Flower baskets can mean cut flowers arranged in a basket or living plants grown in one. This guide focuses on baskets used to grow and display living plants, especially hanging baskets. They make use of vertical space, but success depends on matching plants to the site, providing drainage and sturdy support, and checking moisture often.
How did growing plants in baskets become a tradition?
Baskets have served practical and decorative purposes in gardens. Smithsonian Gardens’ account of Victorian gardening describes baskets used to carry garden items, display fresh or dried flowers, and cover potted plants. It also notes that Victorian parlors could feature small pendant baskets and hanging baskets of flowers or plants. This documents a place for plant and flower baskets in Victorian decoration; it does not show that Victorians invented the practice.
A separate historical reference points to orchid growing: an RHS Lindley Library research result reports that Sir Joseph Banks used a hanging basket for orchids, citing a description attributed to Ker Gawler in 1817. The basket is described as a light, cylindrical wicker cage open at the top. This is a limited historical reference, not proof of the first plant-growing basket or a complete account of the tradition across regions and eras.
What makes a good hanging basket site and support?
Choose the location before you choose the plants. Observe its light and exposure, including wind, then select plants suited to those conditions. A basket’s contents should also share compatible watering and feeding needs; mixing plants with conflicting requirements makes care harder and can leave some struggling.

Choose a basket and liner that allow excess water to drain. Wire frames may be lined with coir, moss, burlap, or compressed fiber; plastic baskets are another option, but need drainage holes. Larger or deeper baskets generally dry more slowly, though they hold more mix and become heavier. Porous liners tend to dry faster.
Plan for the basket’s weight when saturated and as plants grow. Select a secure hook, chain, rope, wire, or other support that can bear the load. Purdue Extension warns that excess weight on the support can cause a basket to fall. Keep access to the basket practical: regular watering and maintenance are difficult if it is hung where you cannot safely reach it.

Which plants suit a hanging basket?
Let the site and care you can provide guide the plant choices, rather than combining plants on appearance alone. Purdue Extension and Georgia Extension both recommend grouping plants with similar light, water, and nutrition needs. Drought-tolerant choices can reduce watering demands; the RHS lists herbs, salad leaves, tumbling tomatoes, and strawberries alongside seasonal annuals, drought-tolerant perennials, and succulents.
For a basket viewed from all sides, Oregon State University Extension horticulturist Brooke Edmunds describes the optional “thriller, filler, spiller” arrangement: a taller plant at the center, clumping plants to fill the basket, and trailing plants around the edge. Adapt the design to each plant’s mature size and the basket’s actual light and moisture conditions. As Edmunds puts it, “Definitely match plants to conditions or they won’t perform well.”

How do you plant a hanging basket?
- Gather the materials. You will need a basket and suitable liner, plants, a hand trowel, and light, peat-free multipurpose compost or another suitable container mix.
- Prepare drainage. Check that the basket can release excess water. If using plastic to slow moisture loss through a porous liner, Iowa State University Extension advises limiting it to a small area and leaving a route for drainage.
- Arrange plants by height and growth. Place taller plants toward the center and shorter or trailing plants around the edge. Planting through openings in the liner is optional; the RHS notes that it can help a basket look fuller sooner.
- Fill and water. Use a light, well-drained potting mix, not garden soil. Soilless hanging-basket mixes commonly contain ingredients such as peat moss, vermiculite, and perlite. Water slowly and thoroughly before hanging the basket.
- Hang securely. Attach the planted basket to a support appropriate for its wet weight, in the light and exposure that suit its plants.
How often should you water a hanging basket?
Check the mix regularly rather than following a fixed calendar. Baskets can dry quickly, particularly in hot, sunny, or windy conditions. RHS guidance says watering may be needed daily in hot summer weather; Iowa State University Extension says established baskets may need checking daily and can sometimes need water more than once a day on hot, sunny days. These are conditional recommendations, not a universal schedule: basket size, material, plant growth, weather, and exposure all affect drying.
When watering, apply it slowly and thoroughly so the mix is moistened rather than just wetting the surface. If a basket is drying too quickly for the care you can provide, a deeper or less porous container may help retain moisture, but account for its greater wet weight and continue to provide drainage.

How do you feed and maintain basket plants?
Feed according to the plants and the product label. Iowa State University Extension describes water-soluble and slow-release fertilizers as options for regular feeding during the growing season. The RHS says flowering summer annuals can benefit from a couple of high-potassium liquid feeds during the season, while longer-lived plantings can benefit from general-purpose granular fertilizer in spring. These recommendations differ by planting and product; follow the label rather than combining schedules automatically.
Deadhead flowers regularly when the plants benefit from it. Some newer varieties are self-cleaning, so check the needs of the varieties you have chosen. If trailing growth becomes oversized, pruning can refresh the display.

How should you choose among basket options?
| Choice | What to consider |
|---|---|
| Wire frame with a porous liner | Coir, moss, burlap, and compressed-fiber liners are common. Porous materials can dry faster, so expect to check moisture regularly. |
| Plastic basket | Dries more slowly than porous materials, but needs drainage holes. Its moisture retention does not remove the need to check the mix. |
| Deeper or larger basket | Generally dries more slowly, but uses more mix and weighs more when wet; check that the support is secure. |
| Mixed planting | Offers a combination of height, fullness, and trailing growth, but choose plants with compatible light, water, and nutrition needs. |
| Single-style or trailing display | Can simplify the arrangement; select plants for the site and their mature growth, and plan for watering and feeding. |
Oregon State University Extension horticulturist Brooke Edmunds describes a practical benefit of the format: “You’ll have color where you wouldn’t have any otherwise.”
