The original Fractal Design Refine is an adjustable gaming chair with a restrained, office-friendly look, synchro-tilt movement, and a choice of mesh, fabric, or Alcantara. Its adjustment range and ergonomics earned praise from PCWorld, but the armrests can shift when bumped, and fit depends on the chair’s material variant and your measurements. This review covers the original Refine, not the newer Refine 2.
What the original Refine offers
Fractal Design positions the Refine for gaming and home-office use. Rather than a racing-seat silhouette, it has a more restrained design. Its central feature is a broad set of adjustments: the seat moves in height and depth, the lumbar support adjusts up and down and forward and back, and the headrest can be adjusted or removed.
The chair uses a synchro-tilt mechanism, so the seat and backrest move together. You can adjust tilt tension and choose among 11 lock positions, or leave the tilt free. This is not an independent backrest recline: PCGamesN describes the seat and back moving in semi-unison.
Adjustments and setup
- Seat: Adjust the height and slide the seat forward or back to change its depth.
- Lumbar support: Use the dial to move the support vertically and forward or backward.
- Armrests: Move them up or down, laterally, forward or backward, and rotate them.
- Headrest: Adjust its height; the memory-foam headrest is removable.
- Tilt: Set the tension and lock the synchro-tilt in one of 11 positions, or leave it unlocked.
Fractal’s setup guide lists seat-height ranges of 475–595 mm for Fabric and Alcantara, and 490–610 mm for Mesh. The support FAQ also specifies 65 mm hubless casters with soft PU wheels for hard and soft surfaces. Comfort and the main drawback
In its November 4, 2024 review, PCWorld praised the Refine’s construction, ergonomics, backrest, synchro-tilt, and neck cushion. Its reviewer found the chair comfortable for long sitting and assembly relatively easy. That is one publication’s hands-on assessment, not a universal comfort finding. PCWorld’s summary called it “an excellent, ergonomic gaming chair that is also suitable for the home office.” Read PCWorld’s review.
PCWorld’s clearest criticism is the armrests: they can move too easily if bumped and feel slightly wobbly. PCGamesN also notes that the forward-and-back slide does not lock, so the arms may shift when you press on them to sit down or stand up. Mesh, Fabric, or Alcantara?
The original Refine is sold in Mesh, Fabric, and Alcantara versions. The available evidence supports comparing their upholstery and dimensions, but it does not establish controlled differences in temperature, durability, or comfort across all three materials.
PCWorld preferred upholstery over mesh for extended sitting; that is the reviewer’s preference, not a universal result. Consider which surface you prefer, then compare the dimensions of the exact version you are considering. The sources do not establish a complete set of variant-by-variant dimensions for Alcantara.

Fit: compare your measurements with the right version
Fractal recommends the original Refine for people about 1.65–2.0 m tall and 60–125 kg, and gives it a maximum capacity of 125 kg. These are manufacturer recommendations, not a personalized fit assessment. Seat dimensions also vary by version: PCWorld lists a 540 mm seat width and 460 mm depth for Fabric, compared with 550 mm width and 465 mm depth for Mesh. The seat-height ranges are 475–595 mm for Fabric and Alcantara, and 490–610 mm for Mesh.
Before choosing, compare your leg length and preferred sitting position with the seat depth, and check whether the height range works with your desk. Height and weight alone cannot confirm that a chair will fit you comfortably. Fractal Design’s product page has the manufacturer’s recommendations and specifications.

Warranty and standards
Fractal states a five-year warranty for mechanical parts and three years for soft parts, including upholstery, the lumbar support pad, arm caps, and headrest. Coverage is subject to the applicable warranty terms, so check the terms for your region before purchase. The manufacturer also says the chair meets BIFMA X5.1 and EN1335-1; those claims are not evidence of a medical or ergonomic outcome.
Original Refine versus Refine 2
The Refine 2 is a separate generation, and its specifications should not be applied to the original chair reviewed here. Fractal says the Refine 2 adds a dual-pad lumbar design, an armrest depth lock, updated materials and casters, revised seat foam, and a stated capacity of up to 135 kg. Who should consider the Refine?
The original Refine is worth considering if you want a gaming chair with a more understated appearance, multiple fit adjustments, and a seat-and-back synchro-tilt. Its material options and adjustment range are useful points of comparison when choosing a chair for a desk used for both work and play.
Look elsewhere or try the Refine before buying if you need armrests that stay firmly locked when you push on them, or if the stated dimensions do not suit your body or desk. A current price, stock status, and regional listing are not established here, so check a retailer for the exact original-generation model and material variant before making a purchase.
