A flush-mounted door is designed to sit level with the finished wall on a specified face, usually using a concealed frame integrated into the wall finish. The effect depends on a coordinated door-and-frame system—not just a flat door leaf. Before ordering, confirm which surfaces should align, the wall build-up, opening dimensions, swing and finish.
What “flush-mounted” means
“Flush” describes a surface relationship; it does not, by itself, tell you how the frame is treated. A plain, flat-faced door may be called a flush door even when it has a conventional visible frame. A concealed-frame or invisible-frame door instead hides or covers the frame so the leaf can align with the finished wall on a chosen side. Josko describes its MET 56 frame as plastered into the wall, leaving the leaf flush with the wall plane (Josko).
Specifications should identify the intended alignment: leaf to wall on one face, leaf to frame, or frame centered within the wall. These arrangements look different, and terminology varies among manufacturers (Rubner).
How the system is configured
Concealed frame and hardware
A typical concealed-frame assembly includes a frame, door leaf and concealed hinges, plus a latch or lock. Some systems offer magnetic locks or recessed handles. For example, VELUMET describes an integrated aluminum frame, concealed hinges and magnetic locks (VELUMET); Josko describes concealed hinges and optional recessed handles (Josko). Confirm hardware compatibility for the selected frame and leaf rather than assuming components can be mixed.

Swing, leaf and finish options
In-swing and out-swing versions are product-specific. TM Doors’ 2024 technical PDF lists a 50 mm leaf for its in-swing configuration and a 45 mm leaf for its out-swing configuration; those dimensions apply to that system, not to concealed-frame doors generally (TM Doors technical PDF).
Depending on manufacturer and model, available configurations may include paint to match the wall, wallpaper or decorative plaster, veneer, glass or mirror. Some ranges also offer flush glass, sliding or pocket variants, or floor-to-ceiling heights. Check whether the leaf is factory finished, primed or intended to receive a site-applied finish (Josko; VELUMET; Angelbau).

What to coordinate before ordering
Concealed-frame doors need early coordination with the wall and finish work. Manufacturer systems differ, so use the selected product’s technical documents and have the installer or specifier confirm final dimensions and installation sequence.
- Wall and opening: Identify the wall construction and finished thickness, rough-opening size and compatible frame profile. Confirm when the frame is installed relative to plastering or drywall finishing.
- Alignment: State which face is intended to be flush and whether the frame is centered in the wall or aligned toward one side.
- Operation and clearance: Select in-swing or out-swing, handing, clear opening and handle approach. Coordinate floor finish and clearances.
- Leaf and finish: Specify dimensions, core, thickness, weight, finish and any glass or other insert. Confirm site-finishing requirements.
- Hardware and adjacent details: Check compatible hinges, latch or lock, handle or recessed pull, seals, trim and any flush baseboard. Concealed hinges are system components; verify they suit the chosen frame, leaf dimensions, weight and swing.
- Performance: If fire, acoustic or security performance is required, specify evidence for the exact assembly and confirm applicable local requirements.
How to compare systems
Compare complete assemblies against the project, not just the appearance of a sample leaf. Ask suppliers to document the relevant differences:

Performance and cost depend on the specified system
A flush appearance does not establish a fire, sound or security rating. Those claims require evidence for the particular tested product configuration and the requirements that apply in the project’s jurisdiction. The product descriptions cited here do not provide a common test basis for comparing systems or a comparable price survey.
