Kalkreuth Roofing & Sheet Metal’s growth story is a progression from a family roofing business in Wheeling, West Virginia, to a broadly capable commercial building-envelope contractor. A Roofing Contractor profile published February 9, 2015, attributes that development to a 1920 family foundation, John Kalkreuth and Jim Hurley’s 1984 takeover, an early 1985 mall reroofing project, and a strategy built around engineering, sheet metal fabrication, skilled trades, and service after installation.
The profile’s “go-to building-envelope specialist” framing describes the company’s reported reputation at that time; it is not an independently audited ranking or a statement of its present-day size. The most useful way to understand the business is to examine how its capabilities expanded together: from roof installation into walls and enclosure systems, from field work into design coordination and fabrication, and from one-time projects into lifecycle maintenance.

What the 2015 profile actually establishes
Derrick Teal’s February 9, 2015, article in Roofing Contractor is a company profile, not a current corporate directory, market-share study, or independent performance audit. Its locations, territory, staffing numbers, and service descriptions should therefore be read as a snapshot of the business in 2015. The article does establish a coherent account of how the company presented its operating model and growth.
At that point, the profile described a contractor with offices in Wheeling, Columbus, Pittsburgh, Frederick, Maryland, and Lexington, Kentucky. It reported work across West Virginia, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia, Delaware, Kentucky, and Washington, D.C., while John Kalkreuth said the company could travel anywhere in the United States for an appropriate project and scope. Those statements describe the reach reported in the article, not a guarantee of current availability.

How a 1920 family business reached commercial scale
1920: the Wheeling foundation
The company traces its roots to 1920, when John Kalkreuth’s grandfather and his grandfather’s brother started a roofing company in Wheeling. The business remained in the family through successive generations. That origin matters because the later organization was not presented as a newly assembled national platform; it grew from a local trade operation with a long family connection to roofing.
1984: a new direction under two engineers
John Kalkreuth and Jim Hurley took over in 1984. Both were graduate engineers, and the profile describes them as bringing a deliberate vision for the company’s future. Their backgrounds help explain why the business later emphasized engineering coordination, manufacturer details, and systems that extend beyond conventional roof installation.
1985: Fort Steuben Mall becomes an early test
One of the first major steps came at Fort Steuben Mall in Steubenville, Ohio. Hurley recalled that the new owners began in November 1984 by taking small repair jobs, including work for the mall. In June 1985, the owners decided to reroof the mall, giving the young operation a substantial project during its first year. The account presents that job as an early growth milestone, not as evidence of a contract value or a particular technical specification; the profile provides neither.

What “building-envelope specialist” means in practice
A building envelope is the set of roof, wall, panel, flashing, and waterproofing elements that separates occupied space from weather. The profile portrays Kalkreuth as a contractor able to work across those connected systems rather than treating the roof as an isolated surface. That breadth is the reason the article’s headline moves from “roofing” to “building-envelope specialist.”
Roofing from low slope to steep slope
The listed portfolio included low- to steep-slope roofing, metal roofing, vegetative roofing, and photovoltaic roofing. A low-slope commercial roof and a steep-slope assembly have different drainage, detailing, access, and installation requirements. Metal roofing introduces panel joints, seams, penetrations, and attachment details. Vegetative roofing adds growing media and planted layers above the waterproofing system, while photovoltaic roofing requires coordination between the roof assembly and the solar installation. The profile names these applications but does not provide project-specific designs, manufacturers, warranties, or performance data.
Walls and insulated panels
Architectural insulated wall panels and metal wall systems extended the company’s work vertically. These systems can form part of a building’s thermal and weather barrier, so their interfaces with roofs, openings, structural supports, and flashings must be coordinated. The article identifies the capability; it does not claim that every office or crew performed every listed system on every project.
Waterproofing and exterior-envelope continuity
Waterproofing appears in the profile’s service list alongside roofing and sheet metal work. Including it in the same operating model reinforces the article’s emphasis on continuity: water management depends on transitions between roof membranes, metal edges, walls, penetrations, and other enclosure components.

