Belkin shut down the Wemo cloud service, app support, and technical support for select older Wemo products on January 31, 2026. The shutdown has already happened—but it does not mean every affected device is physically useless.
Wemo app control, remote access, Alexa, and Google Assistant integration generally stopped working. A switch, plug, or appliance controller may still operate manually, while devices configured with Apple HomeKit before the deadline may continue working locally through Apple’s Home app.

What Belkin’s Wemo shutdown changed
Belkin’s support notice applies to select Wemo products, not necessarily every device sold under the Wemo name. The company ended the services that made many older products “smart”:

- Cloud access: remote control from outside the home is no longer available.
- Alexa and Google Assistant: Belkin says these integrations stopped working because they depend on Wemo’s cloud service.
- New setup and reconfiguration: Belkin says affected devices can no longer be newly configured through the Wemo app or HomeKit after the shutdown.
- Support and updates: Belkin ended technical support and future software or firmware support for the affected products.
The electrical hardware itself may continue to work. A Wemo plug can still supply power when switched on, and a wall switch can still be operated at the device. That is different from retaining schedules, scenes, voice commands, remote access, or app control.

What still may work
| Function | Expected status after the shutdown |
|---|---|
| Physical on/off button or wall switch | Usually still available |
| Wemo mobile app | No longer available for affected products |
| Remote control away from home | No |
| Amazon Alexa | No, for affected cloud-dependent products |
| Google Assistant | No, for affected cloud-dependent products |
| Apple Home | May continue locally if setup was completed before January 31, 2026 |
| New setup after a reset | May not be possible |
Apple HomeKit is the main exception. Belkin says products that were already configured with HomeKit before the cutoff may continue to function locally through Apple’s Home app. Belkin also identifies Thread-based Wemo products as continuing to work through HomeKit.
This is not a guarantee for every Wemo model. HomeKit operation depends on the specific product and whether setup was completed before the deadline. It also does not restore the Wemo app, Alexa, Google Assistant, or Wemo cloud access.
Which Wemo products are affected?
Check the model number rather than relying only on the product’s marketing name. Wemo names were reused across product revisions, and compatibility can differ between versions. The model number is typically printed on the device, its label, packaging, or original documentation.

What Wemo owners should do now
If the device still works in Apple Home
- Open Apple’s Home app and test the accessory locally.
- Test the physical button or switch as well.
- Do not remove the accessory from Apple Home merely because the Wemo app no longer works.
- Avoid a factory reset unless you have accepted that the device may not be recoverable afterward.
- Be cautious when changing Wi-Fi credentials, deleting a HomeKit bridge, or rebuilding your home configuration.
A router change or missing Home hub can make a previously functional HomeKit accessory appear offline. Check the network and Apple Home setup before resetting the Wemo device. For Thread products, problems may also involve the Thread network or border router.
If the device stopped responding
- Identify the exact model number and serial number.
- Test the physical switch, button, or appliance controls.
- Check whether the accessory remains visible in Apple Home.
- Do not expect reinstalling the Wemo app to restore the discontinued cloud service.
- Before recycling the device, check whether it may qualify for Belkin’s refund process.
A smart plug, heater, coffee maker, or switch can lose cloud features while retaining ordinary electrical operation. Conversely, a device that is physically dead may have a separate hardware, power, or wiring problem unrelated to the cloud shutdown.

Once configured, communication and control between Matter devices can be achieved directly on the local network.
- 【Matter: Future-Proofing】Matter devices will be compatible with future updates and advancements in technology, ensuring that your smart home system remains up-to-date and compatible with new devices and features.

Can Belkin provide a refund?
Belkin says some products that were still under warranty on or after January 31, 2026 may qualify for a refund after review. This is not an automatic refund, universal reimbursement, or replacement guarantee.
The official Wemo end-of-support form requests information including:
- Proof of purchase
- Model number
- Serial number
- Purchase date
- Purchase price
Eligibility is assessed individually and depends on the product’s warranty status and the information submitted. Use Belkin’s official form rather than an unrelated refund website.

Can Home Assistant or another local platform rescue a Wemo device?
Possibly, but it is not a guaranteed or Belkin-supported solution. Some Wemo products have historically supported local-network control or third-party integrations. Compatibility can vary by model, firmware, network setup, and whether the device needed Belkin services for initial authorization or discovery.

- Remote Control: To enable HomeKit remote control, you need a HomePod, an Apple TV 4K, Apple TV HD, or an iPad. Set any of these Apple devices in your house as a HomeKit bridge and connect it to your home 2.4GHz Wi-Fi network. Keep in mind that once your HomeKit bridge is set up, it has to be kept online. If it is powered off or disconnected from the Wi-Fi, it will fail to respond when you intend to control the device remotely.
- Voice Control: You can control your devices hands free, just give voice commands to turn on/off the connected devices. Compatible with Apple HomeKit, Apple Watch, Siri, Carplay, Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant.
- Compact Size: Smart plug occupies only one socket, the device allows you to stack two mini smart plugs in the same outlet, which is convenient and practical.
- Schedule: You can schedule connected devices to turn on and off automatically by smart plugs. Save energy when lights are not needed or left on by accident. Sunrise and sunset setting are supported.
- Quality: The meross Smart outlet is made of PC flame retardant material, and has been approved for safety and quality assurance. Certified by ETL and FCC, it supports home appliance up to 15A.
A reset device may be especially difficult to add again. Community-maintained integrations can also stop working without notice. Treat Home Assistant and reverse-engineered local-control projects as experimental options for technically confident owners—not as a dependable replacement for the discontinued Wemo service.
Choosing a replacement
If a Wemo device is no longer useful, match the replacement to the smart-home platform already in use:
- Apple Home: prioritize a device that explicitly supports Apple Home or Matter. Thread can be attractive, but check that the home has a compatible Thread border router and controller.
- Alexa or Google Home: verify direct compatibility for the exact model. Do not assume that Matter support provides identical features on every platform.
- Local control: look for Matter, documented local operation, or compatibility with a local controller such as Home Assistant.
- Simple installation: Wi-Fi plugs and switches may avoid buying a separate hub, but examine account, internet, remote-access, and end-of-support requirements.
Products from ecosystems such as Aqara, TP-Link Tapo, Eve, and other manufacturers may be options, but compatibility is model-specific. Matter reduces dependence on one manufacturer’s app; it does not guarantee that every feature remains available if a vendor changes its service.
Recommended Free Tools
For a replacement, check:
- Supported platforms and Matter version, if applicable.
- Whether Thread requires a border router or hub.
- Whether core operation works without internet access.
- Whether remote access requires an account or subscription.
- Local-control and Home Assistant support.
- Electrical ratings and suitability for the intended appliance.
- Warranty terms and the manufacturer’s end-of-support policy.
Plug-in products are generally easier to replace than wall switches. A new switch may require a neutral wire, compatible electrical box, appropriate load rating, and three-way wiring support. Smart plugs should not be used with heating, motor-driven, or high-load appliances unless the exact device is rated for that use.
The practical takeaway
Belkin’s January 31, 2026 Wemo shutdown removed the cloud-dependent layer from select products, not necessarily their basic electrical function. Test manual operation and Apple Home before replacing a device, avoid resetting a functioning HomeKit accessory, and check the exact model against Belkin’s list. If replacement is necessary, prioritize interoperability and documented local operation over another product that depends entirely on a single vendor’s cloud.
