Yes—Gemini for Home can control compatible lights, plugs, thermostats, locks, cameras, speakers, displays, and other devices already connected to Google Home. However, Google is still rolling the feature out by country, language, account, and device. Basic smart-home control does not require a subscription, but some advanced features do. Most importantly, Google says that upgrading a home from Google Assistant to Gemini for Home cannot be undone.
What Google’s Gemini smart-home upgrade actually is
“Gemini” can refer to several related Google products, and they do not all work identically.

- Gemini for Home voice assistant: the replacement for Google Assistant on compatible Google Home and Nest speakers and displays.
- Gemini features in the Google Home app: tools such as conversational device control, home-status questions, automation creation, and AI-powered camera features.
- Smart-home control in the Gemini mobile app: a separate experience whose availability and supported actions should not be assumed to match the speaker-and-display assistant.
Google describes Gemini for Home as a broader upgrade to the assistant, the Google Home app, cameras, and doorbells—not simply a new wake word or a more conversational version of the old interface. Google’s announcement explains the overall Gemini for Home rollout.

Usually, yes, provided those devices already work with Google Home. Gemini is primarily an intelligence and interaction layer. It does not automatically make an incompatible bulb, switch, thermostat, lock, or camera compatible.

Google says Gemini for Home can work with devices from thousands of brands that support Google Home. To check a manufacturer integration:
- Open the Google Home app.
- Tap Add.
- Tap Link apps or services.
- Tap Works with Google.
- Search for the manufacturer or service.
If the partner does not appear, the service is likely not compatible with that Google Home setup. Google’s partner-linking instructions provide the current account-linking process.
A device appearing in Google Home does not necessarily mean every operation is available. Some integrations expose status but not control, or support only a limited set of commands.

Matter and Works with Google Home are different
Matter is a standards-based connection supported for selected device categories. Works with Google Home generally refers to a manufacturer-linked integration, which may depend on the vendor’s cloud service. Gemini sends the request through Google Home in either case.
A failure may therefore be caused by a manufacturer outage, expired account link, Wi-Fi problem, Matter border-router issue, unsupported device type, or missing device capability—not necessarily by Gemini misunderstanding you. Google’s compatible-device directory lists current device and Matter support.
What types of smart-home devices can Gemini control?
Depending on the device and integration, Google Home supports:
- Lights, bulbs, switches, dimmers, and plugs
- Thermostats and temperature sensors
- Cameras and doorbells
- Speakers, smart displays, Chromecast, and Google TV devices
- Sensors and other compatible home devices
- Locks and selected security products
- Supported Matter devices
The exact control set belongs to the device integration. Gemini may understand “lock the back door,” for example, but cannot perform that action if the lock service does not expose it to Google Home or if account permissions prevent it.

What is better than Google Assistant?
The practical difference is intended to be more natural interaction rather than a sudden expansion of what every device can do. Gemini is designed to understand conversational wording, room context, follow-up questions, and multiple actions in one request.
Examples you can try include:
- “Turn off all lights except the kitchen.”
- “Which lights are on?”
- “Turn down the thermostat two degrees.”
- “Turn off the downstairs plugs.”
- “Dim the living-room lights and turn on the hallway light.”
- “Is the front door locked?”
- “What devices are on right now?”
The first two examples are specifically documented by Google. The others are representative examples, and success depends on your device types, room assignments, names, integrations, permissions, and current rollout. Gemini’s language understanding does not override those limitations.
Where Gemini for Home is available
Google’s current early-access list includes Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Mexico, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, and the United States.
Supported languages vary by country. In the United States, Google lists English and Spanish. A listed country does not guarantee immediate access to every account because the rollout remains gradual and may depend on account, home, device, and feature eligibility. Check Google’s current availability and compatibility page before enrolling.

- Google Nest Hub, 2nd generation
- Google Nest Audio
- Google Nest Mini, 2nd generation
- Google Nest Hub Max
- Google Nest Hub, 1st generation
- Google Home Mini, 1st generation
Google also lists the Nest Wifi point, Google Home Max, original Google Home, and third-party speakers as supporting most Gemini for Home features, but not Gemini Live.
The minimum first-party firmware requirements listed by Google are:
Rank #3
- Google Nest Hub 1st Gen H1A – 7-inch smart display with Google Assistant built in for hands-free help, smart home control, entertainment, and daily organization.
- Korean Spec Model – International/Korean version of the Google Nest Hub H1A. Language can be changed to English after setup through the Google Home app/device settings.
- Smart Home Control – Use voice commands or the touchscreen to control compatible smart lights, cameras, thermostats, plugs, speakers, and other Google Assistant devices.
- Entertainment & Daily Help – Stream music, watch videos, view Google Photos, check weather, set timers, manage reminders, follow recipes, and get answers hands-free.
- Compact 7" Display Design – Great for kitchens, bedrooms, desks, offices, counters, and nightstands with a clean modern smart display design.
- Speakers: Cast firmware 3.76 or higher
- Displays: Fuchsia firmware 28 or higher
Basic Gemini controls and Gemini Live are not the same thing. Older hardware may support ordinary voice control without supporting Gemini Live.

Before opting in, read the reversal warning below. Then:
- Update the Google Home app from your device’s app store.
- Open Google Home.
- Tap your profile picture or account initial.
- Tap Home settings.
- Tap Early Access.
- Request early access if the option is available.
When your home is eligible, Google may show an Introducing Gemini for Home notification. Tap Get started and follow the enrollment prompts. An available-home banner may also appear under Home settings.
Android users may need to update Speech Recognition and Synthesis. Google’s setup guidance covers the current enrollment flow. Google’s June 2026 release notes identify version 4.18 of the Google Home app for listed improvements and rollout activity, but use the newest version available rather than treating 4.18 as a permanent minimum.
The upgrade affects the whole home
After enrollment, Gemini for Home becomes available to everyone in the home. Compatible devices added later use Gemini, and devices that become compatible later may switch automatically.

