The FNIRSI DMC-100 is an unusually feature-rich budget clamp meter, especially because it can measure DC current without breaking the circuit. Its color display, rechargeable battery, waveform and power modes, and broad multimeter functions make it attractive for automotive, battery, solar, and bench work. But opening the case reveals a more important story: the advertised features do not by themselves establish professional accuracy or mains-safety credentials.
For low-voltage construction troubleshooting and hobbyist work, the DMC-100 may be useful. For service entrances, industrial panels, CAT III/IV environments, or any job where meter failure could expose you to lethal energy, use a properly documented professional instrument instead.

What the FNIRSI DMC-100 is
The DMC-100 is both a clamp ammeter and a conventional digital multimeter. Its Hall-effect clamp measures AC and DC current around a conductor, while probe inputs handle voltage, resistance, capacitance, frequency, diode, continuity, temperature, and related functions.
FNIRSI lists a 10,000-count True RMS display, a 25 mm jaw opening, a 2-inch 240 × 320 color TFT screen, a 3.7 V 1500 mAh rechargeable battery, USB-C charging, waveform and power-calculation modes, NCV detection, storage for up to 30 readings, and firmware-update support. The official specification is available on the FNIRSI DMC-100 product page.

Why DC clamp measurement matters
Many inexpensive clamp meters concentrate on AC current. DC clamp capability makes this model more relevant to construction and maintenance work involving battery banks, solar strings, portable power stations, control panels, automotive systems, DC supplies, motors, and actuators.
A clamp is convenient because the circuit does not need to be opened. That convenience has limits. The jaws must surround one current-carrying conductor only. If they surround both the outgoing and return conductors, their magnetic fields can cancel and the meter may show a misleadingly small value.

Independent testing found that readings could change with the meter’s tilt or orientation, so the instrument should be held steadily, the conductor kept near the jaw center, and surprising results repeated with another method.

Manual-derived figures are approximately ±(0.5% + 3 counts) for DC voltage, ±(1% + 3 counts) for AC voltage, ±(2.5% + 10 counts) for DC current, ±(1.5% + 3 counts) for resistance, and ±(2.5% + 5 counts) for temperature. These are published specifications rather than independently verified results; the figures are reproduced in the manual specification transcription.
What the accuracy numbers mean in practice
The current specification deserves particular attention. An error of ±(2.5% + 10 counts) is relatively loose, and the fixed-count term matters most at low current. For example, on a display resolution of 0.01 A, 10 counts equals 0.10 A. At a 0.20 A reading, that fixed component alone represents half the displayed value before the percentage term, noise, offset, and magnetic interference are considered.

That does not make the clamp useless. It means that a reading of several amps can be useful for troubleshooting, while a reading near the bottom of the range should not be treated as a precise low-current measurement. For consequential measurements below a few hundred milliamps, a suitable shunt, bench meter, or dedicated low-current instrument is a better choice.
What independent testing found
Voltage and resistance
Chiptron.eu compared the DMC-100 with a calibrated Keysight U1252B and reported very good agreement for voltage and resistance. That is encouraging for bench and hobbyist work, but it represents one sample and does not establish production consistency or long-term calibration stability. See the Chiptron.eu evaluation.
Clamp current
In one test reported by iXBT, the meter showed about 4.03 A against a 4 A reference and 1.05 A against a 1 A reference. The same review found that very small currents were less convincing and that displayed current began at roughly 0.2 A in that test. Another tester found current readings within the stated specification but observed changes when the instrument was tilted. These results support using the DMC-100 as a practical indicator for ordinary loads, not as a precision low-current reference.

Temperature
The supplied thermocouple should be regarded as a rough indicator. One review found a room-temperature result about 5 °C above a reference thermometer, while a user report described an offset of roughly 10 °C. That is enough to justify independent verification before using it for thermal protection, equipment acceptance, or other safety-critical work.

Non-contact voltage detection can help locate an energized conductor, but it cannot prove that a circuit is dead. Testing found it more effective on energized or loaded wires and less dependable through concrete, plaster, or at depth. Always verify de-energization with an appropriate contact test procedure and a properly rated instrument.
What the teardown reveals
The DMC-100 is interesting because the teardown provides more than a list of chips. It offers clues about the design’s priorities and limitations. The examined unit contained:
- A 1500 mAh rechargeable battery and TC4056A charging chip.
- A Hongfa HF04/3-LS relay.
- Winbond W25Q32-series external flash.
- An AT32F415 microcontroller.
- An SD7502 10,000-count measurement chip.
- A GS8334 op-amp associated with current conditioning.
- Several series resistors in the voltage-divider path.
- A color display driven through an SPI-style interface.
Some identifications in the MyDigit teardown were reconstructed from incomplete or sanded markings and should be treated as probable rather than absolute. More importantly, the teardown reported ordinary-looking protection components, limited separation between low- and high-voltage sections, and no obvious surge suppressor in the examined unit.
A single teardown cannot prove that every production revision is identical, and photographs alone cannot establish a complete safety failure. They do, however, raise reasonable questions about protection margin and isolation—questions that a feature list cannot answer.

