Why Your Furnace Is Running but Not Blowing Hot Air: 11 Causes, Fixes, and Cost Checks

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If your furnace is running but the air coming from the vents is cold, weak, or only lukewarm, start with the simple checks first: thermostat mode, fan setting, batteries, breaker, furnace switch, filter, registers, return grilles, fuel supply, and exterior vent openings. Those items take about 5 minutes and solve a surprising share of no-heat calls.

But do not keep resetting a furnace that will not ignite, smells like gas, trips breakers, produces soot, or sets off a carbon monoxide alarm. Gas and oil furnaces can produce carbon monoxide, which is invisible, odorless, and potentially fatal. On our job sites, we treat any combustion warning as a stop-work issue, not a comfort complaint.

This guide separates homeowner-safe checks from licensed HVAC work, explains the 11 most common reasons a furnace stops blowing hot air, and gives 2026 cost ranges so you can judge a repair quote with a clear head.

Start Here: Match the Symptom Before You Guess

“Furnace not blowing hot air” can mean several different things. The right fix depends on what the system is actually doing.

  • No air from the vents: Possible blower motor, capacitor, control board, door switch, breaker, service switch, or thermostat issue.
  • Air blows, but it is cold: Possible thermostat setting, fan set to ON, ignition failure, flame sensor, gas supply, pilot, pressure switch, or condensate problem.
  • Burner lights, then shuts off: Often a dirty flame sensor, poor grounding, gas pressure issue, blocked vent, limit switch, or control fault.
  • Air is warm near the furnace but cold in rooms: Look for duct leakage, disconnected ducts, closed dampers, blocked returns, poor insulation, or zoning issues.
  • Heat works briefly, then stops: Short cycling can come from restricted airflow, overheating, bad sizing, dirty burners, failed sensors, or an aging furnace.

Before you turn power off, look through the furnace viewing window and photograph the blinking LED fault code if there is one. Many furnaces erase diagnostic history when power is cycled. That photo can save a technician time and may save you a second service visit.

Stop and Call Now If You See These Warning Signs

Do not troubleshoot further if any of these are present:

  • Gas odor, rotten-egg smell, or suspected propane leak
  • Carbon monoxide alarm sounding or recent CO alarm history
  • Soot around the furnace, burners, draft hood, or supply registers
  • Yellow, lazy, or rolling burner flames instead of steady blue flames
  • Burnt electrical smell, melting plastic smell, or visible arcing
  • Repeated breaker trips after reset
  • Water leaking onto furnace electronics
  • Suspected cracked heat exchanger
  • Exhaust smell inside the house

If you smell gas, leave the house, avoid operating switches or phones inside, and call the gas utility or emergency services from outside. If a CO alarm sounds, get everyone into fresh air and call emergency services. A furnace repair bill is secondary to life safety.

The 5-Minute Homeowner Checklist

Work in this order. It keeps you out of the dangerous parts of the equipment and checks the most common causes first.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Set the thermostat to HEAT. Raise the setpoint 5 degrees above room temperature.
  2. Set the fan to AUTO. ON can make the blower run even when the burners are off, which feels like cold air.
  3. Replace thermostat batteries. Weak batteries can cause short calls for heat or no call at all.
  4. Check the breaker and furnace service switch. The switch often looks like a regular wall switch near the furnace.
  5. Reseat the blower door panel. A loose door can open the safety switch and stop the furnace.
  6. Check the filter. Replace it if dirty, clogged, wet, collapsed, or installed backward.
  7. Open supply registers and return grilles. Move rugs, furniture, curtains, boxes, and storage at least several inches away.
  8. Confirm fuel supply. Make sure the gas valve is parallel with the pipe, or confirm propane/oil tank level.
  9. Check exterior intake and exhaust pipes. High-efficiency furnaces often use PVC pipes outdoors. Keep them clear of snow, leaves, nests, mulch, and ice.

If the furnace still does not heat after these steps, stop resetting it and call a licensed HVAC contractor. Repeated resets can mask the real fault and, in some cases, create an unsafe ignition condition.

