The thermostats were not necessarily disabled as heating and cooling controls, but their connected features—including app control, remote access, notifications, Google Assistant, Home/Away Assist, and Nest Protect emergency shutoff—are no longer available. Existing local schedules and on-device controls may continue to work, but Google no longer provides software or security updates.

What stopped working after October 25, 2025?
The important distinction is between the thermostat’s cloud-connected functions and its local HVAC controls.

- The Nest Thermostat is designed to work without a C wire in most homes, but for some systems, including heating only, cooling only, zone controlled, and heat pump systems, you’ll need a C wire or other compatible power accessory
- Nest Thermostat turns itself down when you leave, so you don’t waste energy heating or cooling an empty home. Lock feature: No
- Programmable thermostat that lets you create an energy efficient schedule in the Google Home app on your Android or iPhone
- Remote control lets family members change the thermostat temperature from anywhere on a phone, laptop, or tablet[1]
Connected features that ended
- Connection to the Google Nest and Google Home apps.
- Remote temperature adjustments and status checks from a phone or tablet.
- Notifications.
- Google Assistant control.
- Home/Away Assist.
- Multi-device Eco mode control.
- The connection between the affected thermostat and Nest Protect.
- Future software and security updates.
Google says affected thermostats were unpaired from, or removed from, the Nest and Home apps beginning October 25, 2025. A device that still appears in an account, shows cached information, reports diagnostic logs, or displays a connection status should not be treated as fully supported.
The thermostat may show “None” or “Connected” after unpairing. That on-device status does not restore remote app control.
What still works?
Google says owners can continue controlling affected thermostats directly from the device. Depending on the installation and the thermostat’s condition, this includes:

- Switching between available heating and cooling modes.
- Adjusting on-device settings.
- Managing auto-schedule settings.
- Running existing thermostat schedules.
In practical terms, an old thermostat may still turn the heating or air conditioning on and off locally. It did not necessarily become physically unusable on the support-ending date.
That continued operation is not a promise of indefinite reliability. A future hardware fault, power problem, Wi-Fi change, or HVAC issue will be occurring on a device that no longer receives software fixes or security updates. A factory reset or attempt to configure replacement Wi-Fi may also create problems without restoring app functionality, so do not reset the thermostat as a general troubleshooting step.

What happens to schedules?
Google says preset schedules continue to operate and that auto-schedule settings can still be managed on the thermostat itself. Existing thermostat scheduling should therefore continue locally.
Cloud-based automations are different. Do not assume that every automation created through an app, Google Assistant, Home/Away Assist, or multi-device Eco control will continue in the same way. The safest expectation is that the thermostat’s existing on-device schedule remains available while app-dependent features do not.
Nest Protect warning: emergency shutoff is gone
Affected thermostats disconnect from Nest Protect. Google specifically says the thermostat-linked emergency shutoff function will no longer run.
This does not mean that Nest Protect necessarily stops detecting smoke or carbon monoxide on its own. The documented change is the loss of its connection to the affected thermostat and the related emergency-shutoff behavior. If your safety plan depended on that connection, review the setup rather than assuming the old protection remains active.
How to identify your thermostat
Do not rely only on the faceplate or overall appearance. Used devices may have replacement displays, aftermarket trim, or regional differences that make visual identification unreliable.

- Check the thermostat’s device information and look for its model and serial number.
- Review the device listing in your Nest or Google account, if the device is still shown there.
- Check the software version and other device details in the available Nest or Google Home menus.
- Confirm that it is a Learning Thermostat, not the later low-cost Nest Thermostat or Nest Thermostat E.

Should you keep using the old thermostat?
Keeping it may be reasonable when local control and scheduling still work, the HVAC system is straightforward, and you do not need remote control, notifications, voice commands, or thermostat-linked Nest Protect behavior.
Replacement is more compelling when you need to monitor a vacant property remotely, control temperatures from your phone, receive alerts, use room sensors, or avoid relying on unsupported equipment. It is also sensible to plan ahead if the old thermostat is already showing wiring, power, display, or HVAC-control problems.
Do not buy an affected 1st- or 2nd-generation Learning Thermostat as a cheap “smart thermostat.” It may function locally, but it no longer offers the cloud features and support that justified buying a connected model.

Nest Learning Thermostat (4th gen.)
The 4th-generation Learning Thermostat is the closest modern Nest successor for owners who want a rotating physical thermostat, automatic schedule learning, room-temperature sensing, and more extensive HVAC support. Google lists support for most 24-volt systems, including gas, electric, oil, forced-air, heat-pump, and radiant systems. Compatible installations may support up to three heating stages, three cooling stages, humidification, dehumidification, and ventilation.
Google says the package includes one 2nd-generation Nest Temperature Sensor and that the thermostat works with Google Home, Matter-enabled apps, and voice assistants. It is designed to work without a C wire in most homes, although a C wire or Nest Power Connector may be required in limited cases.
See the product page and technical specifications.
Nest Thermostat
The standard Nest Thermostat costs less and is suitable for a relatively conventional HVAC installation where guided scheduling is enough. It uses the Google Home app and supports remote control, but it does not support the Nest Temperature Sensor and does not automatically learn a schedule in the same way as the Learning Thermostat.
Google’s comparison material states that it works with approximately 85% of HVAC systems. Some heating-only, cooling-only, zone-controlled, and heat-pump systems may need a C wire or Nest Power Connector. Check compatibility before purchase.

Check HVAC compatibility before removing anything
Use Google’s compatibility checker before buying or disconnecting a replacement. Compatibility deserves extra attention for:
- Heat pumps and auxiliary or emergency heat.
- Dual-fuel systems.
- Zoned HVAC systems.
- Systems with multiple heating or cooling stages.
- Humidifiers, dehumidifiers, and ventilation equipment.
- Unusual wiring or systems without a conventional 24-volt setup.
Photograph the existing wiring and label each wire before disconnecting the old thermostat. Turn off power to the HVAC equipment first. High-voltage wiring, complex zoning, dual-fuel systems, and auxiliary equipment should be handled by a qualified HVAC professional rather than treated as a universal DIY installation.
What happened to Google’s replacement discount?
Google offered eligible owners in the United States and Canada a discounted 4th-generation Learning Thermostat: $149.99 in the U.S. or CA$219.99 in Canada. The offer used unique promotional links and expired on December 31, 2025. It is not a current 2026 purchasing route.

Google also said eligible users with multiple homes received separate emails and promotional codes by home. Bottom line for homeowners and contractors
The early Nest Learning Thermostats were not simply switched off. Their local thermostat functions and existing on-device schedules may continue, but their smart-home value has largely ended: no supported Nest or Google Home app connection, remote access, notifications, Assistant control, Home/Away Assist, or thermostat-linked Nest Protect emergency shutoff.
If local control is sufficient, you can continue using the device while planning for eventual replacement. If remote management or connected safety behavior is important, replace it with a compatible current thermostat—most directly the Nest Learning Thermostat (4th gen.) or, for simpler systems and a lower price, the standard Nest Thermostat. Always check the HVAC configuration before installation.
