GeoBitmine LLC is developing an eastern Idaho concept that pairs modular data-center infrastructure with hydroponic greenhouses, routing heat from servers toward crops that need warmth. It is a real project with public permitting and testing discussions and technical assistance from Idaho National Laboratory (INL). But the available public record does not establish a large-scale commercial facility or independently verify the company’s headline efficiency claims.
For builders, the central challenge is integration: the site, power supply, cooling loop, greenhouse climate controls, water systems and permitting must work as one project, even though each serves a different kind of operation.

What GeoBitmine is proposing
GeoBitmine LLC is an eastern Idaho company founded by Jay Jorgensen. Its concept brings together modular, containerized server infrastructure and hydroponic greenhouse production. The company describes the model as a way to put computing waste heat to use rather than reject it, while producing food close to local markets. Its website presents the concept and names other publicly identified team members, including Alicia Atkinson, Tommy Jorgensen and Aaron Symbolik.

How the proposed heat-reuse system works
Servers produce heat as they compute. In a liquid-cooling arrangement, a fluid absorbs some of that heat and carries it through a heat-transfer system to the greenhouse. There, heat can be released into the growing space or its heating system; the cooler fluid then returns toward the computing equipment. VentureBeat’s description outlines this general loop.
- Computing: Servers generate heat while operating.
- Collection: A cooling loop captures thermal energy from the server equipment.
- Transfer: A heat exchanger and circulation system move usable heat toward the greenhouse.
- Delivery: Greenhouse controls distribute heat as needed to maintain growing conditions.
- Return: Cooled fluid circulates back toward the data-center cooling system.
This is heat recovery, not free electricity. The computing operation still needs power for servers, pumps, fans, controls and networking, as well as any backup systems. The greenhouse receives thermal energy that might otherwise be rejected; that does not remove the data center’s electricity demand or guarantee that the recovered heat is available at the temperature and time the crops need it.
Why the two facilities might share a site
Data centers need to remove heat, while greenhouses in cold weather need heat. A nearby greenhouse could make some of the data center’s thermal output useful. Co-location may also reduce the distance over which heat must travel, although the suitable distance and system design depend on actual site conditions and engineering.
- Potential fit: Cold winters, a consistent source of computing heat, a nearby produce market and electricity at a viable cost.
- Site constraints: Utility capacity, water supply and discharge, land-use approvals, access, communications infrastructure and flood risk.
- Seasonal mismatch: The greenhouse can need heat in winter but cooling in summer, while computing equipment produces heat year-round.
- Operational separation: The greenhouse’s humidity and contaminants must be kept apart from the controlled environment required by electronics. A heat-transfer loop can move energy without relying on greenhouse air passing through server equipment.
A project therefore needs more than a heat source and a greenhouse next door. Designers need to match heat quality and flow to the greenhouse load, account for transfer losses and seasonal demand, and plan for heat rejection, thermal storage or supplemental heating where required. The available sources do not provide GeoBitmine’s detailed engineering design or measured operating data for these systems.

What is documented about the Idaho project
Public records show development activity, not proof of a completed commercial facility. In August 2024, Bingham County minutes recorded a request to energize data-center equipment for testing at a site near 767 North 900 East in Shelley, along with discussion of permitting and floodplain questions. The August minutes are evidence of a testing and review process; they do not establish full commercial operation.
Bingham County’s December 2024 minutes record discussions about potential project partners and letters of intent, with some discussions subject to nondisclosure agreements. Company representatives also discussed greenhouse construction alongside deployment of modular data-center facilities. Those minutes document plans and conversations, not signed customer commitments or a completed build.
INL’s March 20, 2025 feature describes its technical-assistance relationship with GeoBitmine, and its FY2025 technology-transfer report identifies work involving server-farm waste heat, hydroponic farming and land-use optimization. Technical assistance demonstrates engagement with a national laboratory; it is not, by itself, investment, certification or validation of every company performance claim.

From cryptocurrency mining to broader computing
GeoBitmine’s earlier regulatory history describes cryptocurrency mining paired with indoor farming. In 2022, the company sought reconsideration of an Idaho utility-rate decision involving high-capacity electricity use; its filing discussed a planned mining operation and indoor-farming concept. The petition and contemporaneous reporting provide that earlier context.