2026 Furnace Repair Cost Checkpoints

Costs vary by market, access, furnace type, part availability, after-hours timing, and whether the contractor applies the diagnostic fee to the repair. Use these as budget checkpoints, not promises.

Repair or Service Typical 2026 U.S. Range DIY or Pro?
Diagnostic/service call $75-$200; emergency visits often higher Pro
Annual furnace tune-up $150-$200 nationally; some local specials $89-$150 Pro
Standard filter replacement $1-$35 for many disposable filters; specialty media costs more DIY
Thermostat repair or replacement $100-$600 depending on model and wiring DIY for simple battery models; pro for wiring
Ignitor replacement $150-$500 Pro
Flame sensor service or replacement $150-$250 commonly; some markets $75-$350 Pro recommended
Gas valve replacement $200-$600 commonly; some markets $700-$1,000 Licensed pro only
Blower motor replacement Often several hundred dollars; ECM variable-speed motors can exceed $1,000 installed Pro
National furnace repair total Broadly $64-$1,475; many common repairs land in the low-to-mid hundreds Depends on cause

For major parts such as a blower motor, control board, inducer motor, gas valve, heat exchanger, or full furnace replacement, get at least two quotes unless the situation is unsafe or the weather makes delay unreasonable.

11 Reasons Your Furnace Is Not Blowing Hot Air

1. The Thermostat Is Set Wrong or Has Weak Batteries

The thermostat is the command center. If it is set to COOL, OFF, ECO, vacation mode, or a low heating setpoint, the furnace may never receive a proper call for heat. Smart thermostats add another layer: schedules, occupancy sensing, app settings, Wi-Fi outages, and common-wire issues can all create confusing symptoms.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Set the system to HEAT, raise the setpoint 5 degrees, and wait 3 to 5 minutes. Replace batteries if your thermostat uses them. If the thermostat screen is blank, flickering, or rebooting, the problem may be batteries, low-voltage wiring, a tripped float switch, transformer failure, or a control board issue.

A basic thermostat swap can be straightforward, but smart thermostats are different. If there is no C-wire, if the old wiring colors do not match the terminals, or if you have a heat pump, dual-fuel system, humidifier, zoning board, or multi-stage furnace, hire a pro. Thermostat work commonly runs about $100-$600 depending on the device and wiring changes.

2. The Fan Is Set to ON Instead of AUTO

This is one of the easiest explanations for a furnace blowing cold air. When the fan is set to ON, the blower runs continuously, even between heating cycles. During those off-cycle periods, it moves room-temperature air through the ducts. That can feel like the furnace is cooling the house.

Set the fan to AUTO. In AUTO, the blower runs when the furnace is actively heating or during the designed blower delay after burner operation.

  • WASHABLE: Rinse with low pressure water, allow to dry and reinstall.
  • PERFORMACE: Proper balance of Air Flow and Performance
  • DESIGNED TO FIT: Many brand name furnaces / air conditioners - Measure existing filter and cut to fit.

A short burst of cool air at startup can be normal. Many modern furnaces delay blower operation, but some duct systems still push cool duct air into the rooms for the first minute or two. Cold air after the ignition cycle, or cold air that never warms up, is not normal.

3. The Air Filter Is Dirty, Clogged, Wet, or Installed Backward

A dirty filter restricts airflow. Restricted airflow can make the furnace overheat, trip the high-limit switch, shut the burners down, and leave the blower moving cool air. In worse cases, it contributes to blower motor strain, cracked heat exchanger risk, and early equipment failure.

Check filters monthly during heavy heating and cooling seasons. Replace dirty filters, and do not go longer than 3 months on a standard disposable filter unless your system and filter cabinet are designed for longer service intervals. Many 1-inch filters cost $1-$35, while specialty media filters cost more.

Use the correct size printed on the old filter or cabinet. Install it with the airflow arrow pointing toward the furnace or air handler. Do not stack filters unless the system was designed for it. High-MERV filters can improve filtration, but if the ductwork and blower cannot handle the pressure drop, they can reduce airflow. On remodels, we often see fine drywall dust plug filters quickly, so filters may need replacement after days, not months.

