | Power | Best suited to | Key update |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Nest Cam Indoor | 3rd gen | Wired | Rooms, workshops, offices, and indoor spaces | 2K HDR video and Gemini camera features |
| Nest Cam Outdoor | 2nd gen | Wired | Driveways, yards, entrances, and outdoor areas | 2K HDR video and Gemini camera features |
| Nest Doorbell | 3rd gen | Wired | Front doors and package monitoring | 2K HDR video and Gemini camera features |
Google describes the lineup as having its widest and tallest Nest camera views so far. Exact field-of-view measurements should be checked on the individual product page for the model and market being considered; the announcement does not provide one complete model-by-model specification table.
What 2K changes in practice
Higher resolution can preserve more detail when you digitally crop into a recording. In suitable lighting, it may make people, packages, vehicles, and pets easier to distinguish. It can also provide richer visual input for computer-vision and multimodal AI features.
But 2K cannot recover detail that the camera never captured. Recognition still depends on distance, lens angle, lighting, motion blur, obstructions, compression, and whether the subject is actually inside the frame. A distant face under poor lighting may remain unidentifiable even in 2K.
Higher-resolution video can also require more bandwidth and potentially more cloud storage. If a camera is installed at the edge of a property, in a construction office, or near an outdoor work area, check Wi-Fi coverage at the exact mounting position rather than assuming the indoor network will be sufficient.

Google says DXOMARK ranked the three products first in their respective classes for image quality. That is a claim from Google about DXOMARK’s assessment, not a universal independent verdict that these cameras outperform every competing model in every condition.
What Gemini adds to Nest cameras
More descriptive alerts
Traditional alerts might simply say that motion was detected. Gemini can provide richer descriptions of activity, such as identifying a dog jumping from a playpen or describing the type of subject involved.

They can be incomplete, delayed, or wrong when scenes are dark, blocked, unusual, or ambiguous. Activity zones and notification controls remain important even with AI.
Ask Home and camera-history search
Google’s Ask Home feature lets users ask natural-language questions about recorded activity instead of manually scrubbing through a timeline. For example, a user might ask whether a package arrived or what happened to an object.

- If your Wi-Fi goes down or there’s a power outage, Nest Cam will store up to an hour of recorded events so you can see what you missed[4]. Nest Cam Outdoor comes with a wall plate that can be mounted on your brick wall.
- Put Nest Cam anywhere, outside or in; it’s battery powered, so you don’t need to set it up near an outlet, and the magnetic mount makes installation effortless
- For continuous power and 24/7 video recording with Nest Aware Plus, add a weatherproof power cable or indoor stand with power cable (both sold separately)
This is not a perfect record of everything the camera saw. The event must have been captured, retained, indexed, and recognized in a way that matches the question. Camera-history search may also require Google Home Premium.
Home Brief and event previews
Home Brief summarizes activity over a period so users can catch up without reviewing every clip. Google has also described zoomed-in or animated previews focused on people, packages, vehicles, or pets, along with richer event descriptions and improved camera-history controls.

Which cameras get which Gemini features?
| Device group | What can be said safely | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| New 2K wired cameras and doorbell | Designed for the new Gemini camera experience, including richer descriptions and camera-history features where available | Feature access depends on region, language, app version, rollout, and subscription |
| Earlier-generation Nest cameras in Google Home | Some older cameras may receive Gemini-enhanced descriptions or interface improvements | They do not necessarily receive the complete feature set of the new 2K models |
| Users without Premium | Live viewing and some basic camera functionality may remain available | Advanced AI features can be restricted by device and plan |
| Google Home Premium subscribers | May receive advanced features such as camera-history search, richer descriptions, summaries, or Gemini Live in applicable contexts | Exact availability varies by product, account, region, and current Google terms |
It would be misleading to say either that all Nest Cams get Gemini or that only the new 2K models get Gemini. Google has extended some Gemini-related improvements to older cameras, but the complete experience is not universal. Google’s camera-experience update describes several improvements for earlier-generation cameras while retaining device and subscription qualifications.

Do you need Google Home Premium?
Google Home Premium is the subscription layer for advanced whole-home AI features. Google has said that more advanced functions—including camera-history search and Gemini Live in relevant contexts—require a qualifying Premium subscription. Google also says Premium is included with Google AI Pro and Ultra subscriptions where those benefits are available.
The supplied announcement materials do not establish a reliable current Premium price, so the cost should be checked on Google’s current subscription page before purchase. Do not assume that every Gemini feature is free, or that every feature requires Premium.

Availability and setup requirements
In an April 29, 2026 support announcement, Google said the new-camera Gemini rollout initially covered the United States, Canada, United Kingdom, Ireland, and Australia. It also cited Google Home app version 4.0 or later and warned that updates could take several days to reach eligible subscribers. Google planned availability in other supported regions for early 2026, but current access still depends on country, language, account, and rollout status.
Before installation, confirm:
- The camera is compatible with your Google Home account and region.
- The Google Home app is updated to the required version.
- The camera has current firmware.
- Wi-Fi reaches the installation point reliably.
- A suitable wired power route and weather-protected connection are available outdoors.
- Your Google Home Premium plan, if needed, supports the feature you want.
- Camera, microphone, familiar-face, activity-zone, and household-sharing settings are configured intentionally.
Privacy, accuracy, and outages
These cameras depend on Google accounts, Wi-Fi, and cloud services for remote access and Gemini functionality. If the internet connection or relevant Google service is unavailable, remote viewing and AI features may be unavailable or degraded. The new cameras should not be treated as offline, local-only security systems.

Review who has access to the Google Home household, particularly if cameras cover a home office, workshop, jobsite entrance, or storage area. Familiar-face detection and other person classifications can be sensitive, and AI-generated descriptions should be treated as probabilistic interpretations rather than evidence.
Also check retention settings. Camera-history search can make more household activity easier to retrieve, which is convenient but increases the importance of account security, sharing controls, and knowing how long footage remains available.
Should you buy a new Nest Cam?
Buy the new 2K models if:
- You already use Google Home.
- You want wired indoor or outdoor coverage.
- Better framing and digital-crop detail matter.
- You value AI-assisted alerts, summaries, or searchable history.
- Your installation has reliable Wi-Fi and suitable power.
- You accept cloud dependence and possible subscription costs.
Keep an existing Nest Cam if:
- It already covers the area adequately.
- You mainly need live view and basic motion alerts.
- You do not need 2K detail or AI search.
- Replacing mounts, wiring, or working equipment is not worthwhile.
- Your current model supports the particular Gemini feature you want.
Consider another platform if:
- Local storage or offline operation is essential.
- You want to avoid recurring cloud fees.
- You need battery or solar power.
- You want broader compatibility outside Google Home.
- You require more granular recording, networking, or automation controls.
When comparing Google with Ring, Eufy, Wyze, Blink, or another system, compare more than resolution: night image quality, field of view, mounting, retention, local storage, detection types, AI search, subscription gates, privacy controls, ecosystem compatibility, and performance during internet outages.
Bottom line
Google’s new lineup is most compelling for Google Home households that want wired cameras with higher-resolution video and AI-assisted review. The upgrade is less compelling for buyers who need battery power, local recording, offline resilience, or a subscription-free system. Existing Nest owners should first check whether their current camera already supports the specific Gemini feature they want before replacing otherwise suitable hardware.