More recent company and INL descriptions use broader language such as server farms, modular data centers and high-performance computing. These terms are not interchangeable: Bitcoin mining is a particular computing workload, while data centers can host many kinds of computing. The distinction matters to project economics because revenues, operating schedules and exposure to market volatility depend on what computing activity actually runs. The available sources do not establish a final, current workload mix for a commercial facility.
What the sustainability numbers establish—and what they do not
GeoBitmine promotes potential gains in heat recovery, water use, land use and greenhouse operating costs. The figures below are company or media claims, not independently demonstrated performance results in the public sources cited here.
| Claim | What can be said from the available evidence |
|---|---|
| Up to 97% waste-heat recovery | GeoBitmine states this on its website. The public material cited here does not establish the measurement boundary, operating conditions or independently measured result. |
| 90%–99% water savings | The company’s website gives differing figures, and media coverage repeats a claim as high as 99%. The comparison basis and project-specific measurements are not established. See GeoBitmine’s website and Tech Times’ December 2024 article. |
| About 150,000 cubic feet of natural gas for a three-acre Idaho greenhouse | This is presented on the company website as an estimate, not as a documented measurement of a GeoBitmine operating greenhouse. |
| Three greenhouse acres compared with 65 acres of conventional farmland | This is the company’s land-use comparison. The cited public material does not establish it as an independently verified, like-for-like production analysis. |
| Carbon-free or net-zero operation | These are company descriptions. The sources cited here do not provide the electricity mix, accounting boundary or lifecycle analysis needed to verify them. |
Water efficiency also depends on what is counted. A fair assessment distinguishes water delivered to plants from water lost through evaporation and transpiration, discharged, reused after treatment, or used for cleaning, nutrient mixing and humidity control. Hydroponic recirculation can reduce some water losses, but the result depends on crop, climate, system design, sanitation and discharge practices.
Heat reuse likewise does not establish carbon neutrality. A greenhouse may need less separate fuel if it uses server heat, but the full system’s emissions also depend on the data center’s electricity source and demand, backup generation, equipment and greenhouse construction, cooling and dehumidification, packaging, refrigeration and delivery. Shorter food transport may be a benefit, but “local” alone does not prove lower total emissions.

Construction and operating questions that decide feasibility
Power and utility service
Computing’s electricity requirement is fundamental to the project. A site assessment needs to establish available capacity, service cost, interconnection requirements and any utility upgrades, as well as how demand charges and peak periods affect operation. GeoBitmine says its system could curtail energy use quickly and return capacity to the community during peaks; this should be treated as a proposed capability until supported by project-level operating and utility documentation.
Thermal design and controls
The design must account for server-loop temperatures and flow, greenhouse heating demand, the separation of the two environments, controls and backup heat. A high percentage of heat captured inside a data center would not alone demonstrate that enough useful heat reaches the greenhouse when needed. Seasonal storage, heat rejection, heat pumps or other supplemental systems may be part of a viable design, but the available sources do not establish which solution GeoBitmine will use.
Greenhouse operations
Hydroponic production requires its own water, nutrient, sanitation, humidity, cooling and food-safety systems. A reliable build also has to match crop choices and production schedules to labor, local demand and distribution. The sources reviewed do not establish a final crop plan, yield, customer agreement or produce-sales arrangement for the Shelley project.

The county’s floodplain discussion shows why site review is not a formality. A combined development may need approvals addressing land use, buildings, electrical service, water and wastewater, fire protection, noise, lighting and agricultural operations. Applicable requirements depend on the parcel and the authorities involved; the cited minutes do not establish that all approvals have been secured.

Why an integrated project can still be difficult to finance
GeoBitmine’s concept links the economics of computing and food production. The computing side may depend on electricity prices, utilization, equipment costs and the chosen workload. The farm side depends on construction and operating costs, crop performance, labor and sales. Recovered heat could improve the greenhouse’s energy position, but it does not automatically make either business profitable.
Before committing capital, a developer would need project-specific answers on power and interconnection costs, heat availability, greenhouse demand, crop-market capacity, water and wastewater, construction cost, financing and the allocation of operating risk between partners. The county record of prospective partners and letters of intent is not a substitute for executed agreements or operating results.
What would demonstrate that the model works at scale
The strongest evidence would come from an operating facility with transparent, independently reviewable measurements and commercial records. Useful proof points include:
- Construction, commissioning and operating status for both the data center and greenhouse.
- Measured server load, electricity use and the source of that electricity.
- Heat recovered and delivered, with temperature, flow, seasonal availability and system boundaries stated.
- Measured greenhouse fuel displacement, supplemental energy use and cooling demand.
- Water inputs, reuse, discharge and crop output measured under defined conditions.
- Crop yields, sales arrangements and operating costs over a meaningful period.
- Utility, permitting and partner agreements relevant to the specific site.
- Lifecycle accounting that includes computing, construction, greenhouse operations and food distribution.
Until such evidence is public, the most supportable description is that GeoBitmine is pursuing a documented development and testing effort, with technical assistance from INL, rather than that it has proved a scalable, carbon-free commercial model.