Why engineering and fabrication were central to the model
In-house engineering and shop drawings
The company reported an in-house engineering department that prepared shop drawings and coordinated with computer-aided design. Its teams could blend an architect’s drawings with manufacturers’ details, a task that becomes important when a design must be translated into buildable roof, wall, and flashing assemblies. The article also says the company could assist with value engineering as projects changed. In this context, value engineering means helping adjust a design or assembly while considering constructability and cost; the profile does not quantify savings or identify a particular project outcome.
An extensive sheet metal shop
Sheet metal fabrication was described as an internal capability rather than an incidental service. A shop can produce or modify items such as flashings and other custom metal components to suit field conditions and project details. Keeping that work connected to engineering and installation can reduce handoffs, but the profile does not provide production capacity, equipment specifications, or turnaround times.
Manufacturer relationships without a named partner list
The article refers to relationships with manufacturers and to the use of manufacturers’ details in coordination with architectural drawings. It names no partner suitable for a current recommendation, and it gives no exclusive-dealer status. The evidence supports a description of coordinated technical work, not a claim that one brand or system is preferred.
What happened after installation: the lifecycle service promise
Kalkreuth’s reported service offering covered the roof’s life after construction. The 2015 profile lists inspections, repairs, replacements, restorations, sheet metal fabrication, and waterproofing. John Kalkreuth described the goal this way: “We want to be there for the customer when it’s time to service the roof as it goes through its life cycle.” That statement explains the intended relationship, but it does not establish response-time guarantees, maintenance-plan pricing, or current service availability.

For a building owner, the practical distinction is between a contractor that disappears after substantial completion and one that offers a path for assessing condition, correcting leaks or damaged details, restoring aging assemblies, and replacing systems when repair is no longer appropriate. The profile presents all of those categories as part of the company’s model, without assigning a standard sequence or claiming that every roof receives the same treatment.

Reported workforce in 2015
The profile reported about 300 roofers and 100 sheet metal workers at publication time. Those figures are attributed to the February 2015 article and should not be read as a current headcount. The article connects the ability to pursue large, geographically dispersed work to the quality and pride of this workforce.
Local operating units with shared corporate functions
Each office was described as its own profit center with its own service division and personnel. At the same time, an overarching corporate structure handled functions such as marketing, accounting, and information technology. That arrangement combines local accountability with shared administrative support. It also helps explain how the company could operate in several markets without presenting every office as an entirely separate contractor.

Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Retention, apprentices, and continuity
The profile describes efforts to retain employees through communication and events that included employees’ families. It also mentions apprentices who stayed with the company through retirement. These anecdotes are not a quantified retention study, but they show what management identified as a competitive advantage: experienced tradespeople who remain long enough to carry knowledge from one project to the next.

John Kalkreuth summarized that emphasis by saying, “What truly sets us apart is the quality of the workforce.” Jim Hurley expressed the customer standard as, “When we complete a job, we want our customers to feel that we always did the right thing by them.” The article also reports Kalkreuth’s observation that calls asking for the company, a project manager, or a foreman to return were “a sign of success.” These are leaders’ statements of values, not independently measured satisfaction scores.
Projects that illustrate the reported reach
The profile names projects and institutions in several major markets. It does not provide contract values, completion dates, detailed scopes, or technical specifications for them, so the examples are best used to show the range of settings rather than to rank performance.

How owners can use this story when evaluating an envelope contractor
The profile does not provide a universal checklist, but its operating model suggests concrete questions for an owner, architect, or construction manager. Asking these questions separates a contractor’s stated breadth from the resources assigned to a particular job:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Design coordination: Who prepares shop drawings, and how are architectural drawings reconciled with manufacturer details?
- Engineering support: Is engineering performed in-house for this project, and what decisions will that team own?
- Fabrication: Which sheet metal components can be fabricated internally, and how are field dimensions verified?
- System scope: Can one team coordinate the roof, wall panels, metal walls, flashings, and waterproofing transitions that affect one another?
- Lifecycle plan: What inspection, repair, restoration, or replacement services are available after substantial completion?
- Local execution: Which office and service personnel will be responsible, and how does corporate support reach the project team?
- Workforce continuity: Who will be the project manager and foreman, and what happens if a project requires a return visit?
These questions do not prove that a contractor is suitable by themselves. They turn the themes in the 2015 profile—engineering, fabrication, skilled labor, geographic coordination, and post-installation care—into items that can be confirmed in a current proposal and contract.
What the “sign of success” framing does and does not mean
In the source article, success is portrayed as sustained growth without abandoning the trade fundamentals of workmanship and customer responsibility. The narrative moves from a 1920 family company to a 1984 leadership transition, an early 1985 mall reroofing job, multiple offices, a wide commercial portfolio, and an explicit commitment to service after installation.
That is a compelling business story, but it has boundaries. The article supplies no audited revenue, market share, independently tested roof performance, current staffing count, current office list, contract values, or comparative ranking against other contractors. It also does not establish that every capability or territory reported in 2015 remains unchanged. Readers seeking a contractor today should verify licensing, insurance, references, current personnel, system qualifications, warranties, schedule, and service terms directly.
Within those limits, the profile’s central lesson is clear: Kalkreuth’s reported differentiation came from combining the trades and decisions that shape an entire enclosure. Roofing was the starting point; engineering, custom sheet metal, wall and panel systems, and lifecycle service formed the larger building-envelope model. That combination is why the article presents the company’s expansion from humble beginnings as a sign of success.
