The Flashforge AD5X is a budget-oriented multicolor FFF printer that makes four-color printing unusually accessible, but it is not a universal engineering-material machine. Its integrated four-channel IFS, automatic leveling, 220 × 220 × 220 mm build volume, and fast CoreXY-style motion make it attractive for models, prototypes, workshop aids, and construction presentation pieces. The main trade-offs are sequential single-nozzle color changes, purge waste, an open-frame base design, and optional camera and enclosure accessories.

The Flashforge AD5X is a good entry-level multicolor FFF printer if your priority is convenient four-color printing rather than an enclosed chamber, minimal purge waste, or advanced engineering-material work. It combines a 220 × 220 × 220 mm build volume, CoreXY-style motion, automatic leveling, power-loss recovery, filament detection, Wi-Fi/Ethernet connectivity, and a built-in four-channel Intelligent Filament System (IFS). Flashforge’s U.S. product page showed a direct price of $399 during research, although promotions, bundles, sellers, and regional prices can change.

For construction professionals, makers, and small workshops, the AD5X is most useful for scale models, site-layout aids, brackets, organizers, jigs, signage, architectural details, and presentation prototypes. It is less suitable when you need a large-format machine, a factory-sealed or actively heated chamber, simultaneous multinozzle color printing, or predictable production with very little material waste.

Motion system CoreXY Designed for rapid X/Y movement and stable motion.
Maximum print speed 300 mm/s A manufacturer maximum, not a universal speed for every material or model.
Maximum travel speed 600 mm/s Applies to non-printing movement and should not be confused with extrusion speed.
Maximum acceleration 20,000 mm/s2 Supports fast motion, but aggressive settings can increase vibration and noise.
Color system Four-channel IFS, one extruder and one nozzle Colors are printed sequentially through one hotend, not simultaneously through four nozzles.
Standard nozzle 0.4 mm A practical general-purpose diameter; 0.25, 0.6, and 0.8 mm assemblies are also listed as options.
Layer height 0.1–0.4 mm Fine layers improve detail but take longer; thick layers favor speed.
Heated bed Up to 110°C Improves adhesion and expands material flexibility compared with an unheated bed.
Build surface Removable flexible PEI steel sheet Allows the finished print to be removed by flexing the plate.
Connectivity Wi-Fi, Ethernet, USB, and software/mobile features Supports both networked and local file-transfer workflows.
Screen and storage 4.3-inch touchscreen and 8 GB built-in storage Printer setup and controls are handled locally, with space for stored files.

What makes the AD5X different?

The central feature is the integrated IFS module. It accepts up to four filament channels, automatically loads and unloads filament, switches between selected colors, and supports refill functionality. Unlike systems that require a separate feeder box beside the printer, the AD5X incorporates the multicolor hardware into its compact setup.

  • 【Wide Applications】Given the outstanding performances, ELEGOO standard resin is suitable for most DLP/LCD 3D printers. Works best with the LCD 3D Printers.
  • 【Safe and Secure Packaging】Leak-proof bottle fully wrapped with a plastic bubble bag and exquisite designed package box make sure the resin stays in place where they belong

That convenience comes with an important technical limitation: the printer has one extruder and one nozzle. A multicolor print is therefore produced by changing filament through the shared hotend. Each change requires the old material to be pushed out, the new filament to be loaded, and the transition material to be purged. The result is longer print time and potentially substantial purge waste.

Waste varies with the model, the number and order of color changes, purge settings, and the slicer profile. A small decorative object with frequent color transitions can use much more material than its finished weight suggests. The IFS is consequently most attractive for signs, figurines, toys, educational models, cosplay details, and other prints where color convenience matters more than material efficiency.

For ordinary single-color work, the AD5X does not need to be used as a multicolor printer. Flashforge documents a workflow for printing without the IFS, so the machine can also handle conventional PLA, PETG, and other supported materials without changing color throughout the job.

Setup and everyday operation

Flashforge’s setup flow is aimed at reducing the most intimidating parts of 3D printing. The initial sequence includes choosing a language, connecting to Wi-Fi, optionally binding the printer to Flash Maker, running calibration, loading filament, and starting a first print.