The CAT rating and the safety question
Some listings and manual reproductions describe the meter as CAT III 600 V. That is a manufacturer or manual claim, not independent evidence that the instrument has the same protection, certification, quality control, and fault tolerance as an established professional meter.
FNIRSI’s own precautions advise inspecting the insulation, holding probes behind their guards, disconnecting leads before changing ranges, avoiding contact with input jacks, and not using the instrument while charging. The product page also warns about measurements above 36 V DC or 25 V AC. Those instructions should be followed exactly.
The practical conclusion is application-specific:
- Reasonable candidates: low-voltage electronics, automotive systems, batteries, solar equipment, controlled bench work, and non-hazardous troubleshooting where critical readings can be independently checked.
- Poor candidates: utility mains, service entrances, industrial switchgear, distribution boards, CAT IV environments, and any circuit with enough available fault energy to cause severe injury if the meter fails.
For construction electricians and technicians working around hazardous mains, a Fluke, Keysight, or comparable professional instrument with clearly documented certification and support is the more defensible choice. Do not infer safety from the 750 V or CAT III 600 V numbers alone.
Using the clamp correctly
- Inspect the case, jaw surfaces, leads, probe insulation, and input jacks.
- Select AC or DC clamp-current mode.
- For DC current, close the jaws around no conductor and perform the zero function.
- Open the jaws and place them around one conductor only.
- Close the jaws fully and center the conductor where practical.
- Keep the meter stable; repeat the reading if tilting changes it substantially.
- Use hold or min/max for changing loads, but do not assume waveform or peak display equals oscilloscope-grade capture.
- Remove the conductor before switching functions or ranges if required by the manual.
For voltage, resistance, capacitance, frequency, diode, continuity, and temperature, use the COM and INPUT terminals, keep fingers behind the probe guards, and never measure resistance, capacitance, continuity, or diode mode on an energized circuit.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsInterface and mechanical compromises
The color interface is a genuine advantage in a budget meter. The DMC-100 provides general measurement, manual ranging, zeroing, hold, min/max, brightness control, Celsius/Fahrenheit selection, waveform display, power calculation, and stored readings. Auto power-off can be set to off, 5, 15, or 30 minutes, and the interface supports English and Chinese.
Best Value
- Versatile Digital Clamp Meter: Accurately measures AC/DC Current, AC/DC Voltage, Capacitance, Frequency, Duty Cycle, Resistance, Diode, Continuity and Live Wire Tests. This clamp meter is a really useful tool for solving industrial and household electrical issues.
- Non-contact Voltage Testing: This Clamp Meter features non-contact voltage testing with sound and light alarms. When the Meter senses a weak AC signal, the green indicator light will come on and the buzzer will emit a slow, audible beep. when the Meter senses a strong AC signal, the red indicator light will come on and the buzzer will emit a brief beep.
- Multifunctional & Easy to read: Support Data Hold, Max/Min, Auto power off after 15 minutes inactivity, low battery indicator and continuity buzzer. The LCD Backlit Screen and Flashlight make it easy to use in a dark working area. ZERO function decreases the data error influenced by the Earth’s magnetic field, and helps you to obtain a more accurate measurement.
- Large Jaw Opening: The jaw opening measures current in a conductor without touching or interrupting the circuit. Its slim and compact size makes it easy to operate in narrow spaces. This clamp meter has passed the environmental pollution test degree 2 and overvoltage category III 600V safety standards.
- Additional Tips: To measure the current you need to clamp the meter around one of the wires and not the whole power cord. Ensure the conductor to betested is in the center of the clamp head. The clamp Jaw is only used to measure current. Do not measure voltage by clamping the conductor being measured.
The screen and feature density do not eliminate practical compromises. The 25 mm jaws may not fit around thick bundled conductors. The display has been reported to refresh slowly or show visible tearing. The included probes are basic, and users have described the banana-jack spacing as nonstandard enough to limit some accessories. USB-C is primarily for charging and firmware transfer, not necessarily general-purpose data logging.
Firmware support is useful but introduces another failure mode. Use only a file supplied for the exact DMC-100 model and preserve the current version information before updating. An interrupted update or revision mismatch could make the meter unusable. Follow the current manufacturer procedure rather than relying on an old button sequence copied from a third-party manual.
Who should buy or use it?
| Use case | Verdict | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Automotive, battery, and solar diagnostics | Good conditional fit | DC clamp capability and broad functions are useful, provided low-current readings are checked. |
| Bench electronics | Good secondary meter | Voltage and resistance testing were encouraging, but it is not a precision reference. |
| General construction maintenance | Depends on the circuit | Useful for controlled low-voltage work; do not extend that confidence to hazardous distribution equipment. |
| Professional mains and industrial work | Not recommended as the primary meter | Safety documentation and protection concerns outweigh the feature count. |
| Traceable temperature or calibration work | Poor fit | Reported thermocouple offsets and limited calibration evidence are significant. |
Alternatives
A Fluke 325 is the more defensible choice when professional safety documentation, service support, and field reliability matter more than price or display features.
The Klein Tools CL390 offers a mainstream electrician-tool brand, AC/DC clamp capability, and more accessible support channels for many U.S. users.
The compact UNI-T UT210E is another budget-oriented DC-clamp option, although it is a different form factor and feature proposition. These products should not be treated as directly performance-tested against the DMC-100 without a side-by-side evaluation.
Final verdict
The FNIRSI DMC-100 is worth cracking open because its real story is not the color screen or the 600 A headline. It is the contrast between impressive feature density and unresolved questions about low-current behavior, temperature accuracy, mechanical refinement, protection, and safety certification.
It can be a useful, affordable secondary instrument for low-voltage construction troubleshooting, automotive work, batteries, solar systems, and bench electronics. It should not be treated as a blanket substitute for a properly certified professional meter, especially on hazardous mains or industrial equipment.
