Google Gnome was not a real Google Home product. Google introduced it on March 31, 2017, as a fictional April Fools’ Day announcement: an imaginary voice-activated assistant for the backyard. There is no verified Google Gnome device to buy, install, activate, or connect to Google Home.
The concept was presented as an outdoor counterpart to Google Home, complete with the fictional wake phrase “Ok Gnome” and an entertaining list of smart-yard abilities. Real Google Home products can now support outdoor cameras, compatible controls, and automations, but those are separate technologies—not a revival of Google Gnome.

Google Gnome was a parody product announced in the official Google Blog post published on March 31, 2017, immediately before April Fools’ Day.
Google’s fictional premise was simple: Google Home had made the indoor home smarter, so the backyard was supposedly the “final frontier” of the smart home. Google Gnome was presented as the answer—a garden gnome-style assistant designed to make outdoor living voice-controlled.

The announcement used polished product language and imagery, which made the idea look like a plausible Google launch. However, it did not provide a genuine price, retail listing, release date, hardware specification, setup guide, firmware, or support documentation.
What was Google Gnome supposed to do?
The fictional assistant was activated with the phrase “Ok Gnome.” According to Google’s announcement, users could supposedly ask it about sounds coming from bushes, including identifying an opossum, and receive help monitoring or replenishing birdseed.
The most obviously absurd feature was the claim that Google Gnome could use fictional “high-intensity lasers” to trim hedges into different shapes. Contemporary coverage also attributed other imagined abilities to the gag, including turning on a hose, controlling a lawn mower, and explaining which flowers were safe or poisonous to eat. Those additional details were reported by TIME’s contemporary coverage and should not be treated as a formal Google specification.
Was Google Gnome connected to Google Home?
Yes, but only conceptually. Google described Gnome as the backyard equivalent of Google Home. It was not documented as a Google Home accessory, a Google Assistant device, or a supported third-party product.
“Ok Gnome” was part of the joke. It was not a real Google Assistant activation phrase and is not a currently supported way to activate Google Home.
Can you buy Google Gnome today?
No. Google Gnome was a fictional prank rather than a discontinued commercial product. There is no verified retail device, official Google Store listing, legitimate signup process, installation procedure, or support path for it.

Be cautious with marketplace listings, videos, or images that present Google Gnome as functional hardware. They may show a garden ornament, parody merchandise, an unofficial project, or edited or AI-generated material. The original announcement’s photographs and product-style writing do not prove that Google manufactured working units containing a microphone, speaker, camera, laser, or network connection.
Why did the prank seem believable?
Google Gnome borrowed familiar smart-home conventions:
- A short voice wake phrase.
- Natural-language questions and answers.
- Connected outdoor equipment.
- Animal and environmental recognition.
- A branded physical object placed in the home environment.
Those elements made the concept resemble a natural extension of Google Home. The joke also mixed plausible smart-home ideas with deliberately exaggerated features, such as wildlife interpretation and laser-powered hedge shaping.
What can Google Home actually do outdoors?
Modern Google Home can support real outdoor functions through compatible products and services. Google’s current documentation covers cameras, smart-home controls, automations, and newer assistant capabilities, including camera-based event understanding in supported configurations. See Google’s current Google Home and camera documentation for device, account, regional, and rollout requirements.
Gemini for Home provides newer natural-language assistant functionality in supported markets and configurations. It does not bring Google Gnome back, nor does it turn one Google Home speaker into an autonomous backyard manager.
Current features should be understood as separate building blocks. A camera may detect or describe supported events, while a compatible smart device may respond to an automation. Neither guarantees that a system can identify every animal, understand every outdoor sound, operate powered machinery safely, or manage an entire garden without human oversight.

Building a real smart backyard
If you want the real-world version of a “smart yard,” plan for several purpose-built systems rather than one magical device.
Outdoor monitoring
Use weather-appropriate security cameras or dedicated wildlife cameras, depending on whether your priority is security or nature observation. Check mounting requirements, night performance, storage and subscription terms, network range, and whether the camera may capture neighboring property or public areas.
Google’s connected-home products are listed through the Google Store connected-home category. Ring is another outdoor-monitoring ecosystem; compare its official product and subscription information with your privacy and compatibility requirements.
Lighting and outdoor controls
Compatible smart plugs, switches, lighting controls, and sensors can operate suitable outdoor equipment or trigger routines. A Google Home speaker alone does not make an outdoor appliance smart. You may also need a hub or bridge, reliable Wi-Fi, compatible wiring, and a device specifically rated for outdoor use.
Irrigation
Smart irrigation controllers can automate watering schedules and, depending on the system, adjust them using weather or soil information. A service such as Rachio is a dedicated irrigation solution, not a general backyard assistant. It normally requires an existing compatible sprinkler system and appropriate installation.
Wildlife observation
Dedicated trail cameras, bird cameras, microphones, and nature-monitoring equipment are better suited to wildlife observation than assuming a general-purpose home camera will identify every animal accurately.

Lawn and garden maintenance
Robotic mowers, irrigation controllers, lighting systems, and conventional garden tools each solve narrower problems. They should be evaluated independently for boundary setup, weather exposure, safety controls, maintenance, and local rules. No current Google Home feature makes the fictional laser hedge trimmer real.

- Weather rating: Select devices, enclosures, cables, and connectors rated for the local rain, heat, cold, and humidity.
- Electrical protection: Outdoor outlets and equipment may require GFCI protection, weatherproof covers, and installation that complies with local electrical requirements.
- Network coverage: Wi-Fi often weakens at the edge of a property. Test coverage where the device will actually be installed, rather than beside the indoor router.
- Privacy: Aim cameras carefully and review recording, sharing, storage, and subscription settings.
- Voice reliability: Wind, traffic, distance, and lawn equipment can interfere with voice commands.
- Safety controls: Voice control should not replace physical shutoffs or supervision around water, gates, powered tools, vehicles, or machinery.
- Compatibility: Features may depend on country, language, account type, app version, device generation, and staged software rollout.
How to recognize misleading Google Gnome claims
A claim is questionable if it offers a supposedly new or discontinued Google Gnome but cannot provide an official Google product page, model number, setup documentation, firmware, or verifiable support information. Also distinguish between:
- Google’s official April Fools’ copy: animal-sound questions, birdseed help, and fictional hedge-trimming lasers.
- Contemporary secondary reporting: additional imagined functions such as hose and mower control.
- Later internet speculation: claims that should not be treated as Google-confirmed features.
Calling Gnome “discontinued” is misleading because that implies a real commercial launch. The more accurate description is: Google Gnome was a fictional April Fools’ product announcement that was never documented as a retail device.
Conclusion
Google Gnome was Google’s March 31, 2017 joke about a voice-controlled backyard companion. “Ok Gnome,” animal-sound answers, birdseed assistance, and laser-shaped hedges belonged to the fictional presentation. The concept was inspired by Google Home, but it was never a real product and cannot be purchased or activated today.
