Its long and short spans keep a Golden Mean relationship as the gauge opens and closes, making it useful for visual layout—not precise measurement.
What the Fibonacci gauge does
The gauge is an adjustable design aid: the shorter span, measured from the center point to an outer point, is 0.618 of the longer center-to-outer span. Align the long span with a known dimension and use the short span to judge a related dimension. WOOD Magazine describes the relationship as 1:1.618 for the long and short sides of a rectangle.
This proportion can help you assess whether an inset, panel, or section looks balanced in relation to a larger dimension. It does not establish a universally attractive proportion, and it cannot replace dimensions required for fit, strength, clearances, or construction.
How to build the gauge
The free plan is linked from WOOD Magazine’s Fibonacci gauge page. The downloadable drawing and instructions identify themselves as a November 2006 plan; the landing page was updated February 27, 2025. Use the plan itself for its full-size patterns and exact hole locations and dimensions rather than relying on transcribed measurements.

- Precise Inside Dimension Reference: TOOLCOOL Modular Bar Gauge allows you to create an exact physical reference for an inside dimension, eliminating the guesswork from inside measurements
- Versatile Tip Options: Includes 4 sets of different tips that let you check diagonals for square, transfer measurements, set up machinery and even turn this inside measurement tool into an outside measurement tool
- Universal Measurement Transfer: Transfers measurements without concern for metric or imperial units, simply tells you if your drawer, frame or case is square, or whether the part will fit
- Expandable Modular Design: Modular design allows you to assemble as many or as few bars as you need for the job at hand, measuring range from 8-1/4 inch up to 95-3/16 inch, can be used for large projects
- Premium Construction Materials: This Modular Bar Gauge System is precisely machined from premium materials including aluminum alloy clamp body, stainless steel bar, and brass tip, with robust structure ensuring longevity and consistent performance
- Print the patterns at full size. Set the print scale to 100 percent; do not select “fit to page.” Measure the printed patterns to verify their size before transferring them to stock.
- Cut three arms. Use dense hardwood stock and shape the pieces to match the patterns. The plan used figured maple, while noting that other wood can be used.
- Mark and drill the holes. Transfer the hole centers from the verified patterns, then drill the marked holes as shown in the drawing.
- Finish the arms. Apply the finish to each arm before assembly.
- Join the arms. Assemble them with the four binder posts and screws specified in the plan. WOOD Magazine recommends thread-locking compound to help keep the screws from loosening.
Check that the arms move through their intended range after assembly and that the pivots remain secure. Refer to the plan for the drawing’s dimensions and assembly arrangement.
How to use it for proportioning
Estimate an inset on a box lid
To judge the surround around an inset in a jewelry-box lid, set the gauge against a known lid dimension and use the related span as a visual guide for the inset or its margins. Treat the result as a proportioning starting point, then make the actual layout measurements you need for the build.

- Material: The Modular Rod Gauge is made of metal material and is durable and suitable for frequent use. The sturdy construction ensures long life and consistent performance.
Estimate dimensions from a photograph
The gauge can also help estimate proportions in a furniture photograph if you have a defensible assumed dimension. WOOD Magazine’s example assumes a writing-surface height of 30 inches, then uses the gauge to estimate related cabinet sections. That 30-inch figure is an illustrative assumption in the example, not a universal furniture standard. Measurements inferred from a photograph remain estimates.
Use the ratio as a guide, not a rule
WOOD Magazine’s 2006 article gives this arithmetic illustration: 18 inches multiplied by 1.618 is about 29 inches. It demonstrates how the ratio relates two dimensions; it is not evidence that every project should use those proportions.

Where the gauge’s accuracy ends
WOOD Magazine’s instruction is explicit: “Remember, a Fibonacci gauge isn’t for precise measurement.” Use it to get close to proportions that look pleasing, then rely on a ruler, tape measure, or other suitable instrument for exact dimensions. The plan does not claim that the Golden Mean guarantees beauty or that the gauge has been tested as a precision instrument.
