There is no single undisputed answer to “What is the most expensive plant in the world?” The answer changes depending on whether you mean a reported completed sale, an estimate, a lot of bulbs, or an individual specimen. Among the headline examples, a centuries-old bonsai is reported to have sold for about $1.3 million, while a famous orchid is reported to have fetched about $200,000. Both figures need qualification: the bonsai claim comes from secondary reporting, and the orchid sale has not been independently verified by the source that reviewed it.
What counts as the most expensive plant?
Plant-price stories often put unlike things side by side: a single mature tree, a cutting, several bulbs sold as one lot, a retail price, or a collector estimate. Those figures answer different questions. A reported auction price is not the same as a confirmed transaction, and neither tells you what a comparable plant would cost at a nursery.
The examples below are best read as reported landmarks, not as a definitive global ranking. Gardens Illustrated’s April 2025 feature and other secondary sources report striking prices, but the headline bonsai and orchid figures are not supported here by primary transaction records.
How the headline prices compare
| Plant or lot | Reported figure and context | What the figure establishes |
|---|---|---|
| Five-needle pine bonsai | About $1.3 million; reportedly sold at the International Bonsai Convention in Takamatsu, Japan. Abana Homes reported this in its 2025 guide. | A secondary-source account of a completed sale; the guide calls it the highest publicly recorded bonsai sale, but it is not a primary auction record. |
| 250-year-old juniper bonsai | $2 million; reported by Gardens Illustrated as a 1981 Japanese sale. Abana Homes instead categorizes the Kato family juniper figure as an estimate. | The claim is disputed as to whether it was a completed public sale. Do not treat $2 million as an established sale price. |
| Shenzhen Nongke orchid | 1.68 million yuan, near US$200,000; reportedly auctioned in China in 2005. | Orchid Reference says the figure comes from media reports and has not been independently verified by its publisher; sale documentation, buyer identity, and the plant’s later fate are not established there. |
| ‘Midnight Mystic’ hyacinth bulbs | £150,000 for three bulbs; reportedly purchased by Thompson & Morgan at auction in the Netherlands in 2008. | A reported price for a three-bulb lot, not for one ordinary hyacinth plant. |
| ‘Golden Tears’ snowdrop | £1,850; reported UK sale in 2022. | Gardens Illustrated identifies it as a cultivar bred by Joe Sharman of Monksilver Nursery. |
| Variegated Rhaphidophora tetrasperma | About £14,000; reported New Zealand auction sale in 2021. | A reported price for a cutting. The plant is often called Mini Monstera, but it is not a true Monstera. |
Why bonsai can reach extraordinary prices
A bonsai’s value can reflect decades or centuries of growth and training, along with the skill required to maintain its form. Age, styling, provenance, and the condition and character of the individual tree matter; two trees of the same species are not interchangeable commodities. A mature specimen may also be valued because a buyer wants a particular size immediately rather than waiting years to develop one.

Gardens Illustrated reports a 250-year-old juniper at $2 million in 1981, while Abana Homes distinguishes that amount as an estimate and describes a roughly $1.3 million five-needle pine as a reported sale. Because the accounts differ and are secondary reporting, the safer answer to “What is the most expensive bonsai tree?” is that the reported public-sale figure is about $1.3 million, while the often-repeated $2 million juniper figure is not established as a public sale.
For perspective, Gardens Illustrated gives specialist retail examples rather than auction records: sought-after Hepatica varieties may fetch around £450 in the UK, and a two-metre cloud-pruned Scots pine may cost around £4,000–£5,000. These are not directly comparable with decades-old bonsai auction claims.

Why the Shenzhen Nongke orchid is famous—and what remains uncertain
The Shenzhen Nongke is described as a lab-bred orchid hybrid reportedly sold at auction in China in 2005 for 1.68 million yuan, near US$200,000. That would make it one of the most striking reported orchid prices, but it does not establish a verified world record: Orchid Reference says the price was reported by media and was not independently verified by the publisher. The exact sale documentation, buyer, and what happened to the plant afterward remain unconfirmed in that account.
It is therefore more accurate to call the Shenzhen Nongke the subject of a widely reported high-price auction story than to claim that a fully documented, independently verified sale makes it conclusively the most expensive orchid ever sold. It is also not a product readers should expect to find at ordinary retail.

What makes a rare plant valuable?
Rarity is only one part of price. Across these examples, reported value is associated with some combination of:
- Age and maturity: an established tree can represent a long period of cultivation and provide the size a buyer wants now.
- Expert cultivation and styling: bonsai shaping and meticulous pruning require sustained horticultural skill.
- Provenance and identity: a documented history, recognized cultivar, or notable individual specimen can distinguish one plant from another.
- Scarcity and propagation: slow or difficult propagation can limit supply, though successful propagation may make a once-scarce plant more accessible.
- Collector demand: a competitive auction can produce a headline price that says more about a particular lot and its bidders than about typical market value.
Gardens Illustrated quotes Guy Watts, owner and managing director of Architectural Plants, saying: “Our specialist propagation is not about making plants expensive, it is about making them more accessible to more people.” That distinction matters: a rare plant can become less scarce as growers propagate it, and rarity alone does not guarantee a high price.

Record prices are not ordinary retail prices
A famous auction figure should not be used as a shopping benchmark. The reported bonsai examples concern exceptional, individual trees; the hyacinth amount covered three bulbs; and the Rhaphidophora figure concerned a cutting. These are different units, contexts, and kinds of transaction.
Historical market research also shows why orchid prices need context. A 2018 report by the Global Initiative Against Transnational Organized Crime recorded eBay asking prices of US$3–US$120 for blooming-size Paphiopedilum orchids of the same species, with prices varying by seller, country, and plant characteristics. Those were historical asking prices, not current prices, completed sale prices, or a guide to every orchid.

The same 2018 report notes that plants without CITES paperwork may be cheaper. That observation is not a statement of current legal requirements in every country. Before buying or moving an orchid across borders, check applicable rules and documentation with the relevant authorities; legality can depend on the species and the countries involved.
If you want a bonsai, buy for the tree—not the record
For a practical bonsai purchase, assess the individual tree’s health, form, species, and care needs rather than assuming a high price signals quality or future value. Meticulous pruning is part of bonsai cultivation, and suitable bonsai pruning shears are a basic tool for maintaining a tree. Shears do not make a bonsai valuable, and record-priced specimens are not representative of ordinary nursery stock.
