LED football-stadium lighting improves visibility only when it is designed as a complete optical and control system. The target is not simply a high lux number. A compliant installation must deliver the required horizontal light on the pitch, adequate vertical light for players and cameras, even distribution, controlled glare, useful colour rendering, stable camera images and acceptable spill. LED can reduce operating power and maintenance compared with older systems, but no single savings percentage applies to every ground. The credible figure comes from a venue-specific baseline, operating schedule, controls and measured post-installation energy.

Start with the stadium category and match use

Lighting design begins with the events the ground will host. UEFA’s Stadium Lighting Guide 2023 replaced its 2016 guide and adds further LED design information. It recommends that designers consult the applicable UEFA Stadium Infrastructure Regulations and competition manuals, and exceed minimum values where practicable. A stadium used only for local matches does not have the same brief as one hosting televised European competition.

UEFA’s regulations in force from 1 June 2025 set different illuminance obligations by category. The figures below are regulatory minimums, not a universal specification for every football ground. The relevant competition documents and the host broadcaster’s requirements still need to be checked for the project.

UEFA category Horizontal illuminance Horizontal uniformity Vertical illuminance Vertical uniformity
Category 1 At least 350 lux average, or enough for the host broadcaster to broadcast adequately Not stated in the regulation summary Not stated in the regulation summary Not stated in the regulation summary
Category 2 800 lux average U1h > 0.4; U2h > 0.6 350 lux average on each reference plane U1v > 0.35; U2v > 0.45
Category 3 1,200 lux average U1h > 0.4; U2h > 0.6 700 lux average on each reference plane U1v > 0.35; U2v > 0.45
Category 4 1,400 lux average U1h > 0.5; U2h > 0.7 1,000 lux average on each reference plane U1v > 0.4; U2v > 0.5

“Horizontal” describes light falling on the playing surface. “Vertical” describes light reaching upright planes facing anticipated camera positions and the players’ visible surfaces. A design can meet a horizontal average while producing poor television images or dark faces if its vertical component is neglected.

Why lux alone does not describe visibility

Uniformity prevents bright and dark patches

Players judge speed, distance and the flight of the ball against the whole field, not an average reading. Uniformity ratios compare the lowest readings with the average or the highest reading, depending on the specified metric. Poor overlap between luminaires can leave corners, penalty areas or touchlines noticeably darker even when the average lux passes.

Vertical light supports players and cameras

Broadcast cameras look across the pitch, so they need light on vertical planes as well as the turf. Reference planes are assessed from anticipated camera directions. Their orientation, height and spacing must be included in the photometric model rather than added as an afterthought.

Glare, shadows and modelling affect comfort

Aim points that maximise a calculation can still put bright sources in a goalkeeper’s or spectator’s view. Excessive glare reduces visual comfort and can mask the ball. Light from several directions gives faces and bodies natural modelling; a single dominant direction can create harsh shadows or make the ball difficult to track. Mounting height, aiming angles and overlap therefore influence both play and viewing comfort.

Colour and temporal behaviour matter on television

LED products can provide good colour rendition, but the luminaire, driver and control system must be considered together. Dimming frequency, LED refresh behaviour and camera sensor readout can create visible flicker, banding or dark bars. A fixture that looks steady to spectators may still perform poorly at high-speed or slow-motion camera settings. The broadcaster and lighting designer should agree acceptance tests before purchase.

What LED changes—and what it does not

UEFA recommends LED luminaires for new Level A and Level B stadiums and also recommends LED for Levels C and D where appropriate. It says HID should be selected for a new installation only for specific reasons. The recommendation is not a blanket instruction to replace every existing floodlight immediately: each venue needs a solution that is efficient, cost-effective over its life and environmentally responsible.

  • Lower operating power: LED sources can produce the required output with less power than many older systems, but the actual reduction depends on the old wattage, optical efficiency, target levels and hours of use.
  • Controllable output: Instant starting, dimming and scene control can match light to training, local matches, television and emergency conditions instead of running one maximum setting.
  • Maintenance potential: Long service life and reduced relamping work can be valuable where access requires cranes or road closures. The maintenance plan must still account for lumen depreciation, driver failures, cleaning and access.
  • Broadcast flexibility: Properly specified LED can support colour and camera requirements, but refresh rate, driver design and dimming method must be verified for the cameras in use.

LED does not correct a poor layout. If luminaires are mounted in unsuitable positions, aimed too steeply or blocked by roof structure, a new source can reproduce the same dark areas and glare. UEFA’s guide states that “Every sports stadium is unique” and that architecture constrains the available design.

How geometry determines the result

Floodlight position is one of the primary design decisions. UEFA notes that positioning has a “huge impact on the pitch illuminance conditions.” A design team should survey roof edges, towers, gantries, sightlines, structural capacity, maintenance routes and nearby properties before selecting fixtures.

