Update, September 2026: Google’s Gemini-powered Google Home Speaker is no longer an upcoming spring 2026 product. Google opened preorders on June 17, 2026, and says the speaker reached stores on June 25 at $99.99 in the United States. The device is Google’s first speaker built specifically around Gemini for Home, although compatible older Google Home and Nest devices can also receive parts of the new assistant experience.
Google Home Speaker (2026) at a glance
| Detail | What Google says |
|---|---|
| US price | $99.99 |
| Retail release | June 25, 2026 |
| Original announcement | Teased October 1, 2025 for spring 2026; formally announced June 17, 2026 |
| Assistant | Gemini for Home |
| Battery | None; the speaker must remain plugged in |
| Colors | Hazel, Porcelain, Berry and Jade; Berry and Jade are listed as US-only |
| Premium offer | Six months of Google Home Premium was advertised with the purchase offer, subject to applicable terms |
Google’s original teaser described a $99 speaker in four colors and positioned it as a Gemini-first successor in spirit to the company’s earlier Nest speakers. However, Google calls the product the Google Home Speaker (2026), not “Nest Audio 2” or an officially designated Nest Audio replacement. The June launch announcement is the current reference for its release status.

What happened to the spring 2026 release window?
The timeline changed from a preview to a completed launch:
- October 1, 2025: Google teased the speaker and said it was coming in spring 2026.
- June 17, 2026: Google formally announced the product, opened preorders and confirmed its $99.99 US price.
- June 25, 2026: Google said the speaker reached stores.
As of September 2026, it should be treated as an available product rather than an upcoming release. Actual stock, colors and regional availability can still vary, so buyers outside the United States should check their local Google Store listing.

What Gemini for Home adds
The main reason to consider this speaker is not simply its enclosure or driver. It is Google’s Gemini for Home voice-assistant experience. Google says Gemini makes conversations more natural, handles more complicated questions and can follow multi-step requests more effectively than the older Assistant experience.
More conversational requests
Google describes support for requests that contain several actions, as well as the ability to correct or refine a request during the same conversation. For example, Google demonstrates asking the speaker to turn off every light except a bedside lamp. These are Google’s stated capabilities and examples, not independent performance measurements.
Gemini Live
Gemini Live is designed for an ongoing voice conversation without repeatedly saying “Hey Google.” Google presents it as useful for learning, brainstorming, rehearsing lines and other general-purpose tasks. Availability depends on the device, plan, country, language and rollout status; it is not supported on every older or third-party speaker.
Smarter smart-home control
The speaker can be used to control compatible lights, plugs, thermostats, locks and other devices through Google Home. Gemini may make more natural multi-device instructions easier to express, but it is not a universal controller. Compatibility still depends on whether a product supports Matter or Works with Google Home, as well as the device type, region, account and network configuration.
Camera-history questions
With compatible Nest cameras and the required settings, Google says users can ask about recent camera activity—for example, whether a back gate is open based on available camera footage. This is more than a speaker-only feature: camera model, event descriptions, subscription plan and regional availability all matter. Some related capabilities require Google Home Premium, particularly the Advanced plan.
Which features are free?
Google’s documentation indicates that the core Gemini for Home voice assistant does not require a subscription. The boundary becomes less straightforward for advanced features.
Rank #2
- Whole-Home Smart Audio – Get powerful, room-filling sound in 3 rooms at once or group all three speakers together for seamless multi-room playback. Perfect for homes, apartments, or offices.
- Stereo Pairing & Grouping – Pair two speakers for immersive stereo sound or assign each to different areas (e.g., kitchen, living room, bedroom) for dynamic audio throughout your space.
- Hands-Free Voice Assistant – With Google Assistant built in, control music, get answers, set timers, check the weather, and control smart home devices with simple voice commands.
- Wi-Fi & Bluetooth Connectivity – Stream your favorite music from services like Spotify, YouTube Music, and more via Wi-Fi or Bluetooth. Works with Android, iOS, and Chromecast-enabled apps.
- Smart Home Ready – Nest Audio integrates with thousands of compatible smart home devices – use your voice to dim lights, control thermostats, lock doors, and more.
| Capability | Subscription and availability |
|---|---|
| Core Gemini for Home voice assistant | No subscription is listed for the base assistant, but device, country, language and firmware restrictions apply. |
| Gemini Live | Plan- and device-dependent; Google places advanced access within Google Home Premium availability. |
| Camera-history search and Ask Home | Requires supported Nest cameras and may require the Advanced plan or other enabled camera features. |
| Complex automation creation | Plan-dependent and subject to Google’s current feature table. |
| AI notifications and related Nest intelligence | Google Home Premium, camera and regional restrictions may apply. |
Google’s feature-availability table should take precedence over any general description because access can vary by plan, device, country and language.
Hardware specifications
According to Google’s specifications page, the speaker includes:
- Diameter: 4.2 inches (106.7 mm)
- Height: 3.4 inches (86.4 mm)
- Weight: 0.9 lb (408 g)
- Driver: 58 mm full-range, omnidirectional
- Microphones: three far-field microphones
- Microphone control: physical two-stage microphone-off switch
- Touch controls: three capacitive touch areas
- Wireless connectivity: Wi-Fi 6 on 2.4GHz and 5GHz, plus Bluetooth 5.4
- Smart-home connectivity: Thread 1.3 border-router functionality
- Processor: quad-core A55 at 2.0GHz with an NPU
- Memory and storage: 1GB LPDDR4 and 4GB eMMC
- Power: 30W USB-C PD PPS adapter and a connected 1.5-metre power cable
There is no battery, so this is a mains-powered home speaker rather than a portable device. Google describes the audio as balanced and omnidirectional, but the supplied evidence does not include independent listening tests or measurements. It would be misleading to claim that it sounds better than Nest Audio, HomePod mini or Echo speakers without comparative testing.
Google says the product contains at least 39% recycled product weight and uses 100% plastic-free packaging.
How it fits into a Google smart home
The speaker supports Google Cast and multi-room audio, allowing it to be grouped with compatible Nest speakers, Nest displays and other Google Cast-enabled devices. Google also says up to two Google Home Speakers can be paired with a Google TV Streamer for a home-theater setup. Matter and Thread support can help connect compatible smart-home products, but neither removes the need for compatible hardware and a correctly configured network.

