To request access, update the Google Home app to version 4.0 or later, open your profile, choose Home settings > Early access, and wait for an in-app notification. Google says the core assistant upgrade is included with the device; advanced features such as Gemini Live and AI-powered camera tools require Google Home Premium.
What Gemini for Home changes
Google describes Gemini for Home as a more conversational assistant that keeps the “Hey Google” wake phrase. Its announced use cases include natural-language smart-home control, several actions in one request, media discovery, cooking help, appliance troubleshooting and follow-up questions. For example, Google demonstrates requests to control lights and temperature together, turn off lights except in one room, and ask, “My dishwasher isn’t draining, what should I check first?” These are Google’s published examples, not independent performance tests. Read the launch announcement at Google’s Gemini for Home announcement.
During early access, Google says the voice assistant on an enrolled device is upgraded from Google Assistant to Gemini. You can also say “Hey Google, let’s chat” to start Gemini Live when that feature is enabled for your account.
How to request early access
- Install or update the Google Home app to version 4.0 or later.
- Tap your profile icon.
- Open Home settings.
- Select Early access and follow the enrollment instructions.
- Wait for Google’s in-app notification confirming that access is ready.
Enrollment does not guarantee immediate activation: Google is releasing access in stages. If you do not see the Early access option, check the app version, account, home configuration and regional availability, then try again later. Google’s October 2025 instructions are documented in its launch post.

Do you need a new speaker?
No. Google says existing speakers and smart displays are part of the Gemini for Home plan, but the reviewed announcements do not provide a complete model-by-model compatibility list. Check Google’s current eligibility information for your exact device before assuming that a legacy Nest speaker or display will be upgraded.
Google also announced a dedicated Google Home Speaker, built for Gemini for Home. The June 17, 2026 announcement gave a launch price of $99.99 and a June 25, 2026 shelf date. Those are historical launch details, not a verified current price or stock status. The speaker is an option for adding hardware, not a stated prerequisite for early access. Details are in Google’s hardware announcement.
Use these checks before buying
- Confirm whether your current device model is eligible.
- Identify whether the feature you want is included or requires Google Home Premium.
- Compare the current price and capabilities of a new Google Home Speaker with upgrading the devices you already own.
- Check regional availability and language support at the time of purchase or enrollment.
Continued Conversation
Google’s April 21, 2026 update adds Continued Conversation. When enabled, the microphone remains active for a few seconds after the first answer so you can ask a follow-up without repeating the wake phrase. Google says household members and guests can use it across supported languages and regions. Enable it in Home Settings > Gemini for Home voice assistant > Continued Conversation. Read the announcement at Google’s Continued Conversation article.
