The Free Universal Construction Kit is a set of downloadable STL adapter files that lets parts from ten named construction-toy systems connect. It is not a boxed kit: you print the pieces yourself or arrange personal copies through a fabrication service. The project lists nearly 80 two-way adapters and a larger Universal Adapter Brick, but it does not promise compatibility with every toy or every version of a brand.
What the Free Universal Construction Kit does
F.A.T. Lab and Sy-Lab created printable connectors for joining otherwise separate toy-building systems. The project describes its aim as enabling “new forms of forward compatibility,” extending how systems can be used together. Its creators also call it “not a product; it is a provocation.” F.A.T. Lab’s project page presents the idea as a way to answer the question, “Ever wanted to connect your Legos and Tinkertoys together?”
The Museum of Modern Art catalogs the work as approximately eighty 3D-printing files and dates it to 2012. The project archive describes nearly 80 two-way adapters plus a larger Universal Adapter Brick intended to connect the supported systems. Those descriptions establish the project’s scope, not a guarantee that every possible pair of parts will fit.
Which toy systems are listed as supported?
The official project page names these ten systems:

“Supported” refers to the systems named by the project; it should not be read as universal compatibility across all toy lines, part shapes, or production generations. The project page also says it is not associated with, endorsed by, or approved by the listed toy brands.

How to get and make the adapters
The files are digital STL models, not physical parts sold by the creators. The F.A.T. Lab page links individual adapters through Thingiverse and provides a ZIP archive. The project archive also offers complete STL files. Both sources state that dimensions are in inches.
- Choose the needed adapters. Use the individual file links or download the complete archive from the project page.
- Check the units and model in your slicer. Confirm that the STL is interpreted at the intended size and that the selected file matches the toy parts you want to connect. The published sources identify inches as the units; printer compatibility and fit should be checked in your own workflow.
- Print the parts or request personal fabrication. The project recommends desktop 3D printing. If you do not have a printer, its terms allow an individual to contract a fabrication service bureau for personal copies.
The sources do not specify a printer model, filament type, print settings, or post-processing method. They report that the project’s creator used an optical comparator with a readout accurate to less than 0.0001 inch (2.54 microns) when measuring parts; that is the instrument’s stated precision, not a promise that a consumer printer will reproduce that tolerance.

Printing yourself or using a fabrication service

Neither path has a published price comparison or a tested printer-and-material recommendation in the project sources. Choose based on equipment you already have, service availability, per-part cost, and the intended use rather than assuming a particular material will produce a specific fit.

The official page identifies the license as Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike 3.0 Unported. It permits copying, sharing, remixing, and adapting with attribution; extensions must use the same or a similar license. The page says commercial mass production is not allowed, while allowing individuals to contract fabrication services for personal copies. Review the license terms and the project’s own terms before sharing or adapting files.

The project’s warning is: “WARNING: CHOKING HAZARD! Small parts. Not for children under 3 years.” The creators also disclaim warranties concerning the kit’s safety, quality, and functionality. Treat printed connectors as small parts and assess their suitability for the intended user and setting.
