Start with a few suitable seeds or seedlings, a container that drains, and household items for gentle watering. Salad greens, herbs, and radishes are practical choices, but follow the seed packet or plant tag for your crop’s depth, spacing, sunlight, and harvest timing.
Choose a small, suitable place to grow
Many vegetables grow in containers on patios, porches, balconies, and windowsills. Lettuce and other salad greens, herbs, radishes, tomatoes, and peppers are among the possibilities; the right crop depends on available light, container size, variety, and local conditions. A few greens or herbs are an easy first project because you can sow a small amount and see how the space performs. Oregon State University Extension’s container-growing guide offers examples, not a universal planting calendar. Check local planting guidance as well as the packet or tag for your variety.
Pick a container that can drain
A suitable planter is more important than a garden tool. It needs enough room for the crop’s roots and drainage so excess water can escape. For containers, Oregon State University Extension recommends potting mix rather than heavy garden soil; its container gardening basics explains the considerations.
You can reuse a clean household vessel, such as an appropriate tub or carton, if it is sturdy, large enough for the crop, and can drain. A purpose-made planter may already have a useful shape and drainage, but either option can work when it meets the plant’s needs. If a reused vessel needs drainage holes, make them safely: avoid creating sharp edges, and do not use a container that cannot be prepared safely. Sow seeds with your hands
A trowel is not essential for a small container. Use your fingers to loosen the surface, then make a hole or shallow furrow at the depth specified on the seed packet. Place seeds at the packet’s recommended spacing, cover them with mix, and press lightly. Seed sizes and sowing instructions differ, so there is no single depth or spacing that suits every crop. If you prefer not to start from seed, a young plant is another option. Follow its tag for spacing, sunlight, and planting instructions. Direct sowing avoids handling a transplant; a transplant can be a convenient alternative when you want to begin with an established plant.

Water gently and check the mix
After sowing, water slowly with a clean cup, bottle, or watering can, aiming at the soil rather than pouring hard onto the seeds. Gentle watering helps keep newly sown seeds from being washed out of place. Hand watering is a straightforward alternative to installing irrigation.
Once plants are growing, check the mix rather than watering on a fixed schedule. When it is dry, water slowly and deeply. Container mix can dry quickly, so check it regularly, especially in warm or sunny conditions. Oregon State University Extension’s Growing Your Own and its May 2025 Watering Basics provide watering guidance. Drip or soaker systems may be more convenient for a larger setup, but they require equipment and installation.

Harvest in a way that suits the crop
Use the packet or plant tag to judge when a crop is ready. For salad greens, Oregon State University Extension recommends cutting the outside leaves while they are young; the plant can then produce another harvest. Use clean fingers to pinch tender herb leaves or stems where the plant’s growth habit allows, and avoid pulling up the whole plant unless that is how the crop is meant to be harvested. Regrowth is crop-dependent, so do not assume every vegetable will produce another picking after harvest. See the Extension Container Gardening Basics for the salad-greens example.

Hands and household items can handle many small gardening jobs, but tools are optional—not something to avoid at the expense of safety or comfort. A small scoop can help with a deep or cramped container; a watering can may be easier to control than a cup; and adapted or longer-handled tools may make gardening more comfortable if bending or gripping is difficult. Choose only what solves a real problem for your space, crop, or access needs.