The package includes the IFS module, four spool holders, a four-in-one guide tube, mounting hardware, tools, lubricant, glue, sample filament, a power cord, and setup documentation. The exact contents can vary by region or bundle, so buyers should check the listing for their market.

Automatic leveling

The printer uses pressure sensing to measure the relationship between the nozzle and build platform and apply compensation. This is a meaningful beginner-friendly feature because a poorly adjusted first layer is one of the most common causes of failed prints.

ELEGOO Upgraded 8K Standard 3D Printer Resin Space Grey 1000g
  • 【Low Shrinkage and High Precision】ELEGOO photopolymer resin is specially designed for reducing volume shrinkage during the Photocuring process, which ensures the high precision of the print model with smooth finish.
  • 【Low Volume Shrinkage】Low shrinkage and good stability reduce volume shrinkage during the curing process. Therefore, after cleaning and post-curing, the molded prints will not be noticeably deformed or cracked over a long period of time.
  • 【Low Viscosity & Good Fluidity】With excellent fluidity, the resin can quickly reflow to the area between model and release film, which improves the printing success rate, and reduces printing time.
  • 【Safe and Low Odor】ELEGOO standard photopolymer resin is specially formulated with less odor and a very pure and bright color. There is less pungent smell during printing, thus maintaining a freshening printing environment.
  • 【Bright and Stunning Colors】With high quality pigments and photo-initiators inside ELEGOO UV-Curing resin, the models printed with resin have a very pure and stunning color effect just like an artwork.

Automatic leveling is not maintenance-free leveling. The PEI surface still needs to be clean, the nozzle must be free of buildup, and the printer should sit on a stable, reasonably level surface. Finger oils, residue, a damaged sheet, or a partially blocked nozzle can still cause adhesion and first-layer problems.

Changing filament

Filament changes are controlled through the touchscreen and IFS. However, the system is not indifferent to material transitions. Flashforge warns that switching from a high-temperature material such as ABS to PLA requires a cleaning action. PETG can also be sticky enough to require cleaning during a change.

A practical workflow is to group jobs by material where possible, keep filament dry, and perform a cleaning or purge procedure when changing between materials with substantially different behavior. That reduces the chance of contamination, partial clogs, or a failed first layer on the next print.

Materials: what it can print and where caution is needed

Flashforge lists PLA, PETG, TPU95A, TPU64D–75D, PLA-CF, and PETG-CF among the supported materials, with some distinctions between single-color and multicolor operation. “Supported” should not be interpreted as “equally easy in every room, profile, or spool.” Material choice affects drying, adhesion, cooling, nozzle wear, ventilation, and enclosure requirements.

  • PLA: The most straightforward choice for models, prototypes, organizers, fixtures, and general-purpose parts. It is usually the sensible starting material.
  • PETG: Useful when greater toughness or heat resistance than typical PLA is wanted, but it can be stringier and stickier. It may require more careful surface preparation and cleaning during filament changes.
  • TPU: Flexible filament requires appropriate profiles and moisture control. Flashforge’s guidance recommends drying TPU and controlling drying-box humidity below 15%.
  • PLA-CF and PETG-CF: Fiber-filled materials can improve stiffness or appearance, but they are abrasive and place greater demands on the nozzle. Use the appropriate material profile and plan for nozzle maintenance.

If you are buying consumables, choose high-speed PLA filament or a clearly identified PLA/PETG product only after checking the spool dimensions, material profile, color-changing requirements, and the seller’s compatibility information. A generic “high-speed” label does not guarantee ideal results at 300 mm/s, and not every filament is appropriate for every IFS channel or multicolor workflow.

Open-frame design and enclosure limitations

The standard AD5X is an open-frame printer. That is convenient for access and can be perfectly reasonable for PLA and PETG in a suitable, ventilated workspace, but it provides less environmental control than a factory-enclosed printer.

Flashforge offers an optional AD5X enclosure kit, which is intended to improve safety, odor control, temperature stability, and noise. The base printer does not include it, and some enclosure components may require self-printing for full customization.

  • ⑤【High Cost-Effectiveness】- Standard resin provides good performance and durability at a relatively low cost, making it an affordable choice for those with a limited budget.

