Apple is reportedly exploring a smart doorbell camera with facial recognition and possible smart-lock integration, but it has not announced the product. The report originated with Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman in December 2024. As of August 18, 2026, Apple has published no official product page, confirmed specification sheet, price, or firm release date.
What Apple is reportedly developing
According to Bloomberg reporting summarized by MacRumors, Apple was exploring a video doorbell similar in concept to Ring or Nest products. The reported device could recognize residents and communicate wirelessly with a compatible smart deadbolt.

The earliest reported launch window was 2026, but that means “2026 at the earliest”—not that Apple has committed to releasing it during 2026. There is no confirmed product name, design, price, country availability, power arrangement, weather-resistance rating, camera resolution, or list of compatible locks.
“Face ID” may not mean iPhone Face ID hardware
Reports describe a facial-recognition feature comparable in concept to Face ID. That does not confirm the use of the iPhone’s TrueDepth camera system, infrared dot projection, Secure Enclave architecture, or Apple’s standard Face ID security thresholds.

- A wired video doorbell that works exclusively with Apple HomeKit, featuring head-to-toe Logitech TrueView HD video, face recognition, color night vision, 2-way audio, and more. Driver Type: Apple HomeKit Connectivity protocols: Wi-Fi. Power source type: battery powered
- Replaces your existing wired doorbell and works with your existing indoor doorbell. Full pre-purchase home compatibility check on Logitz website before
- Installation requires dealing with electrical wiring, and may also require the use of power tools and electrical test equipment.
- Designed to support Apple HomeKit Secure Video so you get end-to-end encryption, facial recognition, packet detection, full notifications, and custom activity zones. Requires iCloud+ plan and home hub device.
- It features best-in-class Logitech TrueView video with 160° field of view, head-to-toe HD video, HDR, and color night vision up to 6 feet to capture every last detail.
Apple already supports familiar-person recognition in Home. With a compatible camera or doorbell, the system can identify familiar visitors using faces from the Photos library or images of recent visitors. It can send a notification such as “Alex may be at the door,” but that is not the same as authenticating Alex and unlocking a door.
Recognition, authorization, and unlocking are different
- Recognition: The camera estimates who appears to be present.
- Authorization: The system determines whether that person is allowed to enter.
- Automatic unlocking: A compatible lock opens without a separate key, code, tap, or approval.
Apple’s existing HomeKit facial-recognition documentation supports the first use case. The second and third are inferred from the rumor and remain unconfirmed. A doorbell would also need a compatible smart lock; the camera alone cannot provide physical entry.
How it could fit into Apple Home
If Apple releases the device, it could become a first-party Apple Home accessory combining exterior video, facial recognition, smart-home automation, and access control. It might also connect with Siri, Apple TV, HomePod, HomeKit Secure Video, iCloud+, and Home Key-compatible locks. None of those features has been confirmed for this doorbell.

Apple’s current platform provides a useful indication of the likely requirements. Compatible cameras and doorbells can use HomeKit Secure Video, while a home hub is required for remote Home control and Secure Video operation. Apple identifies Apple TV 4K and HomePod devices as home-hub options; exact requirements for a future Apple doorbell are unknown.
Apple says HomeKit Secure Video footage is analyzed privately and encrypted through a home hub. Recorded video does not count against iCloud storage limits, although recording requires iCloud+. Current limits are one camera with the 50GB plan, up to five cameras with the 200GB plan, and unlimited cameras with 2TB and higher plans, according to Apple’s iCloud guide.
Timeline and current status
| Date | What was reported |
|---|---|
| December 22, 2024 | Bloomberg reporting described an early-stage Apple doorbell and lock system using facial recognition. |
| August 13, 2025 | Further reporting described Apple’s broader work on Ring-like home-security cameras. |
| March 23, 2026 | Reports discussed a separate small security sensor or camera, reportedly code-named J450. |
| July 28, 2026 | Bloomberg reported a broader smart-home push centered on a Siri-based home hub, with an Apple TV and refreshed HomePod mini also reportedly in development. |
| August 18, 2026 | No official Apple announcement, retail listing, public specification sheet, or confirmed release date for the Face ID-style doorbell. |
The rumored doorbell and the reported J450 device should not be treated as the same product. J450 has been described as a battery-powered security and automation camera or sensor with facial recognition and infrared sensing. Both may belong to Apple’s wider home strategy, but their relationship has not been confirmed. See the reporting from August 2025 and March 2026.

The privacy and security questions
Apple’s privacy model could be a major selling point. HomeKit Secure Video is designed around local analysis and end-to-end encrypted storage, and household members can control whether recognized face names are shared. Apple’s platform-security documentation explains the existing approach in more detail at Apple Platform Security.
However, a privacy-focused design would not remove every concern. A front-door camera records delivery workers, visitors, neighbors, and people passing by. Facial recognition can misidentify someone, and automatic entry makes a false positive far more serious than an incorrect notification.
Potential failure conditions include darkness, glare, rain, snow, backlighting, masks, helmets, sunglasses, changed hairstyles, side profiles, multiple people in frame, network outages, a failed home hub, a depleted battery, or a malfunctioning lock. A responsible system would need a reliable fallback such as a physical key, PIN, Home Key, manual approval, or interior release. Apple has not described how its rumored system would handle these situations.

Users should also consider Apple Account security, household access permissions, lock connectivity, face-database sharing, video retention, and local rules concerning recording public areas or identifying visitors.
Should you wait?
Waiting may suit people already invested in iPhone, Apple Watch, HomePod, Apple TV, and Apple Home who prioritize ecosystem integration and privacy and do not urgently need a doorbell. It is a poor fit if you need security coverage now, require published specifications, use Alexa or Google Home, need local storage, rent your property, cannot change your lock or wiring, or require professional monitoring.
Apple users can already assemble much of the expected ecosystem: a HomeKit Secure Video-compatible doorbell, an Apple home hub, iCloud+, and a compatible smart lock or Home Key lock. This provides remote viewing, familiar-person notifications, encrypted video, and automation without waiting. It does not provide Apple-designed doorbell hardware or confirmed automatic facial unlocking.
What to check before buying an alternative
- Whether the exact model supports Apple Home and HomeKit Secure Video.
- Existing doorbell wiring, battery requirements, installation limits, and low-light performance.
- Cloud subscriptions, retention periods, and local-recording options.
- Smart-lock compatibility, including Home Key, Matter, Z-Wave, or proprietary systems.
- Physical-key, PIN, manual-release, and offline-operation fallbacks.
- Face-recognition controls, guest permissions, account security, and privacy settings.
- Local requirements or neighborhood concerns involving cameras and facial recognition.
Do not buy an existing camera because it is “basically Apple’s rumored doorbell.” Compare verified features and current support instead. Apple’s Home accessories directory is a useful starting point, but compatibility with Apple Home does not automatically guarantee HomeKit Secure Video, facial recognition, or smart-lock control.