Google says the home cannot switch back to Google Assistant after the upgrade. That makes this an early-access decision, not a harmless toggle. If your existing Assistant setup is dependable and you rely on a command or integration that is important to you, wait until you are comfortable with the compatibility and feature limitations.
Ask Home in the Google Home app
Ask Home provides a conversational way to control devices, check the state of the home, search supported camera activity, and create automations.
To set it up:
- Open the Google Home app.
- Tap the Search bar.
- Read and acknowledge the Gemini for Home disclosures.
- Tap Next.
- Tap Get started.
Basic quick searches and simple device queries are available without Premium. More advanced camera and automation functions depend on Google Home Premium and regional rollout.
Free features versus Google Home Premium
Google’s current comparison information lists ordinary smart-home controls, answers, alarms, timers, calendar functions, notes, lists, reminders, media search and playback, and Continued Conversation among the basic capabilities available without a subscription.

Google Home Premium requirements vary by country, plan, device, and rollout. Google says Gemini camera features—including AI descriptions, AI notifications, a daily Home Brief, and camera-history search—are rolling out to Google Home Premium Advanced subscribers. They are intended for adult home administrators and supported Nest cameras set up in Google Home, including eligible legacy cameras transferred into the app. See Google’s camera-feature requirements and Premium feature information.

If you already own Google Home equipment
Keep your existing hardware if you mainly want natural-language control of lights, plugs, thermostats, routines, and media. Google lists support reaching back to the original Google Home Mini, first-generation Nest Hub, original Google Home, and other older products.
Consider new hardware only if you want a screen, better placement, newer microphones or speakers, or eligibility for a feature your current device lacks—especially Gemini Live. Do not replace a working speaker solely to obtain basic Gemini controls.
If you are building a new system
- Nest Mini, 2nd generation: a compact voice endpoint for smaller rooms.
- Nest Audio: a larger speaker-oriented option.
- Nest Hub, 2nd generation: voice control plus a screen for status, media, routines, and household information.
- Nest Hub Max: a larger-screen, camera-oriented experience.
- Google Home Speaker (2026): Google’s newer hardware designed for the Gemini era.
Use Google’s official Google Store for current availability. A Nest camera or doorbell makes Premium Advanced more relevant only if you specifically want AI descriptions, notifications, history search, or related security features.
When Google AI Pro makes sense
Google lists Google AI Pro at $19.99 per month in the United States, including 5 TB of storage and Google Home Premium Standard. Google AI Ultra includes Google Home Premium Advanced. Prices and benefits can change by country and plan.
AI Pro is worth considering for someone who also wants Google’s broader Gemini access and storage. It is not an obvious smart-home-only purchase; compare it with the current standalone Google Home Premium price in your country. AI Ultra is similarly excessive unless its wider AI bundle is valuable to you. See Google’s current plan details.

Troubleshooting common problems
The Gemini option is missing
- Update the Google Home app.
- Confirm that you are signed into the correct Google account and home.
- Check that your country and language are supported.
- Check speaker or display firmware.
- Look under Home settings > Early Access.
- On Android, update Speech Recognition and Synthesis.
Even after these checks, access may not appear immediately because Google is rolling it out gradually.
A device appears but will not respond
Verify that it is online, assigned to the correct room, and linked to the correct manufacturer account. The integration may support status but not control, or the specific action may not be exposed to Google Home. Re-linking the service may help if the account connection expired.
Gemini chooses the wrong device
Use unique names and explicit rooms. Replace “Turn off the lamp” with “Turn off the desk lamp in the office.” Likewise, say “Set the upstairs thermostat to 68 degrees” rather than using a duplicated device name.
The command works in the app but not by voice
Check the speaker’s account and home, internet connection, endpoint support, Voice Match settings, parental controls, and account permissions. Some operations are available in the app but not on every voice endpoint.
Privacy and household considerations
Gemini for Home processes voice requests and household context as part of the service. Google says it does not train generative AI models outside Google Home with users’ personal data, but households should still review the disclosures shown during setup.
Before enrolling, decide who has administrator access, which household members can use the assistant, whether children should have unrestricted responses, and how device history and recordings should be retained. Camera AI deserves additional care because it analyzes recordings and activity histories. Google’s disclosures and Premium guidance should be reviewed before enabling those features.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Is Gemini for Home worth switching to?
For an existing Google Home owner, Gemini is a reasonable upgrade if you want more conversational commands and multi-step requests, your devices already work reliably with Google Home, and you accept early access plus the permanent switch away from Assistant.
It is a weaker choice if your current setup is mission-critical, you depend on obscure integrations, you need predictable behavior above all else, or other household members do not want the change. Basic control is free, so a subscription is unnecessary unless you want Premium features such as Gemini Live where eligible, advanced automations, or AI-powered camera capabilities.
Google says optimizations can make some smart-home commands up to 1.5 seconds faster. That is Google’s claim, not an independent measurement. The more important benefit is broader language understanding—not universal device compatibility.
If Gemini’s limitations are a poor fit, households already invested in Echo devices may prefer Alexa, Apple-centered homes may prefer Apple Home and HomePod, and technically experienced users who prioritize local control may investigate Home Assistant. These are alternative paths, not automatic upgrades over Google Home.
