To work with the grain, identify the direction the fibers lie before planing, routing or cutting. The board’s face offers clues, but it can be misleading; check the surface, adjacent edge and end grain, then confirm with a small test cut. That matters because a cutting edge moving against the fibers can catch and lift them, leaving tear-out or splinters.
Why wood grain changes direction
Wood grain reflects the arrangement of fibers and water-conducting vessels in a tree. Growth rings form around the trunk, but fibers do not always run straight: they can twist, branches create knots, and growth-ring variation changes the pattern. The way a log is sawn also affects the grain visible on a board.
As a result, one board can show different grain patterns across its face, and a figured board may change direction within the same piece. A face pattern can suggest the direction, but visual inspection alone may not settle it.
Five ways to check grain direction
- Study the face. Look at the grain lines and figure for a likely direction. Treat this as a first clue, not a sure answer.
- Feel the surface. Run a gloved hand or shop rag along the board. If it snags or catches splinters, you may be moving against the grain.
- Inspect an adjacent edge. Grain lines on the edge can reveal how the fibers travel through the board and help clarify what the face suggests.
- Compare the end grain. Check the growth-ring arches at the end of the board against the cathedral-shaped pattern on the face. Agreement can help indicate the grain’s direction.
- Make a small test cut. Use a cornering tool, chisel or sharp knife in an inconspicuous spot. Splintering is a warning that the edge is cutting against the grain.
How to cut without lifting fibers
Set up the cut so the cutting edge follows the fibers rather than digging beneath them and lifting them. On a board with a consistent grain direction, orient the tool’s movement accordingly. On figured lumber, the fibers may turn, so a single direction may not produce a clean cut across the whole face.

Planing or routing figured boards
When the grain changes direction, work from each end toward the change, taking light cuts. Then take a light finishing cut in the predominant grain direction. Angling a hand plane across the surface can also create a shearing cut that is less likely to tear fibers.
If figured lumber still tears during planing, a sharp-burred card scraper is another option for refining the surface. It is a finishing tool to try when planing causes tear-out, not a substitute for checking grain direction.

Using a planer or jointer
WOOD Magazine Staff’s 2019 guidance recommends sharp knives and light planer or jointer cuts of about 1/64 inch. Check the result as you work; if the board tears, try feeding it end-for-end. Feed slowly without burning, and, if possible, at a slight angle. A true helical or spiral cutterhead shears the wood at an angle.
Crosscutting and mitering
Crosscuts and miter cuts can splinter fibers as the blade exits the wood. Support the fibers near the blade with a zero-clearance insert or fence, or scribe the cut line with a marking knife before cutting. A marking knife helps define the edge of the cut; the insert or fence supports the surrounding fibers.