An enclosure can make the printer more comfortable to use and help reduce drafts, but it should not automatically be treated as an actively heated engineering-material chamber. Anyone considering ABS, ASA, or other temperature-sensitive materials should check the current material guidance, ventilation needs, enclosure design, and thermal requirements rather than assuming the optional enclosure makes every engineering filament appropriate.

Print quality and speed in the real world

The headline figures—300 mm/s print speed, 600 mm/s travel speed, and 20,000 mm/s2 acceleration—describe the printer’s claimed motion ceiling. They do not mean that every part will produce its best surface finish at those settings.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Useful speed depends on layer height, nozzle size, extrusion rate, geometry, overhangs, cooling, infill, material, acceleration, and the number of color changes. A simple single-color part with broad walls may print quickly. A detailed multicolor model with frequent transitions can remain slow despite the printer’s fast motion system because loading and purging filament becomes the bottleneck.

Third-party hands-on reporting generally describes the AD5X as easy to set up and capable of good-looking prints for its price. Reported drawbacks include purge waste, longer multicolor jobs, open-frame construction, a learning curve in the software, exposed spools, and the absence of a standard camera. Those observations are useful practical evidence, but they are not controlled laboratory benchmarks and should not be treated as guarantees for every user.

The sensible expectation is therefore “fast when the model and profile allow it,” not “flawless high-speed printing with no tuning.” Beginners still need to understand slicer profiles, first-layer adhesion, filament storage, nozzle cleaning, and the trade-off between detail and production time.

Is the AD5X useful for construction and workshop work?

  • Small jigs, drilling guides, spacers, and templates
  • Tool organizers and workshop fixtures
  • Prototype housings, brackets, and covers
  • Signage, labels, and presentation components

For functional construction parts, remember that printed strength depends on orientation, layer adhesion, wall count, infill, material, temperature, and loading direction. A printed prototype or temporary jig is not automatically suitable as a structural, safety-critical, load-bearing, electrical, or code-regulated component. Validate dimensions and performance before putting a printed part into service.

What is included—and what may cost extra?

The supplied equipment is enough to begin printing, including sample filament and basic tools. Likely ownership purchases include:

  • More filament: Four sample spools are useful for testing but will not support sustained four-color use.
  • A replacement nozzle assembly: Flashforge lists 0.25, 0.4, 0.6, and 0.8 mm assemblies. A spare is particularly sensible for frequent printing or abrasive fiber-filled materials. Verify the exact AD5X hardware revision before ordering an AD5X replacement nozzle.
  • A filament dryer or dry box: Especially relevant for TPU and other moisture-sensitive materials. Dry storage can prevent brittle filament, inconsistent extrusion, stringing, and failed prints.
  • The enclosure: Optional, not part of the base printer.
  • A camera: Not included by default, despite the printer’s network and remote-management features.

Flashforge’s research-time listing showed a selected replacement nozzle variant at $29 and the enclosure kit at $49. These are observed prices, not permanent prices; confirm current availability and compatibility before buying.

At approximately $400, the AD5X makes the strongest value argument for buyers who specifically want automatic four-color printing. If you mainly print monochrome PLA or PETG, a cheaper single-color printer may offer better value and less operational complexity. If you need a controlled chamber, large build volume, simultaneous multinozzle printing, or minimal purge waste, the AD5X may require too many compromises or additional purchases.

For a buyer ready to compare current availability, the Flashforge AD5X 3D printer is the relevant model to check—but confirm the seller, bundle contents, warranty terms, shipping region, and current price before ordering.

Verdict

The Flashforge AD5X is best understood as an affordable gateway to automated four-color FFF printing. Its strongest points are the integrated IFS, automatic leveling, fast CoreXY-style motion, useful desktop-sized build volume, network connectivity, and approachable setup. Its defining compromises are equally clear: one nozzle means sequential color changes, purge waste and longer multicolor prints; the base machine is open-frame; the camera and enclosure are optional; and advanced materials require more careful handling.

At the researched $399 U.S. direct price, it is a credible recommendation for beginners, hobbyists, educators, and small construction or workshop teams whose main goal is convenient multicolor modeling and prototyping. It is a less convincing choice for engineering-material work, large parts, maximum material efficiency, or production environments where every color change and gram of filament matters.
