Digital construction adoption in India should move beyond the country’s five to ten largest contracting companies, according to Mark Schwartz, Group President, AECO, at Trimble Inc. Smaller contractors, engineers and the wider architecture, engineering, construction and operations (AECO) ecosystem also need access to connected digital workflows. Schwartz argues that linking data across company sizes can make BIM, cost management and project delivery more seamless, while reducing duplicated work and potentially lowering labour costs. Those are his expected outcomes, not independently measured results reported here.
Why does Schwartz say adoption must go beyond the top construction firms?
Schwartz’s “top five to ten” description is a scale for the adoption gap, not a market-share statistic. His argument is that a project cannot become genuinely connected if only its largest participant works digitally while smaller subcontractors, consultants and engineers continue with disconnected files, manual handoffs or incompatible processes.

When information crosses organisational boundaries in a common workflow, the same model, quantities, changes and field information can be used by more of the project team. Schwartz links that continuity to more effective BIM, stronger cost control and better project outcomes. The benefits remain a strategic expectation in the interview rather than a quantified performance claim.
What does connected data mean in construction?
Connected data means that project information remains available, current and traceable as it moves from estimating and design through fabrication, site work and handover. It is more than putting files in the cloud: teams need agreed naming, versions, permissions, data requirements and responsibility for updating information.

Office-to-field continuity
A common-data environment can let office and site teams view the same models and documents, record issues and comments, and track which version is authoritative. Trimble describes Trimble Connect as a cloud environment for sharing files and models, with versioned information, comments, tasks, tags and issue management; its current product page lists support for more than 45 file types.
From design through delivery
Trimble’s current examples illustrate different parts of that chain. The company positions Construction One as a connected suite for general, steel, concrete, civil, architecture/design, mechanical and electrical contractors, with more than 40 interconnected solutions. Its broader construction directory includes project management, financial, estimating, BIM, Tekla, positioning and reality-capture tools.

How can smaller construction companies adopt digital solutions?
Schwartz’s approach starts with a business case and a shared operating method, rather than buying the largest possible software package. A smaller firm can reduce risk by selecting one repeatable workflow, defining the information it must exchange with partners, and measuring whether the change removes re-entry, delay or rework.

- Both tools are designed to fit into difficult to reach spaces
- Complete a wide range of applications with a high-performance motor that delivers up to 300 UWO, and an impact driver delivering up to 1,400 in-lbs of torque
- Both the DEWALT impact driver and drill driver feature integrated LED work lights with a convenient 20-second delay, ensuring enhanced visibility in dimly lit or challenging work areas
- One-Handed Loading - Keep one hand free with a 1/4 in. hex chuck that accepts 1 in. bit tips
- Choose a high-friction workflow. Start with a process such as estimating-to-budget transfer, drawing revision control, subcontractor coordination, site layout or progress records.
- Define the data requirement. Agree file formats, naming, revision status, model responsibilities, approval points and what must be delivered at each stage.
- Check interoperability. Confirm that the proposed tools exchange the formats used by clients, designers and specialist subcontractors. A platform’s file-count claim does not guarantee that every object, property or workflow transfers perfectly.
- Run a bounded implementation. Use one project or trade team, appoint an owner for permissions and standards, and provide role-specific training before expanding.
- Demonstrate return on investment. Track indicators such as duplicate data entry, turnaround time for approvals, avoidable site queries, change-order visibility and rework events. Compare the baseline with the same type of work after adoption.
- Scale through partners. Share the agreed requirements with subcontractors and consultants so the digital process extends across the project instead of stopping at the main contractor’s office.
This sequence reflects Schwartz’s emphasis on demonstrated ROI, standardised processes and data requirements. It also avoids treating regulation alone as the main engine of adoption.
What conditions would make digital adoption sustainable in India?
Schwartz points to four conditions. First, companies need credible evidence that a solution pays back in their own work. Second, projects need common processes and data rules so that one firm’s digital investment can connect to another’s. Third, universities should include modern digital-construction subjects in their curricula. Fourth, professionals already in the industry need practical enablement, not just access to software licences.
India’s large engineering and software-skilled population is an advantage, but construction-specific workflows still require training in BIM coordination, information management, field technology and commercial controls. Universities, vocational providers and employers can combine classroom instruction with project-based exercises using realistic models, revisions and handoffs.
Will AI replace construction jobs?
Schwartz’s answer is that AI will not simply eliminate construction employment. His warning is about capability: “Artificial intelligence (AI) is not going to replace jobs. However, people who use artificial intelligence well will replace the jobs of people that don’t.”

That implies a workforce strategy built around “change-ready” system thinkers who can interpret data, supervise automated outputs and understand how design, fabrication, field operations and commercial decisions affect one another. Tekla 2026, for example, describes AI-assisted fabrication drawings with a human-in-the-loop review. Human checking remains part of the stated workflow; AI output should not be treated as self-validating.
What should contractors evaluate before choosing a platform?
Schwartz’s adoption argument can be turned into a practical evaluation framework. Ask:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Does the solution fit the contractor’s size, trade and project delivery method?
- Can it exchange the formats and structured data required by clients and partners?
- Does it connect office, site and external collaborators without creating parallel records?
- Which stages does it cover, from estimating and design to delivery and handover?
- What implementation support, training and local partner capacity are available?
- Which baseline measures will demonstrate reduced re-entry, rework or delay?
- Who governs permissions, revisions, retention and the quality of shared information?
A technically capable platform can still fail if roles, standards and training are undefined. Conversely, a smaller, focused deployment can create a foundation that later connects to more advanced BIM, positioning, analytics or AI tools.

Is the “top five to ten” figure India’s official contractor ranking?
No. Schwartz used it to describe the small group of large contractors from which adoption needs to spread. It is not presented as an official ranking or market-share measurement.

Can a small contractor adopt BIM without modelling every project?
Yes. A firm can begin with a targeted exchange such as coordinated models, quantities or revision control on one project. The essential first step is agreeing what information must be produced and maintained, rather than modelling more detail than the workflow needs.
What should construction schools teach for an AI-enabled industry?
Alongside modelling software, courses should cover information standards, model coordination, data quality, field-to-office workflows, commercial implications and human review of automated outputs. Schwartz specifically calls for university-level curricula and programs covering new digital solutions.

How can subcontractors participate when they use different software?
Set project data requirements and exchange formats before work starts, then use a common environment for approved files, revisions, issues and tasks. Interoperability should be checked against the actual handoffs, not inferred from a vendor’s total file-format count.