  1. Define planes and grids. Set the pitch calculation grid, horizontal plane and the vertical reference planes required by the competition or broadcaster.
  2. Map mounting options. Record each usable position, mounting height, azimuth, tilt range, structural load and access method. Include obstructions and future roof work.
  3. Run photometric calculations. Compare average illuminance, U1 and U2 uniformity, vertical values, glare indicators, shadow modelling and spill for every proposed arrangement.
  4. Review camera views. Test anticipated main-camera, reverse-camera, corner and goal-line positions. Check faces, shirts, advertising boards and the ball at normal and high-speed frame rates.
  5. Optimise aiming and overlap. Adjust beam spreads and aim points so that no single luminaire carries an excessive part of the field and the corners receive sufficient light.
  6. Coordinate construction. Verify brackets, cabling, earthing, wind loads, maintenance access, control-network routes and safe isolation before ordering equipment.

Energy use: how to make a defensible claim

The US Department of Energy’s sports-venue discussion identifies LED lighting as one measure venues have deployed to pursue savings. It does not isolate football-pitch floodlighting or provide a transferable before-and-after percentage. Indoor arenas and unrelated facility-lighting examples cannot establish what a football stadium will save.

A proper project statement identifies:

  • the existing luminaires, lamp wattage, quantity, controls and condition;
  • the replacement fixtures, driver power, optical output and control scenes;
  • the baseline year and measured or modelled method;
  • training, match, broadcast, cleaning and emergency operating hours;
  • whether the result is lighting-only energy or whole-building energy;
  • whether HVAC, roof, electrical or other works changed at the same time;
  • the reported unit: annual kWh, peak demand, cost or carbon; and
  • tariffs, demand charges and any renewable generation used in the calculation.

For example, dimming to a lower training scene may reduce kWh without changing the full-match design load. A cost result can change when electricity tariffs change, while a carbon result depends on the grid factor used. These measures should not be presented as interchangeable.

Retrofit or new installation?

A retrofit assessment should compare the existing system with at least two complete designs: replacement luminaires in the current positions and a reconfigured arrangement that uses available structural locations more effectively. The second option may improve uniformity or vertical light but can require new steelwork, cable routes and access equipment.

Choose the lowest-lifecycle-cost option that satisfies the applicable category and use case, rather than the lowest purchase price. Include design fees, structural alterations, controls, commissioning, spare drivers, cleaning, access equipment, planned maintenance and disposal. Retain existing equipment only when its condition, photometry, control compatibility and future parts support are documented.

Commissioning and measurement

UEFA’s guide specifies measurement procedures, suitable illuminance meters and annual recalibration. A handheld digital lux meter is useful for preliminary spot checks, but it cannot by itself prove stadium compliance. The field grid, plane orientation, meter suitability, calibration status, uniformity calculations and reporting format all affect the result.

  1. Confirm that installation, aiming marks, control scenes and emergency settings match the approved design.
  2. Allow the system to stabilise according to the manufacturer’s instructions, then record fixture status, dimming level and environmental conditions.
  3. Measure every point on the specified horizontal grid and each required vertical reference plane with a calibrated instrument.
  4. Calculate average, minimum, maximum, U1 and U2 values separately for horizontal and vertical measurements.
  5. Inspect glare from player, referee, spectator and camera locations, not only from the measurement points.
  6. Test television cameras at the agreed shutter speeds, frame rates and slow-motion settings for flicker, banding and colour consistency.
  7. Issue an as-built record with fixture aiming, control scenes, readings, calibration certificates, defects and corrective actions.

Use qualified sports-lighting professionals for design and verification. FIFA’s Quality Programme states that certification requires a product from a FIFA standard licensee, testing by a FIFA-accredited institute and a report determining whether the system was installed successfully. Confirm the current programme requirements and status before making any certification claim.

Common failure modes and fixes

The average passes but the pitch looks uneven

Check grid spacing, beam overlap, failed or mis-aimed fixtures and lumen depreciation. Re-aiming or adding controlled overlap may solve the problem; increasing every fixture’s output can worsen glare and energy use.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Players report glare

Review source positions from goalkeeper, defender and corner views. Use shielding, revised tilt, different optics or a higher mounting position where structure permits. Do not rely on a single glare metric without a visual review.

Television shows flicker or banding

Check driver frequency, dimming protocol, LED refresh settings and camera sensor readout together. Require a camera test at the broadcaster’s actual settings and replace incompatible drivers or control hardware.

Comparing two stadium-lighting proposals

Request the same evidence from each bidder so the comparison is meaningful:

Evaluation area Evidence to request
Compliance Applicable UEFA category, competition brief, calculation assumptions and exceptions
Visibility Horizontal and vertical averages, U1/U2 values, grid and reference-plane diagrams
Comfort Glare assessment, player and spectator viewpoints, shadow/modelling review and spill model
Broadcast Colour data, camera test settings, flicker results, dimming and refresh specifications
Energy Fixture power, control scenes, annual operating schedule and baseline calculation
Construction Mounting loads, brackets, cable routes, access plan, programme and isolation requirements
Lifecycle Warranty, driver strategy, spare parts, cleaning, recalibration and planned maintenance

The strongest proposal is the one that demonstrates performance under the venue’s actual geometry and schedule. A catalogue lumen figure or a generic percentage saving is not a substitute for that evidence.