Not necessarily. Google says the complete Gemini for Home voice assistant is available on, or rolling out to, these first-party devices, subject to the required firmware and other restrictions:

Google cites minimum firmware of Cast firmware 3.76 or higher for speakers and Fuchsia firmware 28 or higher for displays. Older products such as the Nest Wifi point, Google Home Max and original Google Home, along with some third-party speakers, may support most Gemini for Home features but not Gemini Live. Check Google’s current compatibility guidance before buying solely for software access.
The migration warning
Opting a household into Gemini for Home is not a trivial toggle. Google says that after a compatible home switches, those devices use Gemini instead of Google Assistant and the household cannot switch back to Google Assistant. Before opting in, check every household device, review routines and automations, and consider whether everyone is comfortable with the changed assistant behavior.
The high-level process is to set up the speaker in the Google Home app, confirm eligibility, opt in when prompted, and then review voice, privacy and subscription settings. Google’s exact app labels can change, so the current on-screen instructions should be followed rather than relying on a fixed menu path.

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Google Home Premium and the six-month offer
Google’s product page advertised six months of Google Home Premium with the speaker and described that promotion as a $60 value. It should not be treated as a permanent entitlement or assumed to apply in every country or to every account. The offer’s terms, timing and eligibility are attached to the purchase and account.
Before accepting the trial, check its end date, the recurring price shown at signup and which functions stop when the plan is cancelled. Google directs customers to the Store for current pricing, and plan features vary by region and device. Camera-owning households may get more value from Premium because camera history, AI notifications and advanced camera intelligence are more relevant to them. A buyer who wants only basic Gemini voice commands may have little reason to continue paying after the trial.

The physical microphone switch is the clearest device-level privacy control: it can turn the microphones off. Voice Match provides account-personalization features, but it is not a substitute for reviewing account, recording and household settings.
Rank #4
- IMMERSIVE 360° SOUND – Enjoy rich, room-filling audio with clear vocals, detailed highs, and deep bass designed to enhance music, podcasts, audiobooks, and more.
- DESIGNED FOR MUSIC AND ENTERTAINMENT – Enjoy your favorite music, podcasts, audiobooks, and more with room-filling sound and impressive audio clarity.
- STEREO PAIRING CAPABILITY – Pair two compatible speakers together for a wider soundstage and enhanced stereo performance throughout your space.
- MODERN DESIGN WITH MULTIPLE COLOR OPTIONS – Features a sleek, contemporary design available in Sage, Porcelain, Berry, and Hazel to complement a variety of home décor styles.
- DESIGNED FOR EVERYDAY ENTERTAINMENT – Ideal for enjoying music, podcasts, radio stations, and other audio content with premium sound quality and simple operation.
Camera-history search deserves particular care. Making recent footage searchable by natural language may be convenient, but it also makes camera data easier to query. It requires compatible Nest cameras and enabled features, and its availability can depend on a paid plan. Readers should review camera retention, event-description and account settings directly in Google Home rather than assuming that every recording or camera model is covered.
Other limitations are straightforward but important:
- Smart-home and streaming functions depend on Wi-Fi.
- Thread benefits require compatible Thread and Matter devices and suitable network configuration.
- Colors and features vary by geography and language.
- The speaker is wired and has no battery.
- Premium capabilities are not the same as the free core assistant.
- Google’s conversational, reasoning and audio claims should be understood as published product claims unless independent testing supports them.
Should you buy the Google Home Speaker?
Buy it if you want the newest Gemini-first hardware
The $99.99 speaker is most compelling for an existing Google Home household that wants dedicated new hardware, Gemini Live where supported, Thread border-router functionality, Cast integration or the option to use two speakers with a Google TV Streamer. It also makes more sense if the six-month Premium promotion includes features you genuinely intend to use.
Keep your existing speaker if the core assistant is enough
Owners of Nest Audio, Nest Mini and several Nest Hub models may receive the core Gemini for Home experience without purchasing anything. If you do not need Gemini Live, advanced automations or camera intelligence, the new speaker may not add enough to justify replacing working hardware.
Wait if migration or subscriptions concern you
Households that depend on familiar Google Assistant behavior should consider the no-return migration policy carefully. Likewise, buyers who want advanced camera or automation features should calculate the ongoing Premium cost rather than treating the included trial as the total cost of ownership.
Choose another ecosystem if your home is elsewhere
Amazon Echo devices are a more natural fit for Alexa households, while Apple’s HomePod mini is aimed at homes centered on Apple devices and Apple Home. Switching ecosystems can involve replacing routines, services and compatible accessories, so the best choice is usually the platform that already controls most of the home.
Bottom line
The Google Home Speaker is best understood as a $99.99 Gemini-first Google Home endpoint, not merely a new version of Nest Audio. Its strongest case is for buyers who want new hardware and the fullest available Gemini experience. Existing Google Home owners should first check whether their current speaker already supports the specific Gemini features they want—and should review the irreversible assistant migration and Premium subscription boundaries before opting in.
