But the “new widget” claim needs qualification: Google’s official release notes describe a more responsive existing Google Home widget, not a confirmed standalone Gemini widget.

What is actually changing in Google Home?
Gemini for Home is a collection of features rather than one single upgrade. Google says it is intended to replace Google Assistant on compatible speakers and displays, although the exact capabilities vary by device and subscription.
- Continued Conversation: Ask follow-up questions without repeating the wake phrase.
- Multi-step commands: Combine supported smart-home, list, calendar, alarm, reminder, and media actions in one request.
- Camera intelligence: Search camera history and ask natural-language questions about live or recorded footage.
- Personalized camera answers: Saved information in Ask Home, such as a pet’s name, can make responses more specific.
- Home Brief: Receive a summary of useful information about your home.
- Natural-language automations: Describe what you want an automation to do instead of building every rule manually.
- Gemini Live: Have a more open-ended voice interaction on compatible speakers and displays, subject to plan restrictions.
- Smarter displays: Google is refreshing visual answer cards for subjects such as weather and general knowledge.
- Improved media and organization controls: Gemini can handle more natural interactions with playlists, lists, calendars, alarms, reminders, and news.
Google’s May 5, 2026 release notes attribute several of these improvements to Gemini 3.1, including better handling of complex requests. Google’s examples include adding items to one list while checking off items on another, creating an all-day calendar event, moving an event, and setting a recurring reminder. Those are supported examples—not a promise that every arbitrary chain of actions will work.

Google’s release notes and its Gemini for Home support documentation should be treated as the definitive references because features continue to roll out gradually.
The widget is not necessarily a new Gemini widget
The headline’s widget language is easy to overread. There are three separate ideas:
- The existing Google Home widget: A phone home-screen shortcut for quick smart-home controls.
- A widget performance update: Google says the widget has become faster or more responsive.
- A standalone Gemini widget: No official source in the current documentation confirms that Google launched a separate Gemini-powered widget with a new design or AI-specific controls.
In practical terms, the widget remains primarily a control surface, not a replacement for Gemini conversations. Tapping a control may open the Google Home app or a relevant device view. Its controls and behavior can also differ between Android and iOS.

Google’s release notes do not provide a complete, universal list of widget controls or a platform-by-platform setup guide. The phrase “new widget” may refer to faster loading, an updated widget experience, or shorthand for the wider Google Home update. It should not be treated as confirmation of a brand-new Gemini home-screen assistant.
Compatible Google Home and Nest devices
Google’s current compatibility page lists these first-party speakers and displays for the Gemini for Home voice assistant:
- Google Home Speaker (2026)
- Google Nest Hub, second generation
- Google Nest Audio
- Google Nest Mini, second generation
- Google Nest Hub Max
- Google Nest Hub, first generation
- Google Home Mini, first generation
The listed minimum firmware requirements are:
- Speakers: Cast firmware 3.76 or higher
- Displays: Fuchsia firmware 28 or higher
Older supported speakers and displays can receive most Gemini for Home features but do not support Gemini Live, according to Google’s compatibility information. Google also broadly describes Gemini for Home voice-assistant support as intended for Google Home and Nest speakers and displays released since 2016. That broad statement does not mean every model receives every feature.
Compatibility is feature-specific. A device may support the Gemini voice assistant but not Gemini Live, camera intelligence, or refreshed visual answers. Check the current device and feature requirements before buying hardware solely for one capability.

What requires Google Home Premium?
Not every Gemini for Home improvement requires a subscription. Google separates the general voice-assistant rollout from features that require the Advanced plan of Google Home Premium.
Google says the Advanced plan is required for:
- Gemini Live on compatible speakers and displays
- Some advanced camera intelligence, including certain event-description and pet-memory functions
Google Home Premium is the newer Google Home subscription positioned as the successor or rebranding of Nest Aware for the updated experience. Camera history, familiar-face features, event descriptions, automations, and Gemini capabilities can vary by plan and device.
The available official material does not establish a reliable current U.S. price here, so check the live Google Home Premium plan page before subscribing. Do not assume that basic Gemini voice control or widget access requires Premium.
Continued Conversation: useful, but not unlimited
Continued Conversation lets you ask follow-up questions without repeating “Hey Google” or another wake phrase. Google’s documented setup path is:

Google says the feature is available globally across supported languages and regions, subject to the relevant account and device rollout. It may still respond to background speech or false activations, although Google says filtering has improved. You can say “Stop” or “No thanks” to end a continued conversation.
It is best understood as a more natural interaction layer—not a guarantee of an open-ended conversation for every smart-home operation. Voice verification and confirmation behavior can vary by action and account.

