Pollution exposure in Bengaluru is shaped by your daily route and surroundings, not only the city’s average air-quality reading. Doctors are now asking patients where they live and work, how long they spend in traffic, how they travel and whether construction is nearby. Traffic particles and construction dust can worsen lung disease and contribute to heart attack, stroke and pregnancy risks, especially in people with existing conditions. Reducing exposure, improving indoor filtration and giving clinicians a detailed exposure history can help manage risk, but no consumer device eliminates all outdoor pollution.
Why are Bengaluru doctors adding pollution to routine medical histories?
Doctors say a patient’s exposure depends on residence, workplace, commuting time and proximity to construction. Senior pulmonologist Dr Satish K S told the Times of India on 26 October 2026 that exposure is determined not just by where people live, but also by how much time they spend travelling and in traffic. A person living in a comparatively cleaner neighborhood may still receive a high dose during a long, congested commute.

Dr Gufran Beig, founder-director of SAFAR, noted that Bengaluru’s altitude may help pollutants disperse, but that does not mean less pollution is being generated. Citywide monitoring therefore cannot describe every individual’s exposure. Pollutant levels can differ between a roadside and a residential lane, between ground and upper floors, and across different times of day.
Former Jayadeva Institute director and Bengaluru Rural MP Dr CN Manjunath described air pollution as a “silent killer,” associating it with cardiovascular disease, stroke, respiratory illness and adverse pregnancy outcomes. Cardiovascular surgeon Dr Vivek Jawali warned that pollution spikes may destabilise arterial plaques in people with diabetes, obesity or established atherosclerosis, raising the risk of heart attack or stroke.

Can traffic pollution trigger a heart attack?
Yes. Traffic-related air pollution is a mixture of gases and particles from cars, buses and trucks. The US National Institutes of Health (NIH) identifies fine particulate matter (PM2.5) as small enough to travel deep into the lungs and links air pollution with respiratory, cardiovascular, reproductive, neurological and immune-system harm.
US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) guidance says particle pollution is consistently associated with cardiovascular death, myocardial infarction, arrhythmia, heart failure and ischemic stroke. It also links particle exposure with asthma exacerbations and acute bronchitis. Existing heart or lung disease increases concern because a pollution episode can add stress to already vulnerable organs.

A traffic jam can increase exposure through several pathways: emissions accumulate near slow-moving vehicles, people may spend longer beside busy roads, and open windows or poorly filtered vehicle cabins allow particles inside. The relevant measure for an individual is the concentration encountered and the time spent breathing it, not simply the distance from the city centre.
Does construction dust damage the lungs?
Construction activity can add airborne particles to an already polluted environment. Dust generated by demolition, excavation, cutting, drilling and movement of soil may irritate the airways; the health effect depends on particle size, material, concentration and duration of exposure. Fine particles are especially concerning because they can penetrate deep into the respiratory tract.

People living beside a work site, workers on the site, traffic police, delivery drivers and pedestrians who pass the site repeatedly may have different exposure patterns. Dust can also enter homes through open windows, balconies, doors and ventilation systems. Symptoms such as persistent cough, wheeze, breathlessness, chest tightness or worsening asthma should be discussed with a clinician rather than attributed automatically to “dust.”
Why can my personal exposure differ from the city AQI?
Air-quality indices are useful for broad public guidance, but a city monitor represents conditions at its own location and time. Your personal exposure can be higher or lower because of route, travel duration, traffic density, indoor ventilation, building floor and nearby sources such as construction.
Keep a simple exposure diary for several days if symptoms fluctuate. Record your commute, time spent outdoors, visible dust or smoke, workplace location, windows or filtration used indoors, and symptoms. A consumer PM2.5 monitor can show trends in a room, but its readings are not clinical measurements and should not be used to diagnose disease.
How should I tell my doctor about pollution exposure?
Give specific, practical details rather than saying only that you live in a polluted city. Mention:

Who should take extra precautions?
WHO evidence indicates that 99% of the world’s population lived in locations that did not meet its air-quality guideline levels in 2019. WHO estimated that combined household and ambient air pollution was associated with 6.7 million premature deaths annually, including 4.2 million attributed to ambient outdoor pollution; 89% of those ambient-pollution deaths occurred in low- and middle-income countries.
Children, pregnant people, older adults and anyone with heart or lung disease are generally more vulnerable. NIH also identifies reproductive, neurological and immune-system effects among the health concerns associated with air pollution. During visibly dusty or smoky periods, vulnerable people should reduce unnecessary outdoor exertion and follow their clinician’s asthma or cardiac action plan.

A properly sized high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) purifier can reduce indoor airborne particles, including PM2.5, when operated in the occupied room with doors and windows managed appropriately. NIH identifies filtration as an exposure-reduction measure, not a treatment for disease. Choose a unit rated for the room size, place it where air can circulate and replace filters according to the manufacturer’s schedule.

Filtration has limits: it does not remove every pollutant, does not control outdoor exposure during commuting, and cannot substitute for source control or medical care. Avoid creating new indoor pollution by keeping tobacco smoke and unnecessary combustion out of the home. If outdoor air is dusty, closing windows during peak periods while maintaining safe ventilation may reduce particle entry.
What practical steps reduce daily exposure?
- Map your routine. Identify the roads, junctions and construction zones where you spend the most time.
- Cut peak exposure. When feasible, choose less congested routes or travel times and shorten time waiting beside traffic.
- Control indoor air. Keep windows closed during nearby dust events and use a correctly sized HEPA purifier in occupied rooms.
- Protect vulnerable people. Move children, older adults, pregnant people and those with cardiopulmonary disease away from dusty outdoor activity when pollution is visibly high.
- Track symptoms and seek care. Share your exposure diary with a doctor and follow prescribed medicines; do not self-adjust treatment based only on an AQI or consumer sensor.
What remains uncertain about Bengaluru’s pollution risk?
The doctors’ warnings describe plausible and clinically important exposure pathways, but the cited report does not provide a Bengaluru PM2.5 or PM10 concentration series, a sample size or a city-specific exposure-response estimate. Individual risk therefore cannot be calculated from a headline AQI alone. The strongest established evidence comes from broader WHO, NIH and EPA findings showing that particulate and traffic pollution affect cardiovascular and respiratory health, with greater danger for people who are already vulnerable.

Can wearing a mask eliminate traffic-pollution exposure?
No mask blocks every pollutant or seals perfectly. A well-fitting, particle-filtering respirator can reduce inhaled particles during dusty commutes, but gases, leaks and exposure time still matter; ask a clinician about fit and suitability if you have breathing problems.
Should I exercise outdoors when Bengaluru air looks hazy?
Haze is an imperfect indicator, but strenuous exercise increases the volume of air inhaled. If conditions are visibly dusty or smoky, move vigorous exercise indoors or postpone it, particularly if you have asthma, heart disease or are pregnant.
Can indoor plants replace an air purifier?
Ordinary houseplants have not been shown to provide the controlled particle removal of a properly sized HEPA filtration system in a typical home. Source control, ventilation choices and filtration are more reliable exposure-reduction measures.
When is pollution-related chest pain an emergency?
Call emergency services for new or severe chest pressure, pain spreading to the arm or jaw, breathlessness at rest, fainting or sudden neurological symptoms. Do not wait for an air-quality reading to improve.
