Does Aspirin Strengthen Flowers? What Gardeners Should Know

Aspirin is not a dependable flower-care hack. Here’s what extension guidance says to use in vases—and why garden disease calls for diagnosis, not aspirin.

No: household aspirin is not a proven way to strengthen garden flowers, prevent plant disease, or keep cut flowers fresh. For a vase, use commercial floral preservative as directed—or clean water without additives. For a garden plant showing symptoms, identify the problem and choose a treatment recommended for it.

Does aspirin help cut flowers last longer?

Extension guidance advises against adding aspirin to vase water. The University of Kentucky Cooperative Extension Service says repeated scientific testing found that aspirin does not prolong cut-flower life and may shorten it. A controlled rose study points in the same direction, though its results apply to the tested roses and conditions rather than every flower arrangement.

In growth-chamber experiments involving six rose cultivars, aspirin and active-agent treatments averaged 4.5 days of vase life. Commercial flower food averaged 9.6 days, while roses in untreated tap water averaged 7.4 days. The study also reported dried and later necrotic leaves in treated roses and little bud development. These are findings from that experiment, not a promise about how long roses—or other flowers—will last at home. FAO AGRIS indexes the study, published in Acta Horticulturae in 2012.

A 2003 study of cut Rosa hybrida ‘Red Sandra’ found higher ornamental value early in some treatment groups, followed by faster aging and wilting after three to six days. Its findings concern one cultivar and specific treatments; they are not a home-use recipe. The abstract also cautions that high concentrations can damage flowers. The study is indexed by the Korea Citation Index.

Why aspirin is not the same as flower food

Aspirin is acetylsalicylic acid; salicylic acid is a related but distinct compound. Findings about one compound in a controlled plant treatment cannot be treated as proof that a household aspirin mixture will benefit flowers.

Commercial floral preservatives are formulated for cut flowers. Depending on the product, their ingredients can acidify water, discourage or kill bacteria, reduce respiration, and provide sugar. Use the product according to its label; do not substitute an aspirin tablet or guess at a concentration.

What to put in a vase instead

Option When to use it What to do
Commercial floral preservative When you have a preservative intended for cut flowers and can follow its label directions. Prepare it as directed. University of Kentucky Extension advises using preservative with warm water.
Clean water without additives When you do not have floral preservative. Use clean water and maintain the arrangement; Iowa State Extension recommends skipping household substitutes.

Iowa State Extension’s cut-flower guidance, last reviewed in January 2025, says aspirin, sugar, tea, pennies, rusty nails, bleach, mouthwash, citric acid, and other household ingredients do not work as well as floral preservative; some can shorten vase life. Its advice is straightforward: “If you don’t have a floral preservative – skip it – clean water without additives is second best.” Read Iowa State’s cut-flower care guidance.

How to help cut flowers stay fresh

  1. Start with clean tools and a clean vase. Use a sharp, clean knife or shears so stems are cut cleanly rather than crushed.
  2. Harvest when blooms are hydrated. For garden flowers, this is often early morning. Put stems in water promptly.
  3. Prepare the stems. Remove leaves that would sit below the waterline, then place the flowers in clean water or properly mixed floral preservative.
  4. Keep the arrangement cool. Avoid freezing temperatures.
  5. Maintain the water. Replace it when it becomes cloudy or low, and use preservative according to its directions if you are using one.

These steps come from Iowa State University Extension and Outreach’s guide to harvesting and caring for cut flowers.

Does aspirin in soil prevent plant disease?

Do not use aspirin in soil as a general disease-prevention remedy. In a University of Florida IFAS Extension Q&A about bringing plants indoors, the author said they could not find research supporting aspirin in soil to prevent disease. That statement describes the status reported in that answer; it is not a claim that no relevant research could exist anywhere. The Q&A was posted July 18, 2017, and updated February 28, 2022. Read the UF/IFAS aspirin-in-soil answer.

If a plant looks unhealthy, identify the actual cause before treating it. Symptoms can have different causes, and an unverified aspirin treatment does not replace diagnosis or a recommended remedy. An Ask Extension expert response on aspirin, dated June 5, 2024, likewise addresses the question of aspirin as a plant treatment.