4. Supply Registers or Return Grilles Are Closed or Blocked

Furnaces need a balanced path for air to leave and return. Closed supply registers, blocked returns, heavy rugs, furniture, storage boxes, and dust-packed grilles can reduce airflow enough to make the furnace cycle poorly.

Open most registers fully, especially in rooms far from the furnace. Keep return grilles unobstructed. If a return is in a hallway, do not block it with a cabinet or door. A furnace closet also needs proper combustion air and service clearance. As a practical rule, keep about 3 feet of clear working space around the furnace where the room allows and never store paint, solvents, paper goods, or gasoline nearby.

If some rooms stay cold even with open registers, the issue may be duct design, duct leakage, insulation, dampers, or zoning, not the furnace itself.

5. The Furnace Has Not Warmed Up Yet

A furnace is not always instant heat. The inducer motor starts first, safety checks occur, the ignitor warms or sparks, the gas valve opens, burners light, and then the blower starts after a delay. Depending on the model, you may feel cool or neutral air briefly before the duct temperature rises.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Give the furnace one full cycle, usually 5 to 10 minutes. If the air becomes warm and the house temperature rises, the system may be operating normally. If the blower runs for 10 minutes and the air never warms, move on.

Heat pumps and dual-fuel systems need special attention. A heat pump can deliver air that feels cooler than gas furnace air even when it is heating properly. If auxiliary heat is not coming on during very cold weather, the house may feel cold even though the outdoor unit is running.

6. A Breaker, Service Switch, or Blower-Door Switch Is Interrupting Power

A furnace usually has more than one power interruption point: the electrical panel breaker, a service switch near the unit, and a blower-door safety switch. If any one is off or open, the furnace may not run correctly.

Check the breaker once. If it is tripped, reset it one time. If it trips again, stop. Repeated trips point to an electrical fault, motor problem, short, water intrusion, or control failure. That is pro work.

  • CERTIFIED: This furnace filter is CERTIFIED asthma and allergy-friendly (2) and helps capture dust, lint and other allergens in your household air

Make sure the furnace service switch is on. Then reseat the blower compartment door. Many furnaces will not run if the panel is not fully latched because the door switch remains open.

7. The Gas Valve Is Off, the Propane/Oil Tank Is Empty, or Fuel Delivery Is Interrupted

No fuel means no flame. On a natural gas furnace, check whether the manual gas shutoff valve is parallel with the pipe. Perpendicular usually means off. Do not force a stuck valve, and do not disassemble gas piping.

For propane or oil systems, confirm tank level and recent delivery history. Propane systems can lock out after running empty and may require leak checks or professional restart procedures. Oil systems can lose prime or clog filters/nozzles when the tank runs low.

Fuel delivery issues are licensed work. A technician may need to check gas pressure, regulator performance, manifold pressure, oil pump operation, nozzle condition, combustion quality, and venting. Gas valve replacement commonly runs $200-$600 nationally, with some markets and valve types reaching $700-$1,000.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

8. The Flame Sensor, Ignitor, or Pilot System Is Failing

If the furnace starts, lights briefly, and then shuts down, the flame sensor is a prime suspect. The flame sensor proves that the burners actually lit. If it is dirty, poorly grounded, cracked, or not reading properly, the control board closes the gas valve for safety.

Ignitors are also common failure points. A hot surface ignitor can crack or weaken over time. Spark ignition systems can fail from wiring, control, or grounding problems. Older standing-pilot furnaces may have a dirty pilot or failed thermocouple.

Although you may see online advice about cleaning flame sensors, we recommend treating repeated flame failures as diagnostic work. A technician should measure flame-sensor microamps, verify grounding, inspect burner carryover, check gas pressure, and confirm combustion. Flame sensor service or replacement often costs $150-$250. Ignitor replacement commonly runs $150-$500.

9. A High-Efficiency Furnace Has a Condensate, Pressure Switch, or Venting Problem

Condensing furnaces usually vent through PVC intake and exhaust pipes and produce acidic condensate water. If the condensate drain clogs, the trap freezes, the pump fails, or the vent termination is blocked by snow, leaves, ice, or debris, the furnace may lock out before ignition or shut down mid-cycle.

