Google Home can now use compatible physical switch and button presses to start automations. Added on February 2, 2026, the feature recognizes single presses, multi-press actions such as double taps, long presses, and long-press releases. It is useful for homeowners planning smart lighting or switch controls—but it does not make every standalone smart button compatible with Google Home.
What Google Home added
Google added physical switch and button events as automation starters. That means a press can begin an automation, such as turning on lights or activating a scene. It does not mean Google has released a new Google-branded programmable button.

Google’s documented examples include “when double tapping the switch,” “when holding down the button on a dimmer switch,” and “when the button is released.” Available event types may include:

Why this matters for a smart-home installation
Google Home previously offered extensive automation actions but lacked a straightforward native way to use a physical programmable button as the “if this” trigger. A 2019 Google Nest Community discussion reflects that earlier limitation.
Homeowners could still connect buttons through manufacturer applications, hubs, webhooks, or Home Assistant. Google’s new support reduces the need for those workarounds when the chosen switch or button exposes the right event.
What a button press can do
Google Home automations use three building blocks:
- Starters: events that begin the automation.
- Conditions: optional requirements checked after the starter.
- Actions: the devices or scenes controlled by the automation.
For example, a compatible switch might be configured as follows:
| Press | Possible action |
|---|---|
| Single press | Turn on an entryway light |
| Double press | Turn off selected downstairs lights |
| Long press | Start a bedtime scene |
| Long-press release | Turn off a fan or cancel a scene |
You can add conditions such as a time window, sunset, presence, or another device state. Google’s official switch example shows a switch starter turning on a light.

- CONTROL LIGHTS WITH A CLICK: A simple touch of the smart button is enough to turn your lights on and off, cycle through scenes, and more. Press and hold to dim or brighten the space
- GET THE BEST LIGHT THROUGHOUT THE DAY: The wireless light switch button uses the Time-based light function by default, giving you the best light for each moment of the day
- CUSTOMIZE IN THE APP: Set the Rooms or Zone your button controls, adjust settings to remote control lights or start an automation, choose scenes you want for each time slot, and more in the Hue app
- START/STOP AUTOMATIONS: Start or stop an automation created in the Automations tab with a simple press on your PHILIPS Hue Switch
- FLEXIBLE, WIRELESS MOUNTING: Use the included adhesive to mount the Hue button around your home — or place it on any magnetic surface.
Button events are starters only. They are not general-purpose conditions that can be evaluated later in an automation. A physical press is also different from an in-app control, a button on a Nest speaker or display, or a simple on/off state change from a conventional wall switch.
How to create a button automation
- Update the Google Home app and the switch or button’s firmware.
- Confirm that the device is added to the correct Google Home and is online.
- Open Google Home and select Automations.
- Create a new automation or edit an existing one.
- Add a device-based starter and select the compatible switch or button.
- Choose the press event offered for that device.
- Add optional conditions.
- Add the lights, plugs, fans, shades, scenes, or other actions required.
- Save the automation and test each press type separately.
Google changes app labels and layouts, so the stable part of the process is the automation editor, not the precise wording of every button. At launch, Google said these starters were available in the app’s automation editor—not through Ask Home or “Help me create.”
Example: double-press lighting control
Goal: Double-press a compatible switch to turn off downstairs lights.
- Starter: switch or button pressed twice.
- Condition: optionally require someone to be home.
- Actions: turn off the selected downstairs lights.
- Test: press twice deliberately and check the automation or activity history if a run record is shown.
For an initial test, use lighting rather than a lock, heater, oven, garage door, or other safety-sensitive device.

Which switches and buttons work?
The safe rule is simple: a device must expose a supported press event to Google Home. Being controllable from Google Home is not enough. A product may let Google Home turn it on or off while providing no button event that can start an automation.
Compatibility commonly depends on a Matter connection or a compatible Works with Google Home manufacturer integration. Google’s supported-device and trait matrix lists support by partner, device type, model, and capability. A brand appearing in that table does not prove that every model supports single, multi-, or long-press events.
Before buying or installing a device, verify that:
- It appears in Google Home, not only in the manufacturer’s app.
- It is represented as a supported switch, dimmer, button, or related device type.
- The integration supports a starter event, not merely device actions.
- The desired press type appears in the automation editor.
- Any required hub or bridge is supported and online.
- Each button on a multi-button product is exposed as expected.
Matter switches deserve particular attention
Google’s June 2026 update described additional support for Matter switches: users could configure button actions from the switch’s device tile, while multi-button switches could appear as a unified tile with controls for individual buttons. That is useful evidence for compatible Matter switch hardware, but it is not a promise that every Matter accessory or standalone button will expose every event type.

- It is not universal standalone-button support. A generic Bluetooth, Zigbee, Z-Wave, or proprietary button may require its own bridge or may not expose events to Google Home at all.
- Every press type is not guaranteed. One device may offer a single press while another offers double press or long press.
- It is not necessarily local. Automations may depend on Wi-Fi, the internet, Google services, and the manufacturer’s cloud service.
- It is not a safety system. Google warns that routines may fail and should not be relied on for safety-critical functions. See its automation reliability guidance.
- It was not initially voice-configurable. The documented launch path was the Google Home app automation editor.
Google Home compared with alternatives
Google Home is a good fit when the household already uses Google devices, compatible Matter switches, and simple cloud-based automations. It provides one central app and avoids adding another automation platform.

- Amazon Alexa: a strong option for Alexa households with compatible switches and buttons.
- Apple Home: suitable for homes centered on iPhone, iPad, HomePod, and Matter accessories.
- Samsung SmartThings: better suited to mixed-protocol homes and more advanced hub-based setups.
- Home Assistant: the most flexible choice for local control, complex logic, and broad hardware support, but it requires substantially more setup and maintenance.
Troubleshooting
The button does not appear as a starter
- Confirm the device is online in its native app.
- Check that the manufacturer account is linked to Google Home.
- Update the Google Home app, device firmware, and any bridge or hub.
- Check Google’s supported-device matrix for the exact model and trait.
- Try creating the automation in the Google Home app rather than by voice.
- If normal control works but no starter appears, the integration probably exposes actions but not button events.
Relinking an integration may help synchronization, but check first whether it will affect existing rooms, devices, or automations.
Single press works, but long press or double press does not
This normally indicates partial event support. The release notes describe the available categories generally; the manufacturer integration determines which ones Google Home actually offers for a particular device.
The automation runs inconsistently
Check the Wi-Fi connection, hub or bridge, manufacturer service status, device availability, and overlapping automations. Also check whether the device is reporting a discrete press or only an on/off state. Rapid repeated presses may arrive before a previous automation has completed.

Buying advice for a renovation or new installation
If you are choosing a smart switch or dimmer, prioritize explicit Google Home automation-starter support—not merely “Works with Google Assistant.” Look for Matter support, the exact press types advertised, required hub or bridge hardware, regional electrical certification, neutral-wire requirements, multi-button behavior, firmware support, and what happens if the vendor’s cloud service is unavailable.
A Matter logo alone does not prove that Google Home will expose single-, double-, or long-press starters. Confirm the exact model’s Google Home behavior before making it part of a wiring or lighting plan.
Verdict
Google Home’s February 2026 button support closes a real gap for simple physical controls. It is especially promising for compatible Matter switches, dimmers, and multi-button controllers. The important qualification is that Google added software support for events exposed by compatible devices—not an equivalent to a universal Google button. Check the exact model in the automation editor and Google’s support matrix before you buy or install.