Camera search and personalization
Gemini can interpret camera events using natural language instead of relying only on fixed categories. You might ask what happened at a particular time, whether a person or pet appeared, or what is happening in a live camera view.
Google says Ask Home can store information such as a pet’s name and type, allowing later camera responses to be more personalized. That does not mean the system provides guaranteed human-level identification. Camera descriptions are AI-generated interpretations and can misidentify people, pets, objects, or events.
Camera interpretation is also a cloud-connected service. Consider what identities and descriptions you save, who can access the household account, and whether the feature is available for your camera, region, plan, and local legal environment. For security-sensitive decisions, open the original video rather than relying on a summary.
Some of the more advanced camera capabilities require Google Home Premium Advanced. Google’s camera and Gemini capability information describes the broader feature direction.
Natural-language automations are different from one-time commands
Gemini’s automation features are potentially more important than a faster widget, but the concepts should not be confused:
- One-time control: “Turn off the kitchen lights.”
- Automation creation: Ask Gemini to create a rule that will run later.
- Automation trigger: A time, device state, presence event, or other condition starts the rule.
- Camera-triggered automation: A recognized camera event may be used as a trigger where supported.
Google is expanding natural-language automation creation and its developer platform, but supported devices, triggers, and conditions vary. Review an automation before enabling it, particularly when it affects locks, alarms, heating, cameras, or other safety-sensitive equipment. More information is available through the Google Home developer platform.
Rollout timeline and availability
Gemini for Home is an early-access, staged rollout—not a switch that appears simultaneously for every Google Home owner.
- October 28, 2025: Early access began for select existing U.S. users.
- March 17, 2026: Google documented expansion to Canada and Canadian French support.
- June 2, 2026: Google documented expansion to Germany and additional Home Brief and camera-search availability.
- June 9, 2026: Google Home app version 4.18 was identified in the release notes for that update.
- July 8, 2026: Google documented refreshed smart-display answer cards and continued-conversation improvements.
These are release-note dates, not guarantees that every eligible user received the feature on that date. Access can depend on country, language, account, device, firmware, subscription, and server-side rollout.

- Update the Google Home app.
- Open the app and tap your profile picture or account initial.
- Open Home settings.
- Look for Early access or an invitation for the Gemini for Home voice assistant.
- If invited, follow the in-app enrollment steps.
- If the feature is missing, check the device firmware and account requirements.
Labels may change as Google moves features from early access to broader availability. Installing the newest app version does not guarantee immediate access because the rollout can remain server-side.
There is also an important migration warning: Google says that after a home switches to the Gemini for Home voice assistant, compatible devices in that home use Gemini rather than Google Assistant, and the normal supported process does not allow the home to switch back to Google Assistant.

The feature does not appear
The account may not have been invited, the country or language may be unsupported, the device or firmware may not qualify, or the feature may still be rolling out. A particular capability may also require Google Home Premium Advanced even when Gemini voice control itself is available.
Gemini works on one device but not another
This is usually a feature-compatibility difference rather than a complete failure. Older Nest devices may support much of Gemini for Home but not Gemini Live, while displays, cameras, and speakers can have different feature sets.
A command opens the app instead of finishing on the speaker
That can be expected for account-sensitive actions, visual camera review, detailed settings, or requests requiring confirmation. Gemini does not eliminate the Google Home app.

The widget shows stale status
Google’s responsiveness update does not promise real-time status under every network condition. The widget depends on the phone’s connection, Wi-Fi, internet service, Google’s cloud services, device availability, account permissions, and app synchronization.
Gemini gives an incorrect camera answer
Treat the answer as assistance, not proof. Open the original footage or inspect the device directly before making a security-sensitive decision.
Should you switch now?
Try Gemini now if you value natural-language control, conversational follow-ups, camera-history searches, or more flexible automations and are comfortable with a staged rollout.

Wait if predictable commands, avoiding a subscription, minimizing cloud processing, or retaining the ability to return to Google Assistant matters more. The migration may not be reversible through Google’s normal supported process.
Buy new hardware only when it solves a specific limitation. Existing compatible speakers and displays may receive many of the non-Live features. Consider a newer device if you specifically need a capability unavailable on your current model, such as Gemini Live or a display-based experience.
For a broader ecosystem decision, Amazon Alexa offers wide third-party hardware support; Apple Home and Siri suit Apple-focused households; Samsung SmartThings and Bixby fit Samsung-heavy homes; and Home Assistant offers extensive customization and local-processing options at the cost of greater setup complexity. Matter-compatible devices can also reduce dependence on one assistant, although Matter support does not automatically provide Gemini features.
Bottom line
The meaningful story is Google’s broader transition to Gemini for Home: more conversational control, multi-step requests, camera intelligence, Home Briefs, natural-language automations, and—on eligible hardware and plans—Gemini Live. The widget news is more modest. Google officially confirms improved responsiveness for the existing Google Home widget, but not a separate, newly launched Gemini widget.

Most importantly, remember that switching your home to Gemini may not be reversible and that AI-generated camera interpretations should never be treated as infallible.
