Google Gemini for Home Is Expanding—But Smart-Home Controls Aren’t Available to Everyone Yet

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Google is expanding Gemini for Home to more Google Home and Nest households, but it has not reached everyone. As of August 18, 2026, Google still describes the voice assistant as an early-access, gradual rollout. Eligibility depends on your country, language, Google account, home, device model, firmware and server-side access.

The core upgrade—voice control for compatible lights, plugs, thermostats, locks and other smart-home devices—is free. Gemini Live and some advanced camera and home-summary features require a paid Google Home Premium plan.

The short answer

  • Availability: Expanding gradually, not globally available to every Google Home owner.
  • Basic controls: Free when Gemini for Home reaches your household.
  • Gemini Live: Requires Google Home Premium and compatible hardware.
  • Advanced camera search and Home Brief: Require Google Home Premium Advanced.
  • Existing hardware: Many Google Home and Nest speakers and displays are supported.
  • Important catch: After a home switches to Gemini for Home, Google says it cannot switch back to Google Assistant.

Google’s current rollout documentation is available in its Gemini for Home support guide.

What is actually rolling out?

“Gemini for Home” describes several related features rather than one universal product switch.

#1 Best Overall
Amazon Echo Show 5 (newest model), Smart display, Designed for Alexa+, 2x the bass and clearer sound, Cloud Blue
  • Alexa can show you more - Echo Show 5 includes a 5.5” display so you can see news and weather at a glance, make video calls, view compatible cameras, stream music and shows, and more.
  • Small size, bigger sound – Stream your favorite music, shows, podcasts, and more from providers like Amazon Music, Spotify, and Prime Video—now with deeper bass and clearer vocals. Includes a 5.5" display so you can view shows, song titles, and more at a glance.
  • Keep your home comfortable – Control compatible smart devices like lights and thermostats, even while you're away.
  • See more with the built-in camera – Check in on your family, pets, and more using the built-in camera. Drop in on your home when you're out or view the front door from your Echo Show 5 with compatible video doorbells.
  • See your photos on display – When not in use, set the background to a rotating slideshow of your favorite photos. Invite family and friends to share photos to your Echo Show. Prime members also get unlimited cloud photo storage.

Gemini for Home voice assistant

This is the household voice assistant replacing Google Assistant on compatible Google Home and Nest speakers and displays. Google says it can control devices, play and search for media, set alarms and timers, manage calendars, notes, lists and reminders, answer questions and support follow-up conversations.

Gemini features in the Google Home app

The Google Home app is also gaining more natural-language automation creation, suggested automations, richer controls and AI-powered camera features. Availability varies by device, country and subscription tier.

Gemini Live

Gemini Live is the more open-ended conversational mode. Google describes it as suitable for advice, brainstorming, learning and troubleshooting, with an interruptible conversation rather than a single request-and-response exchange. It requires Google Home Premium and compatible hardware.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This is separate from the Gemini mobile app. Gemini for Home is built around shared household context and connected devices; the mobile app is primarily a personal assistant.

Is Gemini for Home available in your country?

Google’s early-access list currently includes Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Finland, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Mexico, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, the United Kingdom and the United States.

Google lists Danish, Dutch, English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Norwegian, Spanish and Swedish, with country-specific variations. Being in a supported country does not guarantee immediate access: Google enables homes gradually and says eligible users receive an in-app notification.

So “rolling out to everyone” should be understood as an expansion to more users in participating markets—not universal availability for every Google Home household worldwide.

Compatible Google Home and Nest devices

Google lists these devices as supporting the complete Gemini for Home voice assistant when they meet the required firmware levels:

  • Google Home Speaker (2026)
  • Google Nest Hub (second generation)
  • Google Nest Audio
  • Google Nest Mini (second generation)
  • Google Nest Hub Max
  • Google Nest Hub (first generation)
  • Google Home Mini (first generation)

The minimum first-party firmware requirements are Cast firmware 3.76 or later for speakers and Fuchsia firmware 28 or later for displays.

Device Basic Gemini for Home Gemini Live Qualification
Google Home Speaker (2026) Yes Yes, with Premium Designed for Gemini
Nest Mini (2nd gen.) Yes Yes, with Premium Supported firmware required
Nest Audio Yes Yes, with Premium Supported firmware required
Nest Hub (2nd gen.) Yes Yes, with Premium Full experience listed by Google
Nest Hub Max Yes Yes, with Premium Full experience listed by Google

Google Home Mini (1st gen.) Yes Documentation varies Check current rollout and firmware status
Original Google Home, Home Max and Nest Wifi point Most features No Live listed Reduced feature parity
Third-party speakers and displays Most features may work No Live listed Compatibility varies

There is an unresolved documentation difference for first-generation Home Mini and Nest Hub devices. Google’s general compatibility page says older devices may support most Gemini features but not Gemini Live, while July 2026 early-access reports described Live expanding to those models. Treat Live support on those devices as rollout-dependent rather than guaranteed.

Google Nest Hub 7” Smart Display with Google Assistant (1st Gen) - Chalk (Bulk Packaging)

  • Korean Spec Model – International/Korean version of the Google Nest Hub H1A. Language can be changed to English after setup through the Google Home app/device settings.
  • Smart Home Control – Use voice commands or the touchscreen to control compatible smart lights, cameras, thermostats, plugs, speakers, and other Google Assistant devices.
  • Entertainment & Daily Help – Stream music, watch videos, view Google Photos, check weather, set timers, manage reminders, follow recipes, and get answers hands-free.
  • Compact 7" Display Design – Great for kitchens, bedrooms, desks, offices, counters, and nightstands with a clean modern smart display design.