Check exterior PVC intake and exhaust pipes from the ground if you can do so safely. Clear snow, leaves, or obvious debris around the pipe openings without damaging the pipes. Do not climb icy ladders or remove vent piping.

Pressure-switch and venting problems are not guesswork. The contractor should verify inducer operation, drain trap condition, vent slope, vent length, termination clearance, pressure switch tubing, and actual draft/pressure readings. This matters because venting is both a performance issue and a safety/code issue.

10. The Blower Motor, Capacitor, Control Board, or High-Limit Switch Has Failed

If burners light but little or no air comes from the vents, the blower side may be failing. Common causes include a bad run capacitor, failed PSC motor, failed ECM variable-speed motor, loose wiring, bad relay, failed control board, or a high-limit switch that has tripped or failed.

Homeowner clues include humming without airflow, a burning electrical smell, intermittent blower operation, weak airflow on all registers, or a furnace that heats briefly and then shuts the burners off. Do not keep running the furnace if you smell overheating electrical components.

Filtrete 16x25x5 Air Filter, Fits Lennox, MERV 11, MPR 1000, 2 HVAC Filters
  • DIFFERENT FROM NOMINAL SIZE: Slightly different from the nominal size, this air filter’s exact dimensions are 15.63 in x 24.74 in x 4.31 in, This item is a 2-pack of 12-month Filtrete Air Filters

  • CERTIFIED: This furnace filter is CERTIFIED asthma and allergy-friendly (2) and helps capture dust, lint and other allergens in your household air

A technician should measure voltage, motor amperage, capacitor microfarads, static pressure, temperature rise, and control-board outputs. Replacing a simple capacitor is far cheaper than an ECM blower module. A blower motor repair can land in the several-hundred-dollar range, while variable-speed ECM motors and modules can exceed $1,000 installed in some cases.

11. The Furnace Works, but the Ducts, Sizing, or Building Conditions Are the Real Problem

Sometimes the furnace is making heat, but the house is not receiving it. We see this often after remodels, basement finishing, attic work, room additions, door changes, and insulation upgrades. Construction dust can clog filters. New walls can block returns. New doors can change room pressure. Ducts can be crushed, disconnected, buried, or pulled loose by other trades.

Signs of a distribution problem include one cold room, a hot furnace room, weak airflow at distant registers, whistling returns, dusty duct joints, or a temperature drop between the plenum and the room. An oversized furnace can also short-cycle: it heats the plenum fast, shuts down fast, and never runs long enough to distribute comfort evenly.

Good diagnostics may include static pressure testing, duct leakage measurement, temperature-rise measurement, Manual J load review, duct sizing review, damper inspection, and thermal scanning. Do not replace a furnace just because one room is cold until the ductwork and building conditions have been checked.

Special Furnace Types Need Different Thinking

High-Efficiency Condensing Furnaces

Look for PVC intake/exhaust pipes, condensate drains, traps, and pumps. A blocked vent or drain can stop heat even when the thermostat and filter are fine. Venting changes may require code-aware correction, not a quick part swap.

Older Standing-Pilot Furnaces

These may have pilot, thermocouple, or burner cleanliness issues. Because older units may also have aging heat exchangers and draft problems, have combustion and venting checked rather than only relighting the pilot.

Electric Furnaces

Electric furnaces do not have gas valves, flame sensors, or combustion venting, but they do have sequencers, heat strips, relays, breakers, and blower components. Multiple breakers may feed the system. Repeated breaker trips are an electrical safety issue.

Heat Pumps and Dual-Fuel Systems

A heat pump may blow air that feels mildly warm, not hot. If outdoor temperatures are low and auxiliary heat is not working, the home may lose ground. Thermostat configuration is critical on dual-fuel systems because it controls when gas heat takes over.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Propane and Oil Systems

Fuel level, regulator performance, oil filter condition, nozzles, combustion setup, and tank history matter. Running a tank empty can create restart and safety procedures that go beyond a simple reset.

When to DIY vs. When to Hire a Pro

DIY is appropriate for thermostat settings, thermostat batteries, fan AUTO setting, filter replacement, opening registers, clearing visible exterior vent obstructions from the ground, checking the breaker once, reseating the blower door, and confirming that a fuel valve was not accidentally turned off.

