Turnover is not equivalent to the amount households spent on renovations, construction output, or the quantity of products sold after adjusting for inflation. Dähne’s 2025 release says the report added views in national currencies to help offset exchange-rate effects and revised its calculated-market model. How the market definition differs from DIY spending
Dähne’s broader Home Improvement Market includes DIY retailers and home centers, building-materials retailers, and furnishing retailers with a DIY character. It excludes pure furniture retailers. The narrower DIY Market covers home centers, hardware stores, and DIY retailers. The two measures should not be used interchangeably.

The 2023 difference is important: Dähne’s latest public summary lists a 3.9% decline, whereas an earlier release reported 4.6%. The 2026 headline therefore supports “third consecutive year” using its current presentation, but historical comparisons should identify the edition cited rather than silently mixing figures.

The public 2026 summary confirms the global 2025 contraction but does not provide a comparable country-by-country breakdown establishing which markets caused it. The detailed regional explanation available here concerns 2024, not 2025, so it should not be carried forward as the explanation for the latest decline.

Dähne reported a 15.4% decline in Asia/Pacific in 2024 and identified China as the main factor in the global result. North America grew 1.6% and Europe grew 1.2% in nominal terms. Currency and inflation when comparing markets
The 2025 headline is expressed in euros, while currency movements can affect comparisons across countries. A nominal turnover increase also does not necessarily mean more goods were sold: inflation can make the value of sales rise even when real purchasing volume falls. Dähne’s addition of national-currency views is intended to help readers separate currency effects, but the euro headline alone should not be read as an inflation-adjusted volume measure. Harvard’s Joint Center for Housing Studies offers a useful but different measure: its January 2024 Leading Indicator of Remodeling Activity projected U.S. owner-occupied improvement and repair spending would fall from $481 billion in 2023 to $450 billion in 2024, with a 6.5% decline by year end. When comparing figures, check five things first: whether the source measures retailer turnover or household spending; the market and retailer categories included; the countries covered; the currency and nominal-versus-real basis; and the report edition and year. For projections, also distinguish the population covered and projected spending from observed results.