In the United States, Google Home Premium Standard is listed at $10 per month or $100 per year. Premium Advanced costs $20 per month or $200 per year. Google says annual billing saves $20 on Standard and $40 on Advanced. Prices and availability can differ outside the U.S.

Google has also renamed its Nest Aware subscriptions. Existing Nest Aware subscribers were moved to Premium Standard, while Nest Aware Plus subscribers were moved to Premium Advanced. Google says their billing did not change, so existing subscribers should check their account before buying another plan.

How to request early access

  1. Update the Google Home app.
  2. Open Google Home and tap your profile picture or initial in the top-right corner.
  3. Tap Home settings.
  4. Tap Early Access.
  5. Follow the enrollment instructions.

Google also says you must allow Google Groups to add you to relevant early-access groups:

  1. Sign in to Google Groups.
  2. Open Settings.
  3. Open Global settings.
  4. Turn on Add me to their groups.
  5. Save the setting.

Gemini for Home early access is separate from the Google Home app Public Preview. Joining Public Preview alone does not guarantee access to the Gemini voice assistant.

How to activate Gemini for Home

When your home is eligible, Google says you should receive a notification titled “Introducing Gemini for Home.”

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Tap the notification.
  2. Tap Get started.
  3. Review the disclosures.
  4. Choose setup and response-filtering options.
  5. Complete the voice-assistant configuration.

If you dismissed the notification, open Google Home, tap your profile picture or initial, select Home settings, find the banner “Set up Gemini for Home for more natural conversations,” and tap Get started.

On Android, Google may require an update to Speech Recognition and Synthesis before setup can finish.

Before you confirm

The upgrade applies to the household, not just one person. Compatible devices already in the home—and compatible devices added later—use Gemini for Home. Google says the change is irreversible: the home cannot return to Google Assistant after switching.

What changes from Google Assistant?

Google is positioning Gemini for Home as less dependent on exact command wording. Instead of naming a precise device and issuing a rigid command, you can describe the result you want. It is also designed to handle multi-part requests and conversational follow-ups without requiring “Hey Google” each time.

Representative requests might include asking for a group of lights to be adjusted, creating an automation in natural language, asking a follow-up question about a previous answer, or requesting help troubleshooting a connected device. Google also describes uses such as cooking guidance, explanations and brainstorming.

That does not mean every request will be interpreted perfectly. Google warns that responses can vary and should be checked for accuracy. Similar device names, locks, thermostats, routines and ambiguous instructions deserve extra care.

If Gemini does not appear

Work through these checks:

  • Confirm that your country and chosen language are supported.
  • Update the Google Home app.
  • Check device firmware: Cast 3.76 or later for speakers, or Fuchsia 28 or later for displays.
  • Confirm that the correct Google account owns or manages the home.
  • Check the Google Groups setting allowing you to be added to groups.
  • On Android, update Speech Recognition and Synthesis.
  • Confirm that you joined Gemini for Home early access, not only Google Home app Public Preview.
  • Wait for the server-side invitation; an updated app does not guarantee immediate eligibility.

If all of these conditions are met and there is still no banner, the most likely explanation is that Google has not enabled your home yet. Consult Google’s current troubleshooting and eligibility guidance rather than assuming a new speaker or Premium subscription will force activation.

Should you subscribe or buy a new speaker?

The free upgrade is enough if you want

  • Voice control for lights, plugs, thermostats, locks or scenes.
  • Media playback.
  • Timers, alarms, lists, reminders and calendars.
  • More natural phrasing and Continued Conversation.

You do not need the $99.99 Google Home Speaker solely to obtain basic Gemini smart-home controls on compatible existing hardware.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Premium may be worthwhile if you want

  • Gemini Live conversations.
  • More advanced natural-language automation tools.
  • Sound detection.
  • Searchable camera event history and AI-generated descriptions.
  • Home Brief and daily-style summaries.

Premium is a recurring subscription, and Advanced—not Standard—is required for camera-history search and Home Brief. A subscription also cannot make unsupported hardware fully compatible.

The 2026 Google Home Speaker is more compelling if you need a new room endpoint, want a device designed for Gemini Live, or value its six months of Premium Standard and three months of YouTube Premium promotion. The listed U.S. price is $99.99, subject to Google’s offer terms.

Readers who prefer another ecosystem can also consider Amazon Alexa, Apple Home and HomePod, or Samsung SmartThings. Their device compatibility, automation tools, assistant behavior and subscription models differ.

Privacy, reliability and home-safety considerations

Gemini for Home is cloud-connected. Google Home requires the Google Home app, a Google Account, Wi-Fi and internet access, while automations also depend on the connectivity of the devices they control.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Google says users can review or delete Gemini for Home activity in the Google Home app. The app also provides response filtering and parental controls, and Google says voice-matched children receive a filtered experience. The new Google Home Speaker includes a physical microphone-mute switch.

Do not treat an AI-generated answer, camera description or device interpretation as an infallible security decision. In particular, do not rely on Gemini alone to determine whether a smoke alarm is active, a door is locked, a person is present or an emergency is underway.

Bottom line

Google’s Gemini for Home expansion is significant for existing Google Home and Nest owners because basic controls can arrive on compatible hardware without a new purchase or subscription. But the rollout is still gradual, feature parity varies by device, and the most advanced conversational and camera features are paid. Check your home’s eligibility, firmware, language and preview enrollment—and remember that accepting the migration means giving up the option to return to Google Assistant.
