Invite a child to build with blocks by making a safe, comfortable space, offering materials without a required project, and letting the child decide what to make and when to stop. You can use suitable blocks you already own; buying a new set is optional.
What makes block play child-led?
In child-led free play, the child chooses the activity’s rules and aims. LEGO Group describes free play as play led by the child without adult input on rules or aims; that is the company’s definition, rather than an independent standard. In practice, an adult can prepare the space and respond to requests while leaving the building idea and its direction to the child.
Blocks suit this kind of play because they can be arranged in many ways. England’s Department for Education includes blocks among open-ended resources in its early-years guidance, while U.S. Head Start guidance also recommends open-ended materials such as blocks. These recommendations apply to their respective early-years contexts, not as a universal policy.
A five-step free-play plan
-
Prepare a comfortable space
Choose a clear area where the child can reach and move the blocks comfortably. Put out a manageable selection that is suitable for the child’s age and abilities. Add another safe, open-ended material only if it is likely to support the play rather than distract from it.

Offer an open invitation
You might ask, “What would you like to build today?” Or set out the blocks and wait for the child to begin. Avoid presenting a model to copy or requiring a particular finished object.
-
Let the child direct the play
The child might stack, sort, knock down, rebuild, or invent a story around the blocks. Follow changes in direction rather than steering toward your own idea. If the child asks for help, help with the part they request; otherwise, give them room to explore their approach.

If conversation feels natural, try “Tell me about what you’re making” or “What might happen next?” Treat these as invitations to share, not questions with right answers. There is no need to turn every build into a lesson.
-
Let the child choose when to finish
When the child is ready to stop, you can invite them to show or describe the creation. Sharing is optional, not a requirement to complete a project. A LEGO Foundation DUPLO Play Box booklet includes building and sharing in a facilitated sequence; for free play, keep any such closing moment light and let the child decide whether to join in.

Choose blocks with age and handling in mind
Start with blocks the family already owns if they are appropriate for the child. Check that the pieces are manageable for that child and supervise according to the materials and circumstances. The cited guidance does not establish a universal safety threshold, so do not assume every piece is suitable for every age.
If you decide to buy blocks, compare age suitability and piece size first, then consider ease of handling, material and durability, and the range of builds the set permits. LEGO DUPLO is one preschool-oriented example mentioned by LEGO Group, but the cited guidance does not compare brands or establish that one is best. England’s early-years guidance names blocks generally as an open-ended resource. A branded set is not necessary for this plan.

How long should free block play last?
Let the child’s attention and circumstances guide the stopping point. The sources cited here do not establish a universal duration for free block play, so there is no evidence-based target number of minutes to apply to every child. Avoid turning the activity into a timed performance exercise.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Does free play need special toys or equipment?
No special purchase is required by the guidance cited here. Suitable blocks already at home can provide an open-ended material for building; the important part of this plan is that the child remains in charge of the play’s goal and direction.