Hire a licensed HVAC contractor for ignition problems, gas pressure testing, gas valve work, oil burner service, repeated flame-sensor faults, pressure-switch faults, inducer issues, combustion analysis, heat exchanger inspection, electrical smells, control-board diagnostics, blower motor replacement, high-limit issues, duct leakage testing, and venting changes.

Permits and inspections may be required for furnace replacement, gas piping modifications, vent changes, electrical circuit changes, and major duct alterations. Local rules vary, but a contractor who waves off permits on combustion equipment without explanation is not doing you a favor.

How to Review a Furnace Repair Quote

Before approving a major repair, ask for specifics. A good quote should tell you what failed, how the technician proved it, and what happens if that part does not solve the issue.

  • What diagnostic readings support the recommendation?
  • What is the part number, and is it OEM or universal?
  • Is the furnace still under manufacturer parts warranty?
  • What is the labor warranty?
  • Is the diagnostic fee included or separate?
  • Are after-hours, travel, or return-visit charges included?
  • Was combustion analysis performed on a gas or oil furnace?
  • Were gas pressure, temperature rise, and static pressure measured where relevant?
  • Is a permit or inspection required?
  • If the quoted part does not fix the issue, how is the next step handled?

Repair usually makes sense for a newer furnace with one clear failed part. Replacement becomes more rational when the furnace is near 15 to 20 years old, has repeated breakdowns, has a failed heat exchanger, is poorly sized, has unsafe venting, or needs a major repair that approaches a large share of replacement cost.

Prevention: Keep the Heat Reliable Before Winter

The cheapest furnace repair is the one you avoid. Check filters monthly during heavy-use seasons and replace dirty filters promptly. Schedule a professional furnace inspection before heating season, ideally in early fall before cold-weather demand spikes. Keep vents and returns open. Keep the furnace area clean and accessible. Test carbon monoxide alarms before winter, and place alarms according to manufacturer instructions and local code.

After remodeling, ask your contractor or HVAC technician to look at combustion air, return-air paths, duct damage, dust contamination, and vent clearances. On our construction projects, those details are part of making the finished space work, not loose ends to discover during the first cold night.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If your furnace is not blowing hot air after the safe checks, treat the remaining problem as a diagnostic sequence. The goal is not just to get heat back for tonight. The goal is to know whether the system is safe, properly vented, correctly controlled, and capable of heating the house without repeated breakdowns.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is my furnace blowing cold air when the thermostat is on heat?

Common causes include the fan being set to ON instead of AUTO, a dirty filter causing overheating, ignition failure, a dirty flame sensor, gas supply issues, or a high-efficiency furnace lockout from a blocked condensate drain or vent.

Is it normal for a furnace to blow cold air at startup?

A short period of cool or room-temperature air can be normal during startup because the furnace runs through safety checks before the blower delivers steady heat. Cold air that continues for more than one heating cycle is not normal.

What furnace checks are safe for a homeowner?

Safe checks include thermostat settings, thermostat batteries, fan AUTO mode, breaker reset once, furnace service switch, blower-door panel, filter condition, open registers and returns, fuel valve position, and clear exterior intake/exhaust openings.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When should I stop troubleshooting and call a professional?

Call immediately for gas odor, carbon monoxide alarm, soot, yellow or rolling flames, burnt electrical smell, repeated breaker trips, water near electronics, ignition failure, suspected heat exchanger issues, or any gas valve or venting problem.

How much does furnace repair cost in 2026?

A diagnostic visit commonly costs $75-$200. Many furnace repairs land in the low-to-mid hundreds, while national repair totals can range broadly from about $64 to $1,475 depending on the failed part, furnace type, labor rates, and emergency timing.

Should I repair or replace a furnace that is not heating?

Repair often makes sense for newer systems with one confirmed failed part. Replacement becomes more reasonable for furnaces near 15 to 20 years old, repeated breakdowns, heat exchanger failure, unsafe venting, poor sizing, or major repairs approaching a large share of replacement cost.
