The update began for Preview Program users on June 23, 2022, and reached the stable channel around August 24, 2022. It replaced the device’s previous Cast OS software platform while leaving most of the Nest Hub Max experience looking and working much as before.
The short answer
Google delivered Fuchsia to the Nest Hub Max as an automatic over-the-air update. Owners did not need to flash the device, unlock it, or install a developer version of the operating system.

The change was primarily under the hood. It did not turn the Nest Hub Max into an Android tablet, add an Android app store, or introduce a major redesign. Early reporting indicated that the existing interface, performance and core features remained essentially unchanged. A Bluetooth settings menu was among the visible changes reported with the stable update.
Google’s current support documentation still includes a dedicated Fuchsia version field for Nest displays and lists Nest Hub Max firmware releases in 2026, including version 30.20260121.103.1604600, dated July 7, 2026. See Google’s Nest firmware version and update information.

What changed for Nest Hub Max owners?
The operating system changed, not the product category
The Nest Hub Max continued to be a Google smart display with Assistant features, a touchscreen, speakers, video calling and a built-in Nest Cam. Fuchsia replaced the underlying Cast OS software, but the transition was designed to be largely invisible to users.
Owners should not expect a dramatic speed boost, a new home screen, Android compatibility or a redesigned interface solely because the device runs Fuchsia. The original migration was a platform change rather than a headline feature upgrade.

The camera remained part of the same smart-display experience
The Nest Hub Max is more complex than a basic smart speaker because its software also supports video calls, remote Nest Cam viewing and camera-sensing features such as Face Match and Quick Gestures. Google documents these capabilities and the camera’s operating states in its Nest Hub Max camera support guide.
Fuchsia did not mean that the camera was automatically activated. The existing camera controls and LED indicators remained important: the LED communicates when the camera is streaming, while camera sensing is a separate function. The camera may stream during a video call or when the device is being viewed remotely through Nest Cam.

How to check whether your Nest Hub Max runs Fuchsia
You can confirm the operating system directly on the display:
- Swipe up from the bottom of the Nest Hub Max screen.
- Tap Settings.
- Tap Technical Information.
- Look for Fuchsia version.
This on-device entry is the clearest confirmation. A firmware or system build number is not necessarily the same thing as the Fuchsia version.

If the Fuchsia version is missing
- Make sure you are checking the display itself, not only the Google Home mobile app.
- Keep the device connected to power and Wi-Fi while it waits for an automatic update.
- Menu names can vary slightly by language and later software version.
- Do not assume that a missing menu item proves the device is still running Cast OS; check the current software information and Google’s latest support instructions.
Google distributes firmware in stages, so two otherwise identical devices may temporarily show different versions. Do not expect every Nest Hub Max to display the same build at the same time.

What Fuchsia means for the Nest Hub Max
Fuchsia is Google’s operating system built around the Zircon kernel rather than the Linux kernel used by Android. For Nest Hub owners, its practical significance is that Google can maintain a different software foundation for supported smart-home hardware without asking owners to replace the device or learn a new interface.
Best Value

- Compact 7" Display Design – Great for kitchens, bedrooms, desks, offices, counters, and nightstands with a clean modern smart display design.
That may help Google maintain and update the platform over time, although it should be treated as an engineering rationale rather than a promise of a particular consumer benefit. The continued publication of Fuchsia-specific version information and 2026 firmware listings shows that the Nest Hub Max remains part of Google’s supported update system.
Matter, Thread and Bluetooth are separate from the original migration
Later Fuchsia updates included improvements related to Bluetooth, Matter and Thread. Those later changes should not be confused with the initial 2022 operating-system transition.
Google’s current Matter compatibility documentation lists the Nest Hub Max as supporting Matter over both Wi-Fi and Thread. That confirms current capability, but it does not mean every Matter or Thread feature arrived in the first Fuchsia update. Availability can also depend on the Google Home setup, account, region and the specific smart-home device.

- It is not a new 2026 rollout. The Nest Hub Max transition happened in 2022.
- It is not an Android replacement announcement. Fuchsia replacing Cast OS on Nest displays does not prove that Google plans to replace Android on Pixel phones, tablets or computers.
- It is not a user-installable operating system. The Nest Hub Max remains a locked-down appliance; consumer owners cannot freely install alternate operating systems.
- It does not mean every Nest product runs Fuchsia. The confirmed consumer deployment covers the Nest Hub display family, not necessarily every Nest speaker, camera or streaming device.
- It does not guarantee faster performance. The initial user-facing experience was reported as largely unchanged.
What should Nest Hub Max owners do?
Usually, nothing. The update was designed to install automatically. If you are curious, use the display’s Settings → Technical Information → Fuchsia version path to verify the software. Continue applying automatic firmware updates, keep the device connected to Wi-Fi and power, and use the camera indicators and controls as normal.
If a camera, calling or smart-home feature is unavailable, do not automatically blame Fuchsia. Those functions can have separate account, regional, network or service requirements, and later firmware updates are distinct from the original operating-system migration.
