Flea-control lawn granules are available, but whether a specific product is suitable for your yard depends on its current label. Check that the exact product lists fleas and your intended outdoor site, then follow its application, watering, and re-entry directions. EPA registration records include granular products labeled for fleas on lawns and domestic outdoor sites, but that does not mean every lawn granule controls fleas or that a listed product is currently sold in your area.
How to choose flea granules for a lawn
Use the product label—not a broad “lawn and garden” description or an online category name—to decide whether granules are appropriate. For example, the EPA registration record for BIFENTHRIN LP GRANULAR (EPA Reg. No. 53883-124) lists fleas, including adults and larvae, and ornamental lawns and domestic outdoor sites. Its accepted label is dated June 3, 2024. That record establishes a label example, not current retail availability or permission to use the product everywhere.
Before buying, read the current label for the exact product and confirm each point:
- Target pest and site: Fleas must be listed, and the label must cover the site you plan to treat, such as a residential lawn or ornamental turf.
- Formulation and application: Check that it is a granule and whether the label calls for a particular spreader or other application method.
- Rate and follow-up: Use only the stated application rate and directions about watering or activation, mowing, and repeat treatments. These vary by product.
- People and pets: Find the product’s specific directions for keeping people and animals off treated areas and when they may return.
- Environmental precautions: Read restrictions and hazard statements, including any precautions around water or non-target organisms.
- Coverage and cost: Compare the package’s stated coverage for the labeled use and the price per treated area. Do not assume a rate or coverage from another product.
EPA’s registration and label materials are product-specific. Review the current package label and applicable EPA record for the product you are considering: EPA pesticide registration and the record for BIFENTHRIN LP GRANULAR, EPA Reg. No. 53883-124.

Granules are only one kind of outdoor flea product
Outdoor products come in different formulations, and a product that targets fleas is not necessarily a granule. For example, MGK 30901’s EPA label, dated February 19, 2026, describes a lawn flea-control concentrate applied with a hose-end sprayer, not a granular product. Its label says to keep pets and children out of treated areas until the spray has dried. Those directions apply to that product; they are not instructions for granules.
Keep yard pesticides off pets
Yard treatments are not pet treatments. Never apply lawn granules directly to an animal. If you need flea protection for a pet, choose a product labeled for that animal and follow its species and size directions. EPA advises using pet flea and tick products only on the species and size specified by the label; consult a veterinarian if you need help choosing an approach. Follow the exact label before and after application
Read the full current label before treating the yard. It controls where the product may be used, how to apply it, whether and when to water, and how long people and pets must stay off the area. Do not substitute a rate, watering amount, repeat interval, or waiting period taken from another product.
EPA explains that pesticide products must be used according to their label directions and precautions. It also evaluates potential human-health and ecological effects, including possible effects on non-target organisms. The warnings and restrictions for your yard depend on the exact product, so follow its label rather than assuming all flea granules have the same precautions. Why old labels are not current instructions
An EPA-hosted label for Zema Kennel & Lawn Granules, dated December 1, 1982, described lawn and shrubbery use for fleas and brown dog ticks. It is historical, not current application advice. The label itself says, “Apply this product only as specified on this label.” Its age is a useful reminder to check the current label for the exact product in hand; do not use its ingredient, rate, or directions as guidance for a product sold today. There is not enough verified information here to name a currently available consumer granule as the best choice for every U.S. yard. Retail stock and registration status may vary by location, and an EPA record showing a labeled product does not confirm local availability. Choose only after checking the current package label for the product you can actually buy and confirming that it covers fleas and your intended residential site.
