For marshmallows and s’mores, choose an outdoor wood-burning fire pit with enough room for your group, a stable placement area, and a fuel type allowed where you live. You do not need a cooking grate: a grate matters only if you also want to cook other food over the fire. The USDA Forest Service’s Sequoia National Forest campfire tips explicitly list roasting marshmallows as a reason to have a fire. The guidance also says to attend the fire and to drown and stir it thoroughly before leaving camp. Read the Forest Service campfire tips.
How to compare fire pits for s’mores

Gas pits
Gas fire pits are a separate category, and the CPSC lists a voluntary standard for outdoor decorative gas appliances: ANSI Z21.97-2017/CSA 2.41-2017. That designation alone does not establish that a particular gas pit is intended or suitable for cooking or roasting food. Check the exact model’s manual before roasting marshmallows over it; do not assume all gas fire pits are cooking appliances. CPSC’s LP gas appliances page provides standards context.
A portable cooking-compatible example

Breeo lists four X Series models—X19, X24, X30, and X42—and describes cooking-accessory compatibility for the line. The model numbers identify sizes; they are not evidence of comparative roasting performance. See Breeo’s X Series details. For a compatible grill accessory, Breeo’s Outpost Grill page describes an adjustable grill and notes that fit depends on pit size. Verify the Outpost Grill’s compatibility before buying.
Check placement, clearances, and burn rules
Use the product’s own manual and check local restrictions before lighting a fire. Requirements are model-specific: Breeo’s Y Series user guide says to use the pit outdoors, place it on a level, stable surface, maintain at least 10 feet of overhead clearance, and never leave it unattended. The 10-foot overhead distance is a Breeo Y Series instruction, not a universal clearance for every fire pit. Read the Y Series user guide.

Decking needs particular attention. Solo Stove advises extreme caution around wood or composite decking, recommends checking the surface manufacturer’s guidance, and says to use its stand on composite or PVC decking. These directions concern Solo Stove products; consult the manual for whichever pit you choose rather than applying one brand’s setup to another. See Solo Stove’s help center.
Fire safety for marshmallow roasting
- Keep the fire attended and follow the pit’s instructions for lighting, use, and extinguishing. The Forest Service advises drowning and stirring a campfire thoroughly before leaving.
- Never use gasoline to start or restart a fire. CPSC Chair Alex Hoehn-Saric said in the agency’s August 3, 2023 safety tips: “Never use gasoline to start or to re-start a fire – even if you think the fire was not ignited.” Use only appropriate fire starters before lighting. - CPSC also advises: “Keep a hose or fire extinguisher nearby.” Avoid burning when wildfire risk is high, and obey applicable restrictions.
- Use long-handled roasting forks and keep children and other guests at a safe distance from the flame. Verify the fork’s materials and handle length before use.
Do not buy or use pooled-liquid tabletop fire pits
A tabletop fire pot that requires pouring alcohol or another liquid fuel into an open bowl and igniting the pooled fuel is not a safe substitute for an outdoor wood-burning pit. In a December 19, 2024 alert, the CPSC said this product category violates requirements of voluntary standard ASTM F3363-19 and has been associated with two deaths and at least 60 injuries since 2019. The agency warns of pool fires and flame jetting and urges consumers not to buy or use these products. This warning is about pooled-liquid-burning fire pits, not conventional outdoor wood-burning pits. Read the CPSC consumer alert.

Also check recalls and stop-use notices before using a tabletop model. On July 16, 2026, CPSC warned consumers to stop using Houswise tabletop fire pits immediately; its notice covers at least 53,500 units and names the Vesper, Astra, Altair, and Quad models. Separately, a CPSC recall dated August 13, 2026 covers Brookstone models BSFIREPIT01, BSFIREPIT02, and BSFIREPIT03 and provides a stop-use and refund remedy. Do not use these named products.
